UPDATE

BISMARCK – The Bismarck Squadron Civil Air Patrol will facilitate this year’s
Wreaths Across America event at the ND Veterans Cemetery on December 15th starting at 11am, with the help of the community. The event will occur simultaneously with over 1,500 other ceremonies at locations in the United States and beyond, and will be highlighted by the placement of military service ceremonial wreaths by veterans of each respective service. The ceremonial wreath presenters were nominated by the community, and selected via a random drawing. The event will culminate with adorning
gravesites with a holiday wreath. Over 6,700 wreaths were sponsored for this year’s event.

Veterans selected to place wreaths on behalf of their service and Prisoner of War/Missing in Action servicemembers are:

* Army – Former Specialist 4 Dick Dever of Bismarck
* Navy – Former Petty Officer 2nd Class Russ Lindblom of Bismarck
* Marine Corps – Former Corporal David Patch of Bismarck
* Air Force – Former Staff Sergeant Terrance Moericke of Mandan
* Coast Guard – Former Yeoman 2nd Class Kathleen Donahue of Mandan, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS)
* POW/MIA – Current US Army Reserve Master Sergeant Robert Holtz of Fargo

A wreath will also be placed by a CAP cadet on behalf of Merchant Marine veterans.

The event will start at 11 AM on Saturday, December 15, 2018, but everyone is encouraged to get there early if possible because parking can take some time.
Attendants will be present to guide participants to parking spaces. Bismarck CAP anticipates they will be able to fit everybody inside the cemetery, so parking on Highway 1806 should be avoided unless an attendant directs otherwise. Overflow parking will also be available at Ft. Lincoln like in previous years.

Once a ceremony is over, all participants will be given instructions on how the wreath placement part of the event will occur. The current weather forecast calls for reasonable winter weather, but attendees are encouraged to check conditions before leaving home and dress accordingly. The Chapel building at the Veterans Cemetery will be open, but is set aside for those participants who may be especially sensitive to being outside in the cold.

FORT YATES, N.D. (AP) — The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is getting $291,000 from the federal government to expand and improve the All Nations Veterans Cemetery in Fort Yates. The money is through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The agency last year gave the tribe nearly $5 million to build the cemetery. The 8-acre cemetery is expected to serve more than 2,200 tribal veterans and their families.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum wants to exempt military pay and pensions from North Dakota income taxes, arguing in part that retaining veterans could help the state fill thousands of open jobs.Legislators have ignored similar pleas in the past, but supporters say the economic benefits of keeping veterans in the state would more than make up for lost revenue.North Dakota has more than 13,000 unfilled advertised jobs, though Burgum believes the number of all open jobs is at least twice that.Military members generally may retire after 20 years, leaving many of them in their late 30s or early 40s in search of a new career.
BOTTINEAU, N.D. (AP) — Voters in the Bottineau school district have overwhelmingly approved a $7.6 million school upgrade.Nearly 1,000 people voted Wednesday, and unofficial results show 85 percent of them favored a bond issue to fund the project. Sixty percent approval was required.Superintendent Pat Renden says the district will build a new preschool through second grade addition onto its existing elementary and high school. Officials hope to break ground in the spring and have the project complete by the fall of 2020.The district covers Bottineau County as well as parts of Rolette, Pierce, and McHenry Counties. Brenden says the owner of a $200,000 home will pay about $59 more per year in taxes to pay off the bond.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Opponents of Enbridge Energy’s proposed Line 3 crude oil pipeline replacement may turn their attention to fighting the project on other fronts as a Minnesota regulatory panel prepares to take one of its final steps to allow it to proceed.

The Public Utilities Commission on Thursday was scheduled to discuss petitions by environmental and tribal groups for the panel to reconsider its decision in June to approve a route permit for the line across northern Minnesota. Those opponents acknowledge that they hold out little hope, given that the commission earlier this month quickly and unanimously rejected their petitions to reconsider the project’s certificate of need.

That vote triggered a walkout and a march to the office of Gov.-elect Tim Walz, a Democrat. Both sides since then have been mobilizing their supporters to attend Thursday’s PUC meeting. The Jobs for Minnesotans business-labor-community coalition expects that a large contingent of blue-hatted Line 3 supporters will arrive early, spokesman Mike Zipko said.

VALLEY CITY  (VCSU)   – The Valley City State and University of Jamestown women’s basketball teams delivered another classic rivalry game Wednesday night, battling to a two-point contest in Valley City.

Jamestown’s Noelle Josephson scored inside to break a 52-52 tie with 50 seconds remaining, and the Jimmies held on in the final seconds for a 56-54 win.

After Josephson’s bucket, the Vikings had chances to answer back, but a turnover with 31 seconds to go led to a Jimmie free throw. Valley City State’s Mackenzie Huber was fouled inside and made both free throws with 17 seconds left, bringing VCSU to within 55-54. Emma Stoehr went just 1-for-2 on the other end for Jamestown, but Valley City State was unable to convert in the final seconds. Dierra Diegel‘s 3-pointer from the left corner was off the mark, and Huber was stripped as she went up for a putback with time expiring.

Valley City State drops to 4-6 overall this season, while the University of Jamestown improves to 7-7. The Vikings and Jimmies split their season series, with the Vikings winning 67-55 back on Nov. 5 in Jamestown.

Jamestown scored the first seven points of the game and led 17-9 after the first quarter. The Jimmies built their largest lead of the game, 24-12, early in the second quarter. Valley City State lost starting point guard Kate Williams to an injury with 5:06 left in the second quarter. The Vikings trailed 28-19 at the time but rallied around the loss of their floor general, ending the half with a 10-5 run and cutting the halftime deficit to 33-29.

Valley City State could not take the lead in the third, but cut the deficit to one point on Annie Swenson‘s putback late in the quarter, making it 45-44 entering the fourth. On the opening possession of the fourth quarter, the Vikings took their first and only lead of the game after Huber’s 14-foot jumper made it 46-45. The teams were then tied at 48-48 before Jamestown took a 52-48 lead with 7:16 remaining. The Viking defense held Jamestown scoreless over the next six minutes and baskets by VCSU’s Hannah Schlecht and Alli Vandal tied the game at 52-52 with 1:54 to go.

Neither team took great care of the ball as they combined to commit 40 turnovers, including 21 by VCSU and 19 by the Jimmies.

Viking junior Mackenzie Huber led all scorers with 19 points. She added six rebounds and two blocks for VCSU, and went 7-for-8 at the free throw line. Emily Schafer scored six points off the bench for VCSU, all coming at the free throw line. Vandal, Williams, Swenson and Gabby Martin all scored five points each. Diegel and Schlecht each had eight rebounds for the Vikings, who held a 39-27 advantage on the glass.

Emma Stoehr led the Jimmies with 15 points and four assists, while Paige Schmidt scored 10.

Valley City State shot 34 percent overall (16-47), 25 percent on 3-pointers (3-12) and 79 percent at the free throw line (19-24). Jamestown finished the game at 41 percent overall (23-56), 17 percent on 3’s (3-18) and 50 percent at the line (7-14).

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — South Dakota State has advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision semifinals for the second straight year — and its reward is a matchup against powerful rivals North Dakota State.

The 13-0 Bison will play host to the 10-2 Jacks Friday night in the Fargodome, (7-p.m., on CSi 18 ESPN 2) where North Dakota State is 23-1 in FCS playoff games. The Bison are seeking their seventh national championship in eight years.

Despite playing second fiddle in the series, the Jackrabbits are the last team to beat the Bison, in 2017, and also defeated them in the Fargodome, in 2016. But they are 0-3 against North Dakota State in the playoffs.

South Dakota State running back Mikey Daniel says the Jacks aren’t intimidated but need to “play our game and go on all cylinders.”

The Jackrabbits have made the postseason seven years in a row and eight times in 10 seasons.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — South Dakota State linebacker Christian Rozeboom tried watching last year’s Football Championship Subdivision title game between rival North Dakota State and the team that knocked them out of the semifinals, James Madison. It wasn’t long before he turned the channel.

“It was just a little bittersweet,” Rozeboom said of seeing the Bison win their sixth FCS title in Frisco, Texas, after the most successful season in Jackrabbits history fell one game short.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Carson Wentz isn’t practicing Wednesday because of a back problem.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson says Wentz has “soreness” and “tightness” in his back and needs more evaluation. It’s uncertain whether he can play when Philadelphia (6-7) visits the Los Angeles Rams (11-2) on Sunday night.

NFL Network’s (CSi 43) Ian Rapoport tweeted, according to his sources, that Wentz is not expected to play this week on the road against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday night. “Depending on the result, given the time of year, Wentz may not play again in 2018. The team is still gathering info on his health,” Rapoport concluded.

Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles would start if Wentz can’t play.
