DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says farmers are expected to harvest the largest soybean crop on record but must deal with a constricted market in which to sell the crop because of President Donald Trump’s tariff battle with China. In its latest update released Thursday, the USDA places the expected soybean harvest at 4.6 billion bushels, the largest ever.Illinois leads soybean production with 688 million bushels and Iowa is second.Selling soybeans to China has nearly halted with the tariff dispute resulting in a growing stockpile and the lowest prices for farmers in more than a decade.Corn production is estimated at 14.6 billion bushels, the second largest crop on record.Iowa remains the nation’s leading corn producer with an expected 2.5 billion bushels.

— North Dakota’s soybean, corn, sugar beet and potato crops are expected to be similar in size to last year’s crops. The Agriculture Department’s latest production report estimates the state’s soybean crop up 1 percent to 247 million bushels. The corn crop is forecast at 426 million bushels, down 5 percent.Nationally, farmers are expected to produce a record soybean crop and the second-largest corn crop ever.North Dakota’s potato production is forecast to be down 3 percent to 23.7 million hundredweight and the sugar beet crop down 6 percent to just under 6.1 million tons.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A super weed that can devastate corn and soybean crops has now been found in five North Dakota counties, but a university expert says there is still hope for preventing a widespread infestation of Palmer amaranth in the state.

The aggressive pigweed species can grow as tall as 7 feet and produce hundreds of thousands of seeds. It’s strong enough to stop combines and resist many herbicides.

It’s native to the desert regions of the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico, but it has slowly spread to southeastern and Midwestern states and in recent years has moved into South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.

It was first confirmed in soybeans in southeastern North Dakota’s McIntosh County in August, and it now has been confirmed either by extension specialists or through laboratory analysis in Benson, Dickey, Foster and Richland counties, in soybeans, livestock feed and in the wild.

The infestations have been small, with officials in most cases pulling the plants by hand, according to Tom Peters, sugar beet agronomist with the North Dakota State University Extension Service.

In sports…

ISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota licensed deer hunters are readying for the opening of the state’s deer gun season on Friday.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that North Dakota allocated 55,150 deer gun licenses for the roughly 16-day-long season.

Jeb Williams is chief of the state Game and Fish Department’s Wildlife Division. Williams says the department modestly increased licenses but was conservative enough that hunters will likely have a successful season.

He says anecdotal data and field reports suggest deer reproduction was good this year around the Bismarck-Mandan area. He notes that hunting units near Fargo, Bismarck, Minot, Grand Forks, Dickinson and Williston also tend to be popular.

Williams says western North Dakota has seen positive growth and harvests of white-tailed and mule deer, while the east has experienced more challenges.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — One of the safest cities in America is struggling to cope with the trauma of a mass shooting while authorities are trying to figure out what sent a Marine veteran on a bloody rampage in Southern California.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night at a vigil to remember the dozen people shot down by 28-year-old Ian Long one night earlier at the packed Borderline Bar & Grill. Long apparently took his own life as police converged on the Thousand Oaks nightspot.

Terrified patrons hurled barstools through windows to escape or threw their bodies protectively on top of friends as shots erupted.

Ventura County sheriff’s Sgt. Ron Helus was shot as he entered the bar.

The dead also included a man who had survived last year’s massacre in Las Vegas.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Neighbors of Ian David Long have described the man who shot and killed 12 people at a country music bar as distant in public but combative with his mother inside the suburban Los Angeles home the two shared.

One ruckus in April was so extreme that they called law enforcement. Authorities brought in a mental health specialist who concluded that Long could not be involuntarily committed for psychiatric observation but worried the 28-year-old Marine veteran might have post-traumatic stress disorder.

Next-door neighbor Julie Hanson described him as “odd” and “disrespectful” well before he left home a decade ago, got married and enlisted in the Marines.

She could often hear him yelling and cursing, but several months ago unusually loud banging and shouting prompted her husband to call authorities.

Tom Hanson says he’s “dumbfounded” by the massacre.

PARADISE, Calif. (AP) — A fast-moving wildfire that ravaged a Northern California town Thursday sent residents racing to escape on roads that turned into tunnels of fire as thick smoke darkened the daytime sky.

A Cal Fire official said thousands of structures were destroyed.

Harrowing tales of escape and heroic rescues emerged from Paradise, where the entire community of 27,000 was ordered to evacuate. Witnesses reported seeing homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement home up in flames.

The fire was reported shortly after daybreak in a rural area. By nightfall, it had consumed more than 28 square miles and was raging out of control.

Authorities say at least two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

SYDNEY (AP) — The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack in Australia that police say was linked to terrorism.

Police say the driver of a pickup truck got out of his vehicle, which then caught fire, and attacked three bystanders with a knife before being fatally shot by police on Friday in Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city.

Police said the attacker came from Somalia.

The militant group said in a statement released through its Aamaq media arm that the man was “one of Islamic State fighters” and carried out the attack in response to IS calls for attacks in countries that are part of the international coalition fighting the militants in Syria and Iraq.

IS, which has suffered heavy battlefield setbacks in Syria and Iraq in the past year, often claims attacks in an opportunistic vein.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Razor-thin margins in Florida’s bitter races for the U.S. Senate and governor are raising the possibility of recounts, potentially prolonging two of the most closely watched contests of the nation’s midterm elections.

In the governor’s race, Democrat Andrew Gillum’s campaign said Thursday it’s readying for a possible recount. He conceded to Republican Ron DeSantis on Tuesday night, though the race has since tightened. DeSantis led Gillum by 0.47 percentage point as of Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson has begun preparing for a potential recount in a race that is still too close to call against Republican Gov. Rick Scott. Scott held a 0.21 percentage lead over Nelson on Thursday afternoon.

The tight races underscored Florida’s status as a perennial swing state where elections are often decided by the thinnest of margins.

In 2000, Florida decided the presidency by a few hundred votes in a contest that took more than five weeks to sort out.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) — Barely a year after surviving a massacre at a country music festival in Las Vegas, Brendan Kelly found himself in a terrifyingly familiar scene.

Kelly says he was dancing with friends at a bar in suburban Los Angeles on Wednesday night when bullets began flying.

Twelve people were killed, including a Navy veteran who had lived through the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history a year ago.

Kelly said Thursday that he heard “pop, pop” and instantly knew it was gunfire at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks.

The 22-year-old Marine says he dragged a woman out an emergency exit and applied a tourniquet to his friend’s bleeding arm.

In Vegas, where 58 people died, Kelly said he threw a friend to the ground before helping her escape.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama blasts President Donald Trump in her new book, recalling how she reacted in shock the night she learned he would replace her husband in the Oval Office and tried to “block it all out.”

In her memoir “Becoming,” set to come out Tuesday, Michelle Obama denounces the president for bragging in 2005 about sexually assaulting women. She says his comments on the infamous “Hollywood Access” tape meant, “I can hurt you and get away with it.”

She also accuses Trump of using body language to “stalk” his 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton, during an election debate. She says Trump followed Clinton around the stage, stood too close and tried to diminish her presence.
