Medina  (NDHP) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a one vehicle crash Thursday injured a child and adult on Stutsman County Road 68, 15 mile north of Medina, at 5:30-p.m.

The patrol says 27 year old Addison Hofmann, of Medina, was driving a 2008 Honda Civic northbound through a curved portion of the road and failed to negotiate the curve at the crest of a hill.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cargill plans to sell its malt operations to a European business.

The Star Tribune reports that the Minnetonka-based agribusiness is seeking regulatory approvals to sell the business in the second half of 2019 to Boortmalt, a subsidiary of French-based cereal grains cooperative Axereal.

Cargill says in a statement it plans to focus on its other food and beverage ingredient groups.

Cargill’s malt business has 15 plants around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the United States. Boortmalt has numerous plants across Europe, including France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Croatia and Hungary.

Cargill announced last spring it was closing its malt plant near Jamestown, North Dakota, which is one of the company’s three U.S. plants. Cargill entered the malt business in 1979.

Jamestown  (NDFU)  – North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne issued a statement Thursday after President Trump signed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, more commonly known as the 2018 Farm Bill:

“We applaud our congressional delegation and the bipartisan work of the conference committee in getting a farm bill to the President before year’s end. This gives farmers some certainty moving forward in very uncertain economic times. We appreciate the strong crop insurance component in the bill and adjustments made to existing farm programs, including ARC, and FSA loan limits.

“Our country needs a strong farm bill to establish food security for our nation, and safety nets for farmers and the hungry among us who rely daily on SNAP benefits to eat. The richest country in the world can afford to feed its people.”

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A bill named for a Fargo woman who was killed while her baby was cut from her womb looks like it won’t get a vote U.S. House.

The initiative sponsored by outgoing North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp passed the Senate earlier this month. Heitkamp tells KFGO radio that the bill is being blocked by Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte (GOOD’-latt), although it’s not clear why he’s standing in the way.

Goodlatte’s office did not respond to requests for interviews.

The measure is named for Savanna Greywind, who had ties to both the Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain reservations in North Dakota. The bill aims to improve tribal access to federal crime information databases and create standardized protocols for responding to cases of missing and slain Native American women.

ROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) — The parent company of Caribou Coffee and Bruegger’s Bagels says hackers gained access to customer information at 265 of its stores, mostly in Minnesota.

The Minnesota-based company says the data breach occurred between Aug. 28 and Dec. 3. Caribou says it’s possible that customer name and credit card information may have been taken.

The company didn’t say how many people may have been affected. But it says about 200 of the affected stores are in Minnesota, while the rest are in Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and Kansas.

The company says payments made through Caribou Coffee Perks accounts or other loyalty accounts weren’t affected, nor were orders placed online with associated bagel shops.

Caribou says it believes the breach has been contained but advises customers to monitor their credit card statements and credit reports.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum won’t stand in the way of an attempt to bring legal sports betting to North Dakota but he won’t advocate for it either, a spokesman said.

North Dakota is one of many states attempting to capitalize on the U.S. Supreme Court’s lifting of a federal ban on sports gambling. Two Republican lawmakers, Reps. Jason Dockter of Bismarck and Thomas Beadle of Fargo, are crafting separate legislation that would allow sports betting, hoping to generate revenue for the charitable gambling industry and the state.

Burgum spokesman Mike Nowatzki said the first-term GOP governor has not reviewed the draft legislation but he “is open to looking at ways to potentially capitalize on the national change.”

North Dakota voters and lawmakers, once hostile to expanding gambling, have done an about-face in recent years, adding more games of chance that have helped grow it to a quarter-billion-dollar annual industry.

Legislatures in Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island already have legalized sports betting. And several states already have sports betting bills set for consideration in early 2019, including Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.

Legislation by Dockter and Beadle had not been filed as of Thursday, but they say it will be ready when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 3. Dockter’s bill would permit gambling on college and professional sports, while Beadle’s would allow only the latter.

Rookie Jaylen Samuels ran for a career-high 142 yards and made a critical third-down reception in the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ 17-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Samuels set up Ben Roethlisberger’s (RAHTH’-lihs-bur-gurz) two touchdown passes in the first half to help Pittsburgh end a three-game losing streak. His late reception led to a field goal that capped the scoring late in the game.

Samuels got the majority of the carries while Connor missed his second straight game with a sprained left ankle.

NFL-NEWS

Gordon punished again

UNDATED (AP) — Josh Gordon’s on-again, off-again NFL career is on hold once again.

The NFL says the New England Patriots receiver has been returned to the reserve/commissioner suspended list indefinitely for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the league’s substance abuse policy.

He missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in 2017 and at the time revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that he drank or used marijuana before games.

Gordon said earlier Thursday that he was stepping away from football to focus on his mental health, but vowed to work his way back into the sport.

He was traded by the Browns in September and played in 10 games for the Pats, catching 40 passes for 720 yards and three touchdowns.

In other NFL news:

— Eric Reid says he is “not surprised” he has been drug tested by the NFL six times in the past 11 weeks. But his Panthers teammates and coaches are growing increasingly annoyed at the frequency of the league’s “random” drug testing policy. Reid says it all stems from his pending collusion case against the NFL that alleges owners conspired to keep him out of the league for kneeling during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice.

— The Titans have placed running back David Fluellen on injured reserve and filled his roster spot by promoting linebacker Nigel Harris from the practice squad.

— The Panthers have placed outside linebacker Shaq Thompson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The team signed undrafted rookie quarterback Kyle Allen to the active roster from the practice squad on Thursday.

— Browns offensive line coach Bob Wylie broke an ankle during Thursday’s practice. The team provided no information on how the popular assistant was injured.

— Jets players, coaches and ownership have teamed up to commit to donating $800,000 to social justice causes. The team announced that funds will be given to five nonprofit organizations that focus on combating social inequality and reducing barriers to opportunities for people.

NHL…

UNDATED (AP) —  Bryan Rust has eight goals in his last six games after netting two more in the Penguins’ fourth win in five games, 2-1 against the Wild. Casey DeSmith turned back 40 shots and blanked Minnesota after Jordan Greenway’s goal 7:13 into the game.

The Philadelphia Flyers had originally planned to give goaltending prospect Carter Hart a full season in the minors to prepare himself for the NHL. Hart’s learning curve appears to be shorter than they thought after winning back-to-back starts since his promotion earlier this week.

Hart followed Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Detroit by stopping 31 shots in the Flyers’ 2-1 victory against Nashville. The 20-year-old Hart made two big saves to help kill off the Predators’ lengthy 5-on-3 power play late in the second period.

Claude Giroux (jah-ROO’) and Jakub Voracek scored for the Flyers, who are 2-0 since interim coach Scott Gordon replaced the fired Dave Hakstol (HAK’-stahl) on Monday.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— The Jets made it six wins in their last seven games as Nikolaj Ehlers (NIH’-koh-ly EE’-lurz) recorded his fourth career hat trick and Mason Appleton got his first career goal to lead a 5-3 victory at San Jose. — The league-leading Lightning pulled out a 5-4 win at Calgary on J.T. Miller’s goal in the seventh round of a shootout. Louis Domingue (doh-MIHNG’) made seven of his 34 saves in overtime as Tampa Bay improved to 27-7-2 overall, and 10-0-1 in its last 11.

— The Maple Leafs rolled to a 6-1 rout of the Panthers behind two goals apiece from Auston Matthews and John Tavares. Matthews finished with four points, Morgan Rielly had four assists and Mitch Marner added a goal and two helpers as Toronto avenged Saturday’s overtime loss at Florida.

— The Blue Jackets earned a 2-1 win over the Devils as Cam Atkinson scored on a penalty shot and Sergei Bobrovsky (boh-BRAHF’-skee) stopped 30 shots. Nick Foligno (foh-LEE’-noh) also scored as Columbus finished 3-2-1 on its six-game homestand.

— The Golden Knights trailed 2-1 until William Karlsson and Paul Stastny (STAS’-nee) scored 63 seconds apart in the third period of a 4-2 verdict over the Islanders. Nate Schmidt furnished an empty-net goal and two assists as Vegas ended New York’s three-game winning streak.

— The Blackhawks have their first winning streak since October after Patrick Kane delivered two goals and an assist in a 5-2 decision over the Stars. Alex DeBrincat had a goal and two assists for last-place Chicago.

Jonathan Bernier made 38 saves and was perfect following Andrei Svechnikov’s (SVEHCH’-nih-kahvz) goal 90 seconds into the second period.

Bulls lose Portis

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Bulls continue to lose players as they try to climb from the bottom of the NBA standings.

The team expects forward Bobby Portis to miss two to four weeks because of a sprained right ankle suffered in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s loss to Brooklyn. The team said an MRI on Thursday showed no structural damage.

Portis appeared in five games after returning from a sprained knee ligament. He is averaging 11.9 points and eight rebounds in nine games this season.

Leading scorer Zach LaVine is expected to miss a total of two to four weeks after spraining his left ankle against Orlando in Mexico City on Dec. 13.

The Bulls are a league-worst 7-25.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — A week ago, President Donald Trump said he’d “proud” to shut down the government if Congress didn’t give him the money he wanted for his long-promised border wall with Mexico. Now, the government is heading toward a partial shutdown if a spending impasse isn’t settled by midnight. And Trump is saying that if enough Senate Democrats don’t go along with a House-passed plan that includes the border money, then it’ll be a “Democrat Shutdown!”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is leaving the job by the end of February following two tumultuous years struggling to soften and moderate President Donald Trump’s hardline and sometimes sharply changing policies. A senior U.S. official says Mattis went to the White House with his resignation letter Thursday and spoke to Trump for about 45 minutes.

WASHINGTON (AP) — By summer, up to half of the 14,000 American troops serving in Afghanistan could be pulled out of the country.
