Jack Talley (SO/Sioux Falls, SD) had a career night in recording his fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 23 points, 17 rebounds, and six assists as the 13th-ranked University of Jamestown men’s basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament with a 95-86 win over Hastings (Neb.) College Wednesday evening.
With the win, the Jimmies will host Dordt (Iowa) College Saturday at 3 p.m. The Defenders advanced with an 86-84 win over Briar Cliff (Iowa).
Jon Purintun (SR/Linton, ND) added 23 points for Jamestown, who also had Kevin Oberweiser (SR/Drummond, MT) (12), Brady Birch (SO/Melrose, MN) (12), Isaiah Dobson (JR/Stillwater, MN) (10), and Brock Strom (10) reach double figures.
Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, as Hastings was 13-for 35 (37.1 percent) and UJ 11-for-33 (33.3 percent). The score was 34-34 at halftime.
Hastings took a 38-37 lead 1:41 into the second half on a Bart Hiscock basket, but back-to-back three-pointers from Dobson and buckets by Oberweiser and Purintun gave the Jimmies a 47-38 advantage just 75 seconds later.
Talley converted a three-point play to make it 57-45 Jimmies with 11:12 remaining, and the Orange and Black maintained a double-digit lead for most of the game.
Hiscock finished with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Broncos, who finish the season at 19-12. Kevin Miller added 17 points, and Ben Wahlberg (14), Shane Chamberlain (13), and Zach Kitten (10) all were in double figures.
Jamestown (26-5) split two regular season meetings with Dordt (19-12), taking an 96-89 overtime victory in Sioux Center, Iowa, and falling 97-94 at Harold Newman Arena on February 6.
