Jamestown (Valley News Live/News Dakota) A terrible storm that struck the region March 14th left many helpless, but emergency crews, DOT officials, and officers were still on high alert. In the aftermath, Jamestown Ambulance Service is seeking a woman who helped save a life.
“During the blizzard, we responded to a medical emergency in town in which the entrance to the residence was blocked heavily with drifted snow,” the service states. “In an effort to help our crews, a female individual came bearing shovels and helped our responders shovel through the heavy drifts to clear a path in order to extricate the patient.”
The service took to Facebook in an effort to find and thank the woman.
“We just want the opportunity to thank her in person for her act of kindness,” stated Andrew Berkey, Jamestown Ambulance Operations Manager. “The crew did not get a chance to thank the individual due to the patient’s condition being time sensitive.”
Berkey also wanted to recognize his crews, who braved the conditions to serve the region.
“Our crews also went out in incredibly dangerous situations. They helped other ambulance services who couldn’t reach destinations. They answered every call and overcame challenging obstacles. Our community is lucky to have these men and women here to serve them.”

Valley City ( – Lauren Roscoe is not your typical Valley City State University first-year student. Sure, she’s an elementary education major, like many others at VCSU, but Lauren also serves as the 2018-19 National Student of the Year for SADD—Students Against Destructive Decisions—a national organization with 10,000 chapters across all 50 states (and several U.S. territories) headquartered in Washington, D.C.
SADD aims to help “young people make positive decisions that advance their health and safety” by empowering them “to successfully confront the risks and pressures that challenge them throughout their daily lives.” SADD tackles this mission through peer-to-peer education on issues such as traffic safety, mental health, suicide, violence, and tobacco, alcohol and drug use.
As National Student of the Year, Lauren serves as president of SADD’s National Student Leadership Council and as the organization’s national spokesperson, carrying SADD’s advocacy message across the country. She has traveled to Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, New York and Washington, D.C., among others, and attended events such as the national conference of the Governors Highway Safety Organization held in Atlanta in August 2018. Lauren also serves on SADD’s board of directors and attends that group’s quarterly meetings.
All of that travel makes her a frequent flyer—usually once a month—out of Hector International Airport in Fargo, but otherwise Lauren claims she’s “still a normal student” who enjoys “just hanging out with friends, sitting and talking, or watching movies.”

ROGERS, N.D. (AP) — Project Ignite Light, which provides backpacks filled with basic but useful items to abused or neglected children entering the social services system, has helped more than 16,000 children North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota since its launch in 2008, group representatives say.
Pebbles Thompson, Project Ignite Light founder, said it was more than 10 years ago that she recognized the need to provide support for children in abuse and neglect situations.
She says, “What we do is serve children of extreme child abuse when they’re brought into their local child advocacy center, which is strategically placed in the largest cities of every state. When a child is brought in for a forensic exam or an interview to determine the extent of abuse that they’ve suffered, we provide that child with a backpack on the off-chance this child isn’t going to be returning home. We wanted to make sure they had everything they needed.”
Thompson said these backpacks, called “Bags of Hope”, include fleece tie blankets, pajamas, toothbrushes, books, flashlights, shampoo and other items.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Republican-led Legislature is standing by to see whether first-term GOP Gov. Doug Burgum signs or vetoes the first bill restricting abortion that he’s been sent since taking office.
The Legislature on Friday passed a bill that would require abortion providers to inform women undergoing drug-induced abortions that if they changed their minds, they could still have a live birth. It’s a claim critics argue isn’t supported by medical evidence.
A second House bill restricting abortion is likely headed to a Senate vote this week. That bill would ban the dilation and evacuation method of abortion, which opponents call “human dismemberment abortion.”
Burgum has refused to comment on those bills.
Meanwhile, several pieces of major legislation are still being negotiated by both chambers, including all remaining budget bills.
MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A Mandan elementary school has launched a new program that allows students to write, direct and perform their own stage plays in an effort to help relieve stress.
The Bismarck Tribune reports that Mary Stark Elementary School is partnering with Bismarck theater Dakota Stage Ltd. for a six-week performing arts program for students.
The school’s literacy coach, Vonda Dahl, has researched the toll that stress at home can take on students’ learning. Dahl says “every classroom has a certain number of students that are experiencing some sort of chronic stress.”
She has found that physical activity, playing chess or music, and performing and visual arts can reduce student stress.
Dahl says the school will measure how the theater program affects students academically. She hopes to continue the program next year.

MINOT (AP)—In the spring of 2017, a 15-year-old Mason Walters sat with a busted kneecap near the high jump uprights at University of Jamestown’s Taylor Stadium.
Walters would use the freak track and field injury as motivation to help fuel a prolific basketball career at Jamestown High School. Walters was voted the 2019 Mr. Basketball award winner Saturday, March 16, becoming Jamestown’s second recipient of the award and first since Bryan Flam in 1987.
Walters, a 6-foot-8 forward who’ll be continuing his basketball journey at NAIA Division II University of Jamestown, led Jamestown High to a perfect 27-0 season and its seventh Class A state championship earlier this month in Bismarck.
“That was the most important goal I wanted to accomplish before I graduated,” Walters said. Jamestown hadn’t won a state boys basketball title since 1993. “It’s certainly a great honor. I’m just thankful for my teammates and the season we’ve all had together.”
Walters received 74 points and 12 of 21 first-place votes in the 5-3-1 Mr. Basketball voting system. The award is voted on and presented annually to the state’s top senior player by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Minot Bishop Ryan’s Ben Bohl received 43 points and four first-place votes. Bismarck Century’s Treyton Mattern received 29 points and three first-place votes. Grafton’s Dalton Albrecht received 28 points and one first-place vote. West Fargo’s Luke Lennon received 10 points and 1 first-place vote, and Fargo Davies’ Braeton Motschenbacher received five points.
Walters, the North Dakota Gatorade Player of the Year and Class A state tournament MVP, posted per-game averages of 21.1 points, 11.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks during Jamestown’s historic 2018-19 season. The Blue Jays became just the fourth known Class A boys basketball program ever to claim an undefeated state championship, and first since Fargo North in 2002.
“He’s the most efficient basketball player I’ve had the privilege of coaching,” said Jamestown boys basketball coach Jacoby Lloyd of Walters. “It’s almost like having a sixth sense to go and get the basketball. Some of his advanced stats are just ridiculous.”
Walters averaged 67.8 percent from the field as a senior, but that number soared to 71 percent inside the 3-point arc. He tallied 5.7 second-chance points and 16.3 points in the paint per game. Walters’ career numbers read: 1,187 points, 612 rebounds and 62 blocks.
“One of the things with this team, I never had to call out anything for Mason to get his 20 (points) and 11 (rebounds) every night,” Lloyd said. “It’s validation for all the hard work he put in after the injury he suffered between his sophomore and junior year.”
Walters’ high-jumping mishap during the high school Al Cassell Relays in Jamestown resulted in same-day surgery on his left knee. He missed the 2017 AAU basketball season and summer camps, but Walters tossed himself into the rehabilitation process and didn’t miss a minute of time for the Blue Jays.
“It was tough. I had to do a lot every single day,” Walters said. “But I wasn’t taking anything for granted anymore.”
Between practicing jump shots the last two years, Walters attacked the weight room. The once lanky sophomore tipped the scale at 205 pounds this season, becoming a force in which Class A basketball had no answer for this winter.
“He transformed the way that he ate, the way that he lifted, the way he went about his business,” Lloyd said. “He’s just scratching the surface of what he possibly could become athletically.”
Walters won’t turn 18 until August 7. He’ll be joining a University of Jamestown men’s program that won 29 games and reached the NAIA D-II national tournament’s round of 16 in 2018-19.
“I’m excited. They had a really great season this year,” Walters said of his hometown Jimmies. “I’m just looking forward to getting into the gym, working out and getting bigger.”

The two people identified as mother Sharon Tarrant and sister Lauren Tarrant did not comment to the media after police searched their homes. They are reportedly in protective police custody.
Nine News said they returned to their homes for the first time Monday since at least 50 people were slaughtered in Christchurch last Friday.
The mother lives in the New South Wales town of Lawrence and the sister in Sandy Beach.
Australian police said the aim of the search was to obtain material that could help New Zealand police in their investigation of the attack.
New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said the Australian police searches “haven’t discovered any matters that would threaten their public.”
CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) — Aya Al-Umari never got the chance to say goodbye to her brother Hussein before he was killed in a mass shooting at Al Noor mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. But she wonders if he had a premonition.
The night before the attack, he was fixated on her new T-shirt. It said: “See You Bye.” She wonders now if his teasing comments about her top were his way of saying farewell.
He’d always delighted in teasing her. One time when they were visiting Malaysia as kids, he’d given her some candy that he assured her was smooth and sweet. When she put it in her mouth, she quickly realized he’d tricked her. It was popping candy, which instantly began to fizz and spark on her tongue. She shrieked. He laughed.
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Police in the central Dutch city of Utrecht say they are investigating a shooting in a tram that left “multiple” people injured and are considering the possibility of a “terrorist motive.”
Police, including heavily armed officers, flooded the area after the shooting that happened Monday morning on a tram at a busy traffic intersection.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the situation “very worrying” and the country’s counterterror coordinator said in a tweet that a crisis team was meeting to discuss the situation.
There have been no reports yet of any suspects arrested.
BOSTON (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren is embracing the role of underdog in the early months of the Democratic race for president.
Warren is facing tough questions about fundraising and electability, along with lingering skepticism about her past claim to Native American identity.
But the Massachusetts senator tells The Associated Press that it’s the race she wants to run and that her decision to skip high-dollar fundraising events is about meeting rank-and-file voters.
The 69-year-old Democrat remains in the middle of the pack in early polling. Her Boston-based senior advisers say she’ll focus on seizing opportunities to stake bold new policy positions, as she did recently by calling for the breakup of big technology companies. They say that allows her to shape the debate and showcase her policy bona fides.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An appeals court will consider the constitutionality of a struck-down Kansas statute that had required people to provide documents proving U.S. citizenship before they could register to vote.
A three-judge panel of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments Monday in Salt Lake City in a case with national implications for voting rights.
At issue is a legal challenge to a voter registration statute requiring people to provide documentary proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers. Kansas is appealing a ruling last year that found its law violated the constitutional right to vote.
The state faces an uphill battle to resurrect the law championed by former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who led President Donald Trump’s now-defunct voter fraud commission.
