Alvin Berndt, 90, Jamestown, ND, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2019 at Ave Maria Village, Jamestown.

Alvin was born Dec. 13, 1928 in Valley City, ND to William and Sophie (Wentz) Berndt. He lived in Kensal and then later settled in Jamestown.

Understanding the importance of hard work, Alvin did numerous odd jobs before finding work on Oct. 10, 1947 with the Northern Pacific Railroad, which later merged to the Burlington Northern. Those working with him would know him as AB. Alvin also worked as a carpenter on the side. On March 6, 1950, Alvin married Darlene Shirley Britzman and together they had four children. During this time, Alvin continued to work on the railroad to provide for his family before retiring on Dec. 15, 1990.

His church played a very important role in his life. When he was healthy, Alvin attended church regularly and at times had an active leadership role.

After retiring he enjoyed working on his hobby farm, raising sheep, cows, pigs and ducks. He enjoyed his garden and in the summer could be seen eating fresh tomatoes from it. He also enjoyed spending time with his many grandchildren and sharing his hobby farm with them.

Alvin is survived by his children Susan (Art) Dodds, Nancy (Joe) Martinez, Gerald William Berndt, and Linda (Tony) Albrecht, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
