(CSi)  Daylight saving time starts March 10, 2019. The official time change is at 2 a.m., so most people move their clocks ahead one hour before they go to bed Saturday night. Most cell phones and other electronics will make the change on their own, but traditional clocks must be manually adjusted. It’s also a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors.

Jamestown  (CSi)  Jamestown Public Works reports that due to City utility repairs along the 1400 block of 10th St SE (between 13th Ave & 14th Ave SE) 10th St SE will be closed to through traffic beginning Thursday, March 7, 2019 at approximately 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. It is anticipated the repairs will be completed during the work day.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Spiritwood Energy Park Board of Directors is visiting with New Energy Blue, the company with plans for  a cellulosic ethanol plant, there,  and in talks with North Dakota Soybean Processors, planning a soybean crushing plant.

SEPA Chief Operating officer Connie Ova says, she has spoken  with New Energy Blue, and North Dakota Soybean Processors, and that neither project is ready to announce their plans.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is offering a grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone important to them, whether the loss is recent or from years past.  The group will meet once a week at 7:00 p.m. at the United Presbyterian  Church, 302 2nd Ave SE in Jamestown beginning on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 and will run for 6 weeks.

In his book, Understanding Your Grief, internationally recognized expert in the field of loss and grief, Dr. Alan Wolfelt states, “You can benefit from a connectedness that comes from people who have also had a death in their lives.  Support groups, where people come together and share the common bond of experience, can be invaluable in helping you and your grief and supporting your need to mourn long after the event of the death”

In our fast paced society, people who have had a significant loss are often expected to be ‘over it’ in a matter of a few weeks.  They may even expect this of themselves.  In reality, it may take years for someone to work through his or her grief.  The support group experience allows individuals to express grief in their own unique way and on their own unique timetable.

The group is free of charge, however, participants are asked to register to ensure that enough materials are available.  Participants should plan to attend all six sessions. For more information, or to register, please call Diane at 701-320-4915 or Eileen 701-269-4521.

CENTER, N.D. (AP) — Two New Salem residents are dead and a third injured after a one-vehicle crash in Oliver County. The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the car the three people were in went out of control on a curve on a rural road and rolled in the ditch shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday. The 55-year-old man driving the car died at the scene about half a mile south of Center, as did a 54-year-old male passenger. A 52-year-old female passenger was taken to a Bismarck hospital with injuries the patrol says are not life-threatening.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Nurses at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck have voted to unionize two years after rejecting a similar move to join the Minnesota Nurses Association.

The union says an “overwhelming majority” of nurses voted in favor of unionizing in voting Tuesday and Wednesday. In 2017 when the nurses rejected the union some expressed concern with operational changes they said were harming patient care, as well as layoffs and large workloads.

The Bismarck Tribune reports says CHI St. Alexius Health spokeswoman Ellen Holt says the hospital would have preferred to work with nurses directly, but is committed to providing exceptional care.

The union declined to release the vote tally.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Republican-led Legislature believes it should be tougher for citizens to amend the state constitution.

The House on Wednesday voted 65-26 to raise to 60 percent the margin necessary for voters to approve a constitutional amendment, instead of a majority.

The Senate passed a similar resolution 34-12 on Wednesday. But senators also want to double the number of signatures required to put a measure before voters. The Senate resolution also changes the deadline to submit signatures from 120 days to 240 days prior to an election.

Votes in both chambers largely fell along party lines, with Democrats dissenting. Senators will now review the House resolution, and vice versa.

Any resolution passed by both chambers would have to be approved by voters.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has signed his first bill of the legislative session.

The first-term Republican governor on Wednesday signed the bipartisan legislation that removes mandatory minimum sentences for some drug crimes.

The bill allows judges to depart from the mandatory sentence guidelines and decide their own punishment.

There were more than 900 bills introduced in the legislative session that began in January.

EDMORE, N.D. (AP) — A pastor in Ramsey County has pleaded guilty to stealing from his church and been sentenced.

Donald Reynolds was accused of taking nearly $35,000 from High Plains Ministry in Edmore over a 14-year period, by receiving reimbursements for bogus charges.

KFGO radio reports he’s been sentenced to a month in jail or 300 hours of community service, three years of probation and restitution.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The manager of a horse racing track in Fargo has been fired for derogatory remarks he allegedly made on social media about two people opposed to a bill in the Legislature that would financially help the park.

The head of the board of directors for the North Dakota Horse Park tells KFGO radio he had no choice but to fire manager Mike Schmitz after Schmitz wrote on Facebook that one of the men who has spoken out against the bill was cheating on his wife and is a cocaine user.

Board leader Levi Otis says the vote to fire Schmitz was unanimous.

The legislative proposal would help the track pay off a large special assessment bill to the city of Fargo.

Schmitz didn’t return phone messages left by The Associated Press.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol has identified those involved in a fatal crash this week near Watford City.

The SUV’s driver, 18-year-old Clinton Tsosie, and passengers 14-year-old Albertina Joe, 11-year-old Neveah Joe and 7-year-old Johnathan Joe were injured.

The patrol says the SUV rear-ended the semi as it slowed to make a turn. The semi driver wasn’t hurt.

MLB NEWS

Dodgers still hoping for Kershaw in opener

UNDATED (AP) — Clayton Kershaw has not yet been ruled out for opening day by the Los Angeles Dodgers despite all the time he’s missed at spring training with a sore left shoulder.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that, for now at least, Kershaw remains scheduled to start March 28 for the two-time defending NL champions. However, that possibility seems unlikely based on the progress the three-time Cy Young Award winner would need to make in the next few weeks.

In other MLB news:

— Yankees ace Luis Severino expects to resume a throwing program in two weeks. Severino will miss his scheduled opening-day start on March 28 because of right-shoulder inflammation. He was scratched from his first planned spring-training start on Tuesday after feeling discomfort after throwing his first slider in a pregame bullpen session.

— Royals catcher Salvador Perez has undergone Tommy John surgery that will cause him to miss the upcoming season. The recovery time is usually about a year, meaning Perez could be back for opening day next season.

— Red Sox pitcher Steven Wright has been suspended for 80 games following a positive test for Human Growth Hormone. The suspension is the latest in a series of setbacks for the 34-year-old knuckleball pitcher. Wright accepted a 15-game suspension in spring training last year under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

— Right-hander Bud Norris and the Blue Jays have finalized a minor league contract that puts him in their big league camp. The 34-year-old Norris had 47 saves over the past two seasons for the Angels and Cardinals. He went 3-6 with a 3.59 ERA and 28 saves in 64 appearances with St. Louis last year.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

— The Bears continue to stockpile kickers by signing Chris Blewitt, days before the team plans to release Cody Parkey. Blewitt left Pittsburgh as the school’s career scoring leader with 363 points from 2013-16, but he’s never played in the NFL.

— Former Packers fullback John Kuhn has announced his retirement. Kuhn played nine seasons with the Packers and won the Super Bowl in the 2010 season. He was a part of Packers teams that won five division titles, finished with at least 10 wins in a season seven times and made the playoffs eight times.

— The Broncos are releasing strong safety Darian Stewart. The 30-year-old Stewart spent four productive seasons as a starter in Denver, where he won a Super Bowl ring and earned a Pro Bowl selection.

TENNIS-MURRAY-FUTURE

Murray hopes to play again

LONDON (AP) — Andy Murray says he is pain-free after hip surgery but likely won’t play at Wimbledon.

Murray tells the BBC in an interview he wants to continue playing but the surgeons “couldn’t give me any guarantees.”

After an emotional Australian Open exit in January, the three-time Grand Slam champion had an operation to repair his damaged right hip with a metal implant. The 32-year-old Murray says he is now without pain for the first time in 18 months but cannot do “any high-impact movement.”

In world and national news….

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Trump administration’s effort to make asylum seekers wait in Mexico explicitly targets Spanish-speakers and people from Latin America.

Internal guidelines obtained by The Associated Press also say those who cross illegally must have come as single adults, though the administration is in talks with Mexico to include families. LGBT asylum seekers, pregnant women and those with medical issues are also not to be sent back to Mexico.

The policy launched in San Diego in January is a top priority for U.S. officials to address the burgeoning number of Central Americans arriving at the U.S. border.

The instructions say Mexican officials insist that no more than 20 asylum seekers are returned each day from San Diego to Tijuana, Mexico, underscoring challenges that the U.S. faces with the effort.

SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Chinese tech giant Huawei is launching a U.S. court challenge to a law that labels the company a security risk and would limit its access to the American market for telecom equipment.

Thursday’s announcement comes as Huawei Technologies Ltd., the biggest global maker of network equipment for phone and internet companies, tries to fight off U.S. efforts to persuade allies to exclude the company from next-generation telecom systems.

Huawei said it filed a lawsuit asking a U.S. federal court in Texas to invalidate a portion of this year’s military appropriations act that bars the Trump administration and government contractors from using Huawei equipment.

The company denies U.S. accusations it facilitates Chinese spying or is controlled by the country’s ruling Communist Party.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s military says it’s carefully monitoring North Korean nuclear and missile facilities after the country’s spy agency told lawmakers that new activity was detected at a research center where the North presumably builds its long-range missiles targeting the U.S. mainland.

Seoul’s Defense Ministry spokeswoman Choi Hyun-soo said Thursday the U.S. and South Korean militaries are maintaining close intelligence coordination over developments at the North’s missile research center in Pyongyang and also a separate long-range rocket site. She did not elaborate what the developments were.

But a lawmaker says Seoul’s spy chief in a closed-door intelligence briefing said increased vehicle movement was spotted at the Pyongyang facility.

The North conducted three flight tests of developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles in 2017 that demonstrated potential capability to reach the continental United States.

CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly remains in a Chicago jail as more of his nationally televised interview is set to air.

The R&B singer was taken into custody Wednesday after telling a judge he could not pay $161,000 in back child support. Earlier in the day, “CBS This Morning” aired an interview in which Kelly pleaded with viewers to believe that he’d never had sex with anyone under 17 and never held anyone against her will.

More of the interview is expected to air Thursday.

The interview was his first public defense since being charged with sexually abusing three girls and a woman.

Experts say the TV appearance was risky and could backfire if it gives prosecutors more information to use against him at trial.

BEAUREGARD, Ala. (AP) — Dealing with the dead became a huge, gut-wrenching task in a rural Alabama community where nearly two dozen people died in a tornado outbreak.

The county coroner set up a temporary command post and performed post-mortem exams in the parking lot of a middle school.

He and a minister then held 17 separate meetings with relatives of the 23 people who died. Pastor Rusty Sowell says the hardest part was just opening a door and looking into the faces of people who feared the worst.

Harris says seven funeral homes in all are handling services for the victims, and one mortuary is preparing 10 bodies.

But Harris says he hasn’t had time to think about the emotional magnitude of the loss in a county of more than 160,000 people.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook’s priority is no longer connecting the world. Instead, it wants to help individuals and small groups to carry on private conversations that even Facebook can’t listen in on.

The company’s new strategy, laid out Wednesday by CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, is to prioritize its messaging services over its traditional social network.

As a partial response to two years of turmoil over its privacy lapses and other problems, Facebook will encrypt those services to shield them from prying eyes, including its own.

The plan could better position Facebook in the fast-growing messaging market, allow it to build new services untarnished by the scandals that have plagued its social network, and give it additional insulation from government regulation and oversight.
