BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota residents will have to have identification when they show up to the polls.

North Dakota’s Senate approved the measure 30-16 Wednesday. The House approved the measure in February.

North Dakota is the only state in the nation that does not have voter registration, which has prompted proposals to toughen its voter identification requirements.

Residents who didn’t bring any identification to the polls could vote anyway if they signed a sworn statement attesting that they are eligible to vote in the precinct.
