(VCSU) – The Vikings and Jimmies delivered another men’s basketball classic Wednesday night.

Playing their first contest since Jamestown moved to the Great Plains Athletic Conference, the former conference rivals went back and forth at The Bubble in a game that featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes. The Jimmies had the last big run, scoring six straight points in the final minutes to create some separation en route to an 83-75 victory.

Valley City State drops to 1-5 overall this season. Jamestown improves to 6-1.

Jamestown – which entered the night making 14 3-pointers per game – made just one 3-pointer all night, but it was a big one. Isaiah Dobson knocked down a 3 from the left corner with 4:26 left in the game, giving Jamestown a 68-63 lead. The Jimmies were 0-for-9 from deep before Dobson’s make.

Valley City State’s Logan Nelson answered right back with a 3-pointer on the other end, making it a two-point game again. The Vikings had two possessions to tie the game, but could not get over the hump. The Jimmies would respond by scoring the next six points to take a 74-66 lead with 1:30 to go, and then went 9-for-10 at the free throw line to ice the victory.

After trailing by three at halftime, and by as many as eight early in the second half, the Vikings fought back to take a four-point lead at 54-50 with 11:45 remaining. Alex Weston‘s 3-pointer capped a 9-2 run to give the Vikings that advantage. Jamestown responded by outscoring VCSU 11-3 over the next four minutes to take a 61-57 lead they would not relinquish.

Vikings Connor Entzi and Christian Kvilvang, who both transferred to VCSU this year from the University of Jamestown, combined to score 38 points as they took the floor with a bit of extra motivation. Entzi led the Vikings with 24 points on 9-for-11 shooting. Logan Nelson poured in 20 points for VCSU, and was 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Kvilvang finished with 14 points and four rebounds, and Chris Morgan added 10 points for VCSU.

The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field (31-62), 32 percent from 3-point range (8-25) and were 5-for-9 on free throws. The Jimmies entered the game shooting 48 percent on 3’s, but made just one 3-pointer in the game. They made up ground at the free throw line where they went 24-for-27. Jamestown shot 48 percent from the field (29-61) and 9 percent from deep (1-11).

Jimmie guard Jon Purintun poured in a game-high 32 points on 12-for-23 shooting. Kevin Oberweiser added 19 points.

Jamestown held a 35-24 rebounding advantage. VCSU finished with nine turnovers, eight assists, four blocks and three steals. Jamestown turned it over six times and had seven assists, no blocks and two steals.
