BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum has appointed Erica Thunder as North Dakota’s new labor commissioner.

Burgum made the announcement Thursday. She replaces Michelle Kommer, who continues to head the state Department of Commerce.

The 29-year-old Thunder is a lawyer and currently serves as judicial systems administrator for the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission.

Thunder is a member of the Three Affiliated Tribes on the Fort Berthold Reservation, home to the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara.

She begins her new job on June 3 and will be paid $102,000 a year.
