Jamestown (CSi) The week of April 29th has been designated, “Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week,” for the entire state of North Dakota. This annual event is intended to remind the public of the dangers associated with severe summer weather including: lightning, high winds, large hail, flash floods and tornadoes. All of which, can cause severe property damage, personal injury, and even death.
Stutsman County Emergency Manager, Jerry Bergquist says, as part of the awareness week activities, Stutsman County will conduct a tornado exercise that will begin at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 1st. The exercise will simulate what occurs locally when a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service.
The tornado exercise will be testing internal notification procedures county-wide along with siren activation capabilities. Sirens will be activated in many area communities including the Cities of Jamestown, Buchanan, Cleveland, Medina and Streeter. In most communities, sirens will be activated for approximately 3 minutes.
Because the National Weather Service will not directly be involved with the exercise, the simulated warning will not be broadcast through the National Weather Service all-hazards weather radio system. Also, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) for local AM/FM radio stations and cable television providers will not be activated. The Stutsman Alert’s notification system powered by Everbridge also will not be activated for this test.
However…the CSi Cable interrupt system WILL be tested at approximately the time of the Tornado Drill activated by the Jamestown Law Enforcement Center in Jamestown.
The most common reason a community’s warning sirens are activated is to warn the public of a possible tornado. However, sirens could also be activated to alert the public of other types of events that could be a danger to the community.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — The parents of a 1-month-old baby have been charged with child abuse after the boy died at a hotel in Williston.
Twenty-seven-year-old Tank McMillin and 18-year-old Hannah McMillin appeared in court Monday afternoon where a judge ordered that each be held on $1 million bond.
The parents were arrested after police were called to the Four Points Sheraton Friday on a report of a child not breathing. The baby was pronounced dead at a Williston hospital a short time later.
KFYR-TV reports court documents say the baby had bruising to his abdomen, back, sides, buttocks and feet. The documents say the parents told police they put a blanket or pillows on the baby’s face.
The Williams County State’s Attorney’s Office continues to review the case. Additional charges could be filed.
CASSELTON, N.D. (AP) — Fire has destroyed a large garage at a Casselton business.
The blaze at Gordy’s Service Center just off Interstate 94 was reported shortly before 5:30 a.m. Monday. Fire Chief Tim McLean says the multi-bay steel building was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
KFGO radio reports the flames could be seen for several miles.
Fire departments from Casselton, Mapleton, Buffalo and West Fargo responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was hurt in the fire, though a firefighter was taken to a Fargo hospital for treatment of minor injuries he suffered when he tripped and fell at the fire hall as he prepared to head to the scene.
The garage is separate from Gordy’s convenience store and fast food restaurant.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — One of two former Minot nurses accused of stealing drugs prescribed for hospice patients wants to change her plea.
A hearing for 40-year-old April Beckler, who now lives in Fargo, is scheduled for Wednesday. A trial has been scheduled for May 6.

Deputies responded to a report of a driver swerving from lane to lane on Interstate 94 early Saturday near Casselton. Speeds during a brief chase approached 100 miles an hour. The vehicle eventually left the interstate and landed in a ditch.
KFGO reports the male driver was taken to Sanford Hospital in Fargo, then to jail.
(AP) A western South Dakota sheriff is seeking to be dismissed from a lawsuit challenging new state laws that aim to prevent disruptive demonstrations by Keystone XL oil pipeline opponents.
Attorneys for Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom say he must enforce state laws but isn’t responsible for defending them. They also argue in a motion filed last week that the lawsuit is baseless.
The legislation pushed through by Republican Gov. Kristi Noem and GOP leaders allows officials to pursue money from demonstrators who engage in “riot boosting,” or encouraging violence during a riot.
Supporters hope to avoid a repeat of massive and costly protests in North Dakota against the Dakota Access pipeline.
The American Civil Liberties Union and American Indian tribes say the legislation stifles free speech. The ACLU is spearheading the lawsuit against state officials and Thom.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot State University is facing some challenges maintaining the air dome over its stadium as the facility wraps up its second season.
The Minot Daily News reports that operators are struggling with the winter upkeep of the nearly $2 million bubble.
Minot State Athletics Director Andy Carter says any substantial snowfall creates issues for the 86,000-square-foot (7,990-square-meter) bubble over Herb Parker Stadium. He says if the snow melts and hardens, it could tear the fabric and collapse the inflatable dome.
Carter says crews need to monitor the dome around the clock and clear snow from its base to ensure the bubble remains operational.
The university is also figuring out how to create a concession area or accommodate those who want to bring their dogs to the space.

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, representing the people at Emperor Akihito’s abdication ceremony, thanked the outgoing emperor for seeking peace and happiness for his people and for reaching out to them in times of difficulty.
Abe said the emperor always shared the people’s happiness and hardship.
Akihito’s reign runs through midnight Tuesday, when his son, Crown Prince Naruhito, becomes the new emperor.
Abe and his ultra-conservative supporters, who seek to expand Japan’s military role, have sometimes seemed irked by Akihito’s repeated reminders of Japan’s wartime past.
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s socialist party boss, Diosdado Cabello, has called on government supporters to amass at the presidential palace to defend Nicolas Maduro from what he says is a small uprising of traitorous military soldiers backed by the U.S.
His comments in a phone call to state TV came after opposition leader Juan Guaidó appeared in a video with a small contingent of heavily armed soldiers and formerly detained opposition activist Leopoldo Lopez calling for Venezuelans to take to the streets to oust Maduro.
Cabello downplayed the significance of the rebellion, saying Caracas is in calm and that the Carlota air base near where the rebellious soldiers are gathered had not been touched.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A German bank being sued by President Donald Trump in his attempt to block congressional subpoenas for his business records says it’s “committed to providing appropriate information.”
Deutsche (DOY’-chuh) Bank spokeswoman Kerrie McHugh said Tuesday in a statement, “We remain committed to providing appropriate information to all authorized investigations and will abide by a court order regarding such investigations.”
Trump is suing Deutsche Bank and Capital One. The lawsuit by Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric and his daughter Ivanka was filed Monday in federal court in New York.
Two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions this month as part of investigations into Trump’s finances.
The Trump lawsuit seeks to block the financial institutions from disclosing information and complying with the subpoenas.
Capital One hasn’t responded to a request for comment.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is proposing charging asylum-seekers a fee to process their applications as he continues to crack down on the surge of migrants crossing into the U.S.
In a presidential memorandum signed Monday, Trump is directing his attorney general and acting homeland security secretary to take additional measures to overhaul the asylum system, which he insists is “in crisis.”
He’s giving them 90 days to propose regulations so that, all asylum applications are adjudicated within 180 days, except for those representing exceptional circumstances.
Trump also wants to charge asylum-seekers to process their asylum and employment authorization applications. And he wants to bar anyone who has entered or tried to enter the country illegally from receiving authorization that allows them to work.
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams tells The Associated Press she will not run for a U.S. Senate seat in 2020 despite being heavily recruited by national party leaders.
Abrams’ is still considering running for president, though she said Tuesday she’s in no hurry to make that call as she continues her advocacy on voting rights and educating citizens ahead of the 2020 census.
Abrams’ decision not to run for the Senate deals a blow to Democrats’ already slim chances of retaking a Senate majority. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York tried for months to persuade Abrams to seek the seat.
The 45-year-old Abrams became a national political star during her unsuccessful bid to be the first black woman elected governor in U.S. history.
