TUCSON, Ariz. (uj.edu) — Katie Merchant (FR/South Haven, Minn.) pitched a complete game, striking out a career-high 12 batters, and Morgan Geiszler (SO/Horace, ND) was 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and 2 RBI as the 24th-ranked University of Jamestown softball team finished its Arizona trip with an 8-3 win over Park (Mo.) University Friday.
Jamestown, now 16-6 on the season, went 10-3 at the Tucson Invitational Games.
RBI doubles by Geiszler and Katie Reisdorfer (SO/Fresno, CA) in the first inning and a two-run error in the second put the Jimmies in front 4-3. Meghan Ramage (SR/Grand Forks, ND) doubled to score Geiszler and Sydney Prussia (SO/Detroit Lakes, MN) in the fifth.
Geiszler homered with two outs in the sixth to make it 7-3, then Mariah Martinez (FR/Visalia, Calif.) drove in Steph Cota (FR/Tucson, Ariz.) with a single for UJ’s final run in the seventh.
Merchant (8-3) recorded at least one strikeout in all seven innings and fanned all three batters in the fourth. Her previous high for strikeouts (7) came on March 2 against Siena Heights (Mich.)
Reisdorfer finished with two hits as the Jimmies racked up 11 in all.
UJ is off until March 20, when they are scheduled to host Mount Marty (S.D.) College in the home opener.
