Noelle Josephson (FR/Ramsey, MN) scored 13 points while Emma Stoehr (SO/Woodbury, MN) added 10 as the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team closed out the season with a 70-69 win over No. 14 Morningside (Iowa) Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown took a 20-12 lead after the first quarter behind 6-of-12 shooting from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range.

Morningside outscored UJ 20-19 in the second, but the Jimmies took a 39-32 lead into the half.

Josephson sank a pair of free throws with 7:59 left in the third to give Jamestown a 12-point lead, 45-33. A 12-4 Morningside run cut UJ’s lead to 49-45 with 2:16 in the quarter.

The Mustangs rallied to tie the game on Faith Meyer’s basket with 2:47 left. Meyer missed the free throw on the and-one opportunity, but later sank one of two on Morningside’s next possession to retake the lead at 69-68.

Josephson scored the eventual game-winning basket with 1:53, and the Jimmie defense forced Morningside to miss its final six shots and commit four turnovers down the stretch.

Jenna Doyle (SR/Princeton, MN) added nine points for UJ, and Mya Buffetta (SO/Mountain Iron, MN) chipped in with eight. Marina Nowak (SR/Rogers, MN) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Jamestown finishes the season at 14-16 and 8-14 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Kevin Oberweiser (SR/Drummond, MT) scored 25 points and Jack Talley (SO/Sioux Falls, SD) posted a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds as the 15th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with an 88-75 win over No. 2 Morningside (Iowa) College Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

The win gives the Jimmies (25-5, 15-5 Great Plains Athletic Conference) the second seed in the GPAC Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. Jamestown will host seventh-seed Hastings (Neb.) at 6:00 p.m.

Morningside (25-2, 17-2 GPAC) took early 9-0 and 11-2 leads, but the Jimmies used a 13-4 run, capped off by a Terrell Alfred (JR/Orlando, FL) three-pointer, to tie the game. UJ took its biggest lead of the half, 10 points, following a Brock Schrom (SO/Grand Rapids, MN) basket with 32 seconds left before halftime.

Oberweiser’s three-pointer at the 3:59 mark made it 80-63 Jimmies, and it appeared the game was over. However, Morningside went on a 12-1 run and cut the UJ lead to 81-75 with 2:25 in the game.

A strong defensive stand by Jamestown coupled with the game’s final seven points sealed the victory for the Orange and Black. The Mustangs had an eleven-game winning streak snapped, but still came away with the GPAC’s top seed in the postseason tournament.

Alfred finished with 19 points and Jon Purintun (SR/Linton, ND) was also in double figures with 12. Schrom had 10 rebounds to go along with six points.

Jamestown defeated Hastings in both of their regular season meetings, 90-80 on January 2 in Hastings and 92-91 January 26 in Jamestown.
