Melvin (Mel) Kachel, 91 Jamestown, ND passed away at Ave Maria Village on November 30, 2018.

Melvin James Kachel was born on September 22, 1927 at Fargo, ND, the son of Frank and Mary (Stampka) Kachel. He was raised in the Fried and Jamestown areas. He attended St. John’s Academy in Jamestown and High School in Portland, OR. Mel joined the Merchant Marines in 1945 and was honorably discharged. He attended North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, ND, and Jamestown College. Mel married Alice Hanson at Fried, ND on March 4, 1953. He worked for W. H. Noel and Company, Northern Improvement, owned Mel’s Conoco, and managed the Blue Blazer Lounge in the Gladstone Hotel before joining the Jamestown Fire Department. He became Assistant Fire Chief in 1971 and Fire Chief in 1972, retiring in 1991.

Survivors include three sons; Murry, Del Rio, TX; Daniel, Jamestown, ND; and Timothy (Carol), Jamestown, ND; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Alice, and son David.

Mel was a member of St. James Basilica and was a life member of the Elks, Eagles, American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.

Memorials in Mel’s honor can be made to Elks Camp Grassick or Ave Maria Village.

 

Rosary: 7:00 PM, Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Williams Funeral Chapel with Vigil to follow.

Mass of Christian Burial: 2:30 PM, Friday, December 7, 2018  at St. James Basilica, Jamestown, ND with a reception following.

Interment: Sacred Heart Cemetery, Fried, ND at a later date.
