Jamestown (CSi) Jamestown Starting February 1, 2019, Stutsman County will be changing its emergency notification service from CodeRED to a company called Everbridge.
The transition to the new notification system began in early November and has been a continuous process ever since. CodeRED will continue to be utilized until the switch is made on February 1. In December, individuals in Stutsman County, receiving their annual property tax statements in the mail received an insert briefly explaining the change in notification services.
On a recent Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Emergency Manager/9-1-1 Coordinator, Jerry Bergquist explained, as with CodeRED, all land-line phone numbers are automatically included in the new “Stutsman Alerts” system powered by Everbridge for emergency notifications. This does not include weather alerts.
Both land-lines and cell phones will continue to be able to register for as many as six types of weather alerts.
He said, if your land-line and/or cell phone was registered for weather alerts or emergency notifications through the CodeRED system, you will need to re-register to continue receiving those same notifications from the new “Stutsman Alerts” system powered by Everbridge.
The database of landlines used by the 911 system was imported into the Everbridge system.

Jamestown (NDFU) — The North Dakota Farmers Union says, the Environmental Protection Agency’s recent position that it lacks the authority to allow year-round sale of E15, or reinstate ethanol blending requirements that were lost after the administration granted ethanol production waivers to oil refineries, has farmers turning to President Donald Trump for answers.
North Dakota Farmers Union President, Mark Watne, says,“The President has repeatedly voiced support for American farmers, renewable fuels and promised us E15 year-round. Where is that support now? This about-face only kicks us more when we are already down.”
In addition to the trade war, Watne says farmers have felt the loss of income due to decreased demand for biofuels, especially corn ethanol. “Ethanol drives the demand for corn, and corn helps increase commodity prices,” he said, noting that the administration’s granting of “financial hardship” waivers to oil refineries has cut demand for biofuels by 2.25 billion gallons in 2016 and 2017 alone.
He adds, the waivers were meant for small oil refineries that were under financial distress, allowing them to reduce their production of biofuels and circumvent Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) requirements. But some of those waivers are questionable and should be reversed, citing a waiver to an Exxon Mobil-owned refinery last year. Exxon is the nation’s largest oil and gas company that reported earnings of more than $20 billion in 2017.
Watne says, “The loss of market by these waivers hurts farmers, not to mention the environment and reduction in harmful emissions. If EPA won’t restore RFS requirements, the administration needs to find offsets to the hole they created in our market. E15 can be one part of that solution and we should be testing and looking at E30.”
Watne says national energy labs have demonstrated that high-octane blends, such as E30, do not impair performance in non-flex fuel or standard vehicles. He said E30 provides the most efficiency and benefits to the environment, while meeting the octane levels needed for better efficiency in the auto industry.
Jamestown (CSi) A Cleveland, North Dakota man facing several charges after his nephews came forward more than 20 years later to report his sexual assaults, made his initial court appearance, Wednesday in Southeast District Court, in front of Judge Troy LeFevre.

His attorney Mark Friese said the court is awaiting the response of the Stutsman County state’s attorney’s office regarding motions to dismiss the charges stemming from similar charges that had previously been dismissed.
LeFevre said a judge would be assigned to rule on the motions as the state files its response.
Greenshields was released on his own recognizance.
He has been ordered to have no contact with complainants in the case.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police in Fargo have released the name of a woman whose body was found in a car in a parking lot.
Police identify the woman as 65-year-old Barbara Anne Barry. Authorities say Barry had not been reported as a missing person and apparently was homeless.
The woman was found Wednesday about noon in the Cash Wise lot in south Fargo. Authorities believe Barry had been there for a few months and do not suspect foul play.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Republican-led House endorsed legislation Thursday that would prevent a doctor from using instruments like clamps, scissors and forceps to remove a fetus from the womb.
Representatives voted to outlaw the abortion practice known as dilation and evacuation, the most commonly used procedure in second-trimester abortions. The bill uses the non-medical term “dismemberment abortion” and is graphic in describing it.
Except in cases of an emergency, doctors performing the procedure would be charged with a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The measure says a woman having the abortion would not face charges.
Abortion-rights groups argue that banning the procedure is unconstitutional because it interferes with private medical decisions.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota is sending an emergency response team to assist in efforts to control an escalating measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest.
The North Dakota Department of Health Emergency Preparedness and Response will deploy a five-member unit to relieve existing members of the Washington state response group, the Bismarck Tribune reported.
“We are pleased to assist with this serious public health emergency,” said Tim Wiedrich, Emergency Preparedness and Response’s section chief. “Our participation not only assists Washington but also strengthens our North Dakota response capabilities.”

Knicks agree to trade Porzingis to Dallas
NEW YORK (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks and struggling New York Knicks have pulled off the first blockbuster deal before the Feb. 7 NBA trade deadline.
The Knicks send former first-round pick Kristaps Porzingis (KRIHS’-tahps pohr-ZIHN’-gihs) to the Mavs, along with guards Tim Hardaway Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee. New York receives Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews and two future first-round picks.
The Knicks made the surprising move after saying Porzingis requested a trade earlier Thursday. The fourth player taken in the 2015 draft is still recovering from a torn knee ligament suffered last season.
Smith had an outstanding rookie season last year, but he’s become expendable following the emergence of teenager Luka Doncic (DAHN’-chihch).
Hardaway has two more years and about $37 million left on his contract.
The trade won’t be finalized until players pass physicals.
NBA-ALL-STAR RESERVES
Westbrook leads list of All-Star reserves
UNDATED (AP) — Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook and New Orleans forward-center Anthony Davis are among the 14 players selected as reserves for the NBA All-Star game set for Feb. 17 in Charlotte.
Westbrook has been named the All-Star game MVP in two of his eight appearances in the midwinter classic. Davis is currently slated to represent the Pelicans in the game, but he has demanded to be moved before the Feb. 7 trade deadline.
Joining Westbrook and Davis in the Western Conference player pool are San Antonio big man LaMarcus Aldridge, Denver center Nikola Jokic (NEE’-koh-lah YOH’-kihch), Portland guard Damian Lillard, Golden State guard Klay Thompson and Minnesota center Karl-Anthony Towns.
The Eastern Conference reserve pool consists of Milwaukee forward Khris Middleton, Philadelphia swingman Ben Simmons and Orlando center Nikola Vucevic, along with Washington guard Bradley Beal, Detroit forward Blake Griffin, Toronto guard Kyle Lowry and Indiana guard Victor Oladipo (oh-lah-Dee’-poh). Commissioner Adam Silver will name a replacement for Oladipo, who is out for the season with a knee injury.
Lakers forward LeBron James and Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) are the team captains and will draft the game rosters, which will be selected on Feb. 7.
In other NBA news:
— Cavaliers All-Star forward Kevin Love took part in a contact scrimmage and could be days away from returning to the lineup. Love has been out since late October after undergoing surgery on his left foot. He played in just four games before the pain became too much and he opted for surgery.

Judge rejects possible ‘do-over’ of Rams-Saints playoff game
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge is refusing to order the NFL to implement a rule that could have led to a do-over of the NFC championship game between the New Orleans Saints and the Los Angeles Rams.
U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan on Thursday rejected arguments by two Saints season ticket holders who filed suit against the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell. At issue was game officials’ failure to call interference or unnecessary roughness penalties against a Rams player at a key point in the final minutes of regulation play.
The non-call caused the Saints to settle for a tiebreaking field goal late in the fourth quarter, but the Rams tied it in the waning seconds of regulation before winning in overtime.
The lawsuit argued that the league should invoke a rule allowing Goodell to order a redo of the game due to “extraordinarily unfair acts.”

Arenado gets record $26 mil deal for 2019
UNDATED (AP) — Nolan Arenado (ar-eh-NAH’-doh) has shattered a major league record without breaking a sweat.
The Colorado Rockies third baseman will make $26 million this season after accepting the largest one-year salary for an arbitration-eligible player. Arenado broke the mark set by Josh Donaldson, who worked out a $23 million deal with the Blue Jays before last season.
Arenado has won a Gold Glove at third base in each of his six major league seasons. He is a career .291 hitter with 186 home runs, 616 RBIs and an .886 OPS.
Arenado is eligible for free agency after the 2019 season and figures to be the top player on the market next offseason.
In other baseball news:
— The Nationals and outfielder Michael A. Taylor have argued baseball’s first salary arbitration hearing this year. Taylor asked for a raise from $2.5 million to $3.5 million, and the Nationals countered with $3.25 million after he hit .227 with six homers and 28 RBIs last year. A decision is expected Friday.
— The Rangers will use specially designed synthetic playing surface rather than grass in their new retractable-roof stadium that opens in 2020. The decision will make the Rangers the fourth of the 30 major league teams to use artificial turf.

Durr scored 14 of her 24 points in the second quarter, Dana Evans added 20 points and Louisville held UConn to 38 percent shooting in a 78-69 victory Thursday night.
