Jimmie Baseball Splits with Briar Cliff, Sunday

TOPEKA, Kan. (uj.edu) — Tanner Roundy (SR/Henderson, NV) allowed one run over six innings and drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth as the University of Jamestown baseball team defeated Briar Cliff (Iowa) 2-1 in the second game of their doubleheader Sunday.

Jared Bentley (JR/Washougal, WA)’s second-inning squeeze bunt scored Matt Meraz (JR/Aurora, CO) to give UJ a 1-0 lead. The Chargers would tie the game on a solo home run by Ben Pigg in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the fourth, Roundy hit a two-out single to score Chase Hacker (JR/Millcreek, WA) from second to make it 2-1 Jamestown. The lefthander would toss two more scoreless innings before yielding to Marshal Burgess (SR/Brandon, MB, Canada) in the seventh. Burgess allowed one hit and walked one while earning his second save of the season.

Roundy (1-0) tied a career high with six strikeouts. Jamestown recorded eight hits in the game, including a double by Meraz.

Offense was tough to come by for the Jimmies in game one, as UJ scored just one run on two hits in a 10-1 loss.

With the score 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Jaden Yackley (SR/Lynnwood, Wash.) led off with a double to left. Drake Pilat (SR/Winnipeg, MB, Canada) singled to put runners on the corners, then later stole second. One out later, Zach Zurbrugg (SR/Bremerton, WA) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 2-1.

Briar Cliff came back with four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, and another in the seventh.

Dru Fitz (JR/Gresham, OR) (1-2) went 4 2/3 innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

Jamestown (12-8, 2-2 Great Plains Athletic Conference) is scheduled to play at Hastings (Neb.) March 23-24.
