Freshman Riley Perryman hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Valley City State remained undefeated with a walk-off victory.

Valley City State was in control most of the game until Madonna rallied from a 6-3 deficit with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. The Vikings entered the bottom of the inning down 7-6, but wasted little time in claiming the victory. Renee Snyder opened the inning with a hard single to center field, and then Perryman put a 2-0 pitch over the right-field fence for the walk-off win.

Each time Madonna scored in the game, VCSU answered right back in the next half inning. After Madonna tied it at 1-1 in the top of the third, VCSU went up 4-1 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Madonna cut the deficit to 4-3 in the fifth, but the Vikings put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-3. Madonna finally got over the hump with four runs in the seventh, but again VCSU answered with Perryman’s walk-off.

Perryman finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in three. Marissa Hawkins was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Renee Snyder went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Joelle Aiello, Autumn Perry, Kadie Anderson and Jayme Menard each had one hit.

Emily Smith started in the circle and then finished the game as well, picking up the win. Wilson totaled five innings pitched, allowing six hits and three runs. She walked three and struck out four. Smith went the first four innings, and then came back in during Madonna’s seventh inning rally. Emilee Wilson pitched two innings in relief, giving up seven hits and four runs.

VCSU finished with eight runs on 11 hits and two Madonna errors. Madonna finished with seven runs on 13 hits and no Viking errors.

Concordia University 6, VCSU 1
Valley City State faltered for the first time this season in game two, falling 6-1 to a tough Concordia (Neb.) team. The Vikings managed just one run on five hits and committed an uncharacteristic five errors. VCSU had committed just four errors total through the first 15 games of the season.

Concordia scored two runs each in the second, sixth and seventh innings. Concordia’s first two runs were both unearned, and both scored on a play that featured two Viking errors. Four of their six runs were unearned. VCSU pushed across its only run in the sixth inning.

Emily Smith took the hard-luck loss for VCSU after giving up just three hits and two unearned runs in five innings. Emilee Wilson pitched two innings in relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs.

Voni Culp was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead VCSU. Renee Snyder singled and drove in VCSU’s only run. Tatum Lundin and Jayme Menard each added one hit.
