FOREST CITY, IOWA –  (VCSU)  The Valley City State softball team rolled to two more wins on Saturday, allowing just two runs and eight total hits in a doubleheader sweep at Waldorf University.

The Vikings picked up the game one victory by a score of 5-1, and then completed the sweep with an 8-1 win in game two.

The Vikings won all four games in the road series at Waldorf, outscoring the Warriors 28-4 and collecting 47 total hits.

The No. 8-ranked Vikings improved to 38-3 overall and are closing in on the program record of 40 wins set during the 2016 season. VCSU is now 18-2 in conference play and leads the conference by two games over Bellevue University (35-6, 17-5 NSAA). Mayville State (21-10, 14-5 NSAA) is 3.5 games back of the Vikings.

Up next: Valley City State and Mayville State will play a mid-week conference series this week. VCSU goes to Mayville for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday, and then hosts the Comets for a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.

VCSU 5, Waldorf 1
Emily Smith pitched a complete game as she set a new school record with her 23rd win of the season in VCSU’s 5-1 victory.

Smith gave up just three hits and one run over her seven innings of work. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.

After Joelle Aiello and Smith singled in the top of the first, Riley Perryman had an RBI groundout and Marissa Hawkins had an RBI single to put the Vikings up 2-0 early. The Vikings made it 3-0 after Tatum Lundin doubled in the second inning, moved to third on Jayme Menard‘s single, and then scored when Menard was thrown out attempting to steal second base.

The Vikings added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings on RBI singles from Hawkins and Autumn Perry.

VCSU racked up 12 total hits in the game and did not commit an error. Lundin was 3-for-4 at the plate, while both Smith and Hawkins had two hits. Hawkins drove in a team-high two runs.

VCSU 8, Waldorf 1
The Vikings completed the weekend sweep with an 8-1 victory in Saturday’s finale, outhitting the Warriors 11-5.

Tatum Lundin blasted her second home run of the series, putting the Vikings up 3-1 on her two-run shot in the top of the second inning. VCSU added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and then broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Emilee Wilson picked up the win after going the first six innings, giving up just four hits and one unearned run. She walked only one and struck out seven. Nichole Reed pitched a scoreless seventh inning to finish off the victory.

Four different Vikings had two hits in the game. Marissa Hawkins was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Emily Smith had two hits and drove in a run, while Voni Culp and Riley Perryman each had two hits and scored a run.
