In conjunction to the sobriety checkpoint, NDHP conducted saturation patrols on Dec. 28 and Dec. 29 in Stutsman and Barnes Counties. Over the two-night period, there was 1 person charged with DUI.

The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols is to deter drinking and driving. This year in North Dakota, approximately 32.3 percent of fatal crashes have been alcohol-related. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually assaulting a young girl.

Forty-nine-year-old Ricky Chenoweth had changed his plea to guilty to two felony counts of gross sexual imposition before he was sentenced Monday by South Central District Judge Bruce Haskell, in one of his last cases before leaving the bench.

The Bismarck Tribune says Haskell also imposed five years of probation for Chenoweth who expressed remorse for his crime. Haskell told him that his regret “doesn’t really help things very much.” The judge said the girl’s life has been dramatically affected by the assault and that he wasn’t convinced Chenoweth was all that remorseful.

Chenoweth will receive seven weeks credit for time he’s served in jail.

Haskell’s term ends Tuesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers will face tough spending choices when they convene Thursday to kick off the new legislative session.

The state’s economy is slowly emerging from a years-long rut due to depressed oil and agriculture prices.

Gov. Doug Burgum begins the session with his State of the State address in the afternoon. The first-term Republican governor is expected to talk about the challenges facing North Dakota and its fiscal health.

Burgum unveiled a $14.3 billion budget last month that increases state spending 5 percent. Lawmakers will use that as their budgetary starting point.

Not everything in the session is about the budget. Notable bills so far include a proposal that would give the Legislature final say on successful citizen-led initiatives that amend the state constitution.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The developer of the Dakota Access oil pipeline missed a year-end deadline to plant thousands of trees along the pipeline corridor in North Dakota, but the company said it was still complying with a settlement of allegations it violated state rules during construction.

Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners, which built the $3.8 billion pipeline that’s now moving North Dakota oil to Illinois, is falling back on a provision of the September 2017 agreement that provides more time should the company run into problems. The company must provide 20,000 trees to county soil conservation districts along the pipeline’s 359-mile (578-kilometer) route across North Dakota.

The deal with North Dakota’s Public Service Commission settled allegations that ETP removed too many trees in some areas and that it improperly handled a pipeline route change after discovering Native American artifacts. The artifacts were not disturbed.

The agreement required the company to replant trees and shrubs at a higher ratio in the disputed areas, along with an additional 20,000 trees along the entire route. ETP filed documents in October detailing efforts by a contractor to plant 141,000 trees and shrubs, but the PSC asked the company a month later to provide more documentation that it had complied with all settlement terms.

COLLEGE BOWL GAMES…

UNDATED (AP) — The nation’s longest winning streak in college football is over.

Central Florida had won 25 straight dating to last season before 11th-ranked LSU knocked off the No. 7 Knights, 40-32 at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz.

Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow shook off a vicious early hit to throw for 394 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 21 of his 34 passes, including two TDs to Justin Jefferson.

Burrow was slow getting up after being blindsided by 313-pound defensive lineman Joey Connors on an interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

LSU’s defensive front made life difficult for UCF quarterback Darriel Mack Jr., who was sacked five times and was forced to rush numerous throws.

UCF was limited to 250 total yards after entering the game ranked third in the nation at 545 yards per game.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-OKLAHOMA RILEY

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — It appears Lincoln Riley will be staying in Norman, Oklahoma.

The Sooners and their head football coach have agreed to a contract extension, which should quell speculation about the second-year coach being lured away by an NFL team.

NBA-RAPTORS-LOWRY

Lowry gets back injections

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry has had pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory injections for his sore lower back.

The team said Tuesday he was treated Friday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Coach Nick Nurse said Monday “things are progressing really well” and it “shouldn’t be too long” before Lowry returns. There is, however, no specific timetable.

The four-time All-Star has been dealing with back and hip ailments and has missed seven of the last eight games.

Toronto also said center Jonas Valanciunas (val-an-CHOO’-nihs) had stitches removed from his surgically repaired left hand Saturday. He’s expected to miss at least a few more weeks.

NHL…

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The Boston Bruins had a little luck of the Irish as they captured the NHL’s 11th Winter Classic at Notre Dame.

Sean Kuraly (KUR’-ah-lee) scored the tiebreaking goal off a scramble near the net midway through the third period of the Bruins’ 4-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. David Pastrnak had a goal and an assist as the Bruins won for the second time in three Winter Classic appearances. Tuukka (TOO’-kah) Rask stopped 36 shots to help Boston hand the Blackhawks their second loss in seven games.

Chicago is winless in four Winter Classic games and 1-5 in six outdoor contests.
