BISMARCK – The Bismarck Squadron Civil Air Patrol will facilitate this year’s
Wreaths Across America event at the ND Veterans Cemetery on December 15th starting at 11am, with the help of the community. The event will occur simultaneously with over 1,500 other ceremonies at locations in the United States and beyond, and will be highlighted by the placement of military service ceremonial wreaths by veterans of each respective service. The ceremonial wreath presenters were nominated by the community, and selected via a random drawing. The event will culminate with adorning
gravesites with a holiday wreath. Over 6,700 wreaths were sponsored for this year’s event.

Veterans selected to place wreaths on behalf of their service and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action servicemembers are:

*   Army – Former Specialist 4 Dick Dever of Bismarck
*   Navy – Former Petty Officer 2nd Class Russ Lindblom of Bismarck
*   Marine Corps – Former Corporal David Patch of Bismarck
*   Air Force – Former Staff Sergeant Terrance Moericke of Mandan
*   Coast Guard – Former Yeoman 2nd Class Kathleen Donahue of Mandan, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS)
*   POW/MIA – Current US Army Reserve Master Sergeant  Robert Holtz of Fargo

A wreath will also be placed by a CAP cadet on behalf of Merchant Marine veterans.

The event will start at 11 AM on Saturday, December 15, 2018, but everyone is encouraged to get there early if possible because parking can take some time.
Attendants will be present to guide participants to parking spaces. Bismarck CAP anticipates they will be able to fit everybody inside the cemetery, so parking on Highway 1806 should be avoided unless an attendant directs otherwise. Overflow parking will also be available at Ft. Lincoln like in previous years.

Once a ceremony is over, all participants will be given instructions on how the wreath placement part of the event will occur. The current weather forecast calls for reasonable winter weather, but attendees are encouraged to check conditions before leaving home and dress accordingly. The Chapel building at the Veterans Cemetery will be open, but is set aside for those participants who may be especially sensitive to being outside in the cold.

While 6,700 wreaths were sponsored for gravesites at the ND Vets Cemetery, due to the surging popularity of the WAA program the nationwide transportation network was overwhelmed. Delivery of around 400 wreaths will thus be delayed to the NDVC, located south of Mandan on ND 1806. Bismarck CAP expects delivery of the remaining wreaths next week, and fully anticipates all gravesites will be covered before
Christmas. Shipping is donated by truck companies across the US, with Britton Trucking of Grand Forks making final delivery to North Dakota locations.

The WAA program at the ND Vets Cemetery was one of the original 150 sites to participate in this annual event.

Those interested in finding out more on the Wreaths Across America program, Civil Air Patrol, and wreath sponsorship for future ceremonies can contact Bismarck CAP at

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A popular upscale restaurant in North Dakota’s capital city is being sued for allegedly firing a server after she became pregnant.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the federal lawsuit against East 40 Inc. on Monday. The company does business in Bismarck as 40 Steak & Seafood.

Server Erica Davidson was hired at the restaurant in February 2015 and learned she was pregnant two months later. She told her managers and co-workers that June and was fired the next month, EEOC attorneys allege in court documents. A manager allegedly told other workers that Davidson’s pregnancy was the reason.

“Pregnancy discrimination is a continuing problem in the United States,” Greg Gochanour, regional attorney for the EEOC’s district office in Chicago, said in a statement. “The rule is simple: don’t fire someone, or treat someone adversely in any way, simply because she is pregnant. It is against the law and it is just wrong.”

Restaurant owner Dale Zimmerman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday from The Associated Press. A restaurant lawyer listed in court documents said he was not representing the business in the dispute.

In world and national news..

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump’s once-devoted lawyer and all-around fixer, was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison after telling a federal judge that his “blind loyalty” to his boss led him to cover up Trump’s “dirty deeds.”

Standing alone at the defense table, Cohen, 52, shook his head slightly and closed his eyes as the judge pronounced the sentence for crimes that included lying about his boss’ business dealings in Russia and funneling hush money to two women who said they had sex with Trump — payments that both Cohen and federal prosecutors said were made at Trump’s direction to fend off damage to his White House bid.

Cohen is the first and, so far, only member of Trump’s circle during two years of investigations to go into open court and implicate the president in a crime, though whether a president can be prosecuted under the Constitution is an open question.

Separately, prosecutors announced Wednesday that they filled in another piece of the puzzle in the hush-money case: The parent company of the National Enquirer acknowledged making one of those payments “in concert” with the Trump campaign to protect him from a story that could have hurt his candidacy.

During an appearance at the White House shortly after the sentencing, Trump ignored reporters’ questions about Cohen.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Doug Jones said Alabama’s soybean farmers and automobile manufacturers are “scared to death” over President Donald Trump’s tariff wars, but he cautioned Democrats from spending too much time attacking the president as the party tries to win back heartland voters ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

In an Associated Press interview, the Democrat who won a stunning victory from the Deep South a year ago Wednesday said he doesn’t think there’s enough evidence to impeach the president, even as prosecutors allege Trump directed his lawyer to make illegal hush money payments. Democrats’ time would be better spent conducting oversight of the administration, he said, and working with the president to improve trade policies, the Affordable Care Act and other issues.

“I don’t think you have to just jump into that right now because it can not only politically backfire,” he said about impeachment. “There would be backlash. Our country is divided enough as it is. Democrats right now have an opportunity to try to get some things done.”

Thanks to Republican victories in midterm elections last month, Jones will soon be one of the few remaining Democratic senators from a deeply conservative state. That status has made him something of a guide for his party on how to win back Democrats who voted for Trump 2016.

As longtime friend of Joe Biden, Jones said he hopes the former vice president makes a run as the party’s pick for 2020.

STRASBOURG, France (AP) —  French authorities have issued a wanted poster and are calling for witnesses amid a massive manhunt for the suspected shooter nearly 24 hours after a deadly attack at the Strasbourg Christmas market.

A photo of Cherif Chekatt, 29, who was born in Strasbourg, was distributed publicly Wednesday evening.

The poster warns: “Dangerous individual, above all do not intervene.” It asks anyone with information that could help locate him to contact authorities.

Chekatt has been on the run since allegedly spraying gunfire at the city’s famous Christmas market on Tuesday night, killing two and leaving one person brain-dead. A dozen others were injured.

Hundreds of police and soldiers were combing Strasbourg in a search of him, blocking bridges that cross the border into Germany. Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced a strengthening of security forces to secure Christmas markets.

NEW YORK (AP) — “A Star Is Born” led nominations for the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards with four nods including best ensemble on Wednesday, firmly establishing Bradley Cooper’s romantic revival as this year’s Academy Awards front runner.

In nominations announced in West Hollywood, Calif., the actors guild — one of the most predictive bellwethers of the Oscars — threw cold water on the awards campaigns of numerous contenders while elevating others. But “A Star Is Born” fared the best of all, landing nominations for Cooper (best male actor), Lady Gaga (best female actor) and Sam Elliott (best supporting male actor).

The other nominees for the group’s top award, best ensemble, were: “Black Panther,” ”Bohemian Rhapsody,” ”BlacKkKlansman” and “Crazy Rich Asians.”

That category is the most closely watched because only once in the last two decades has the eventual Oscars best picture winner not been nominated for best ensemble at the SAG Awards. The one aberration, though, was last year, when Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” overcame the SAG omission on its way to winning best picture.

Unless a new trend is forming, that’s worrisome news for Oscar hopefuls like “Vice,” Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic (which led last week’s Golden Globe nominations); Alfonso Cuaron’s Netflix drama “Roma” (the overwhelming choice of critics groups); and the 1962 road trip “Green Book.”
