Arlen Russell Shape, “Grumpy”,67, Valley City, ND passed away on February 11, 2019, after a very long and brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, February 15, 2019 at Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Thursday, February 14 with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 also at the church.

Burial will be in the Spring at Memory Gardens.

Arlen was born in Valley City, April 7, 1951 to Russell and Lorraine (Buck) Shape. After graduating from North Central High School, Arlen met the love of his life, Pat Downs. They were married June 29, 1973. In the early years of their marriage, Arlen pursued a career in farming and ranching.

When the family moved to Valley City in 1993, Arlen joined Aggregate Industries where he worked for nearly 25 years. During his time there, he met many great friends and colleagues

In addition to his work, Arlen had many hobbies. Those who knew him well would often say he never sat down. His pride and joy was the restoring of a 1963 Chevy Nova. When he wasn’t riding his motorcycle, he also loved to hunt andfish – something he shared with, and taught, his grandsons.

Arlen is survived by his wife, Pat; son, Chad (Kari) Shape; daughter, Kellie (Erin) Albrecht.

He leaves behind his four grandsons that meant more than the world to him – Zachary, Austin, Derek, and Henry. He is also survived by his brothers, Marvin (Terry), Keith, and Kevin Shape; his sister, Sue (Tom) Paske; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Arlen is preceded in death byhis parents, Russel and Lorraine; his sister, Patricia; and his in-laws, Bob and Juliet Downs.
