Horace  (Farm Rescue) –  Last year, Farm Rescue began raising funds to purchase two John Deere 9620R four-wheel drive tractors to pull its seeding equipment in 2019 and beyond. The first tractor was acquired using grant monies awarded through the Engelstad Foundation. The second tractor purchase was made possible through contributions from many individuals and businesses. The fundraising effort recently came to fruition at John Deere’s Tractor Works facility in Waterloo, IA, as Farm Rescue staff and volunteers had the opportunity to see the new tractors completed.

More than 135 individual and family donors contributed to the tractor fundraiser, which offered supporters a chance to have their name displayed on the tractor with a gift of $250 or more.

In addition to the Engelstad Foundation, several other Farm Rescue business sponsors also increased their annual giving dollars to assist with the tractor purchases. Hess Corporation, CoBank, CHS, Glacial Lakes Energy, Oneok and First International Bank & Trust all contributed to the campaign’s success, helping fulfill a crucial need for the nonprofit’s assistance efforts.

Farm Rescue Founder and President, Bill Gross says, “We wish to thank everyone who supported the tractor fundraiser. The tractors are essential to our planting operations and will allow us to help hundreds of families.”

Farm Rescue, is a nonprofit organization that provides planting, haying, harvesting and livestock feeding assistance free of charge to farm and ranch families who have experienced a major illness, injury or natural disaster, has two new tractors to power its operations and a lot of people to thank for that fact.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A monthly survey of rural bankers in parts of 10 Plains and Western states shows they’re rapidly losing confidence in the region’s farm economy.

The Rural Mainstreet survey for May, released Thursday, shows the survey’s overall index dropping from 50 in April to 48.5 this month. Any score above 50 suggests a growing economy, while a score below 50 indicates a shrinking economy.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss, who oversees the survey, blames trade tensions and tariffs, saying they’re contributing to losses suffered by grain farmers — although livestock producers are faring better. Still, Goss says, bankers believe “the negatives far outweighed the positives.”

The survey’s confidence index, which gauges bankers’ expectations for the economy six months out, plummeted from 50 to 38.2 — its lowest level in almost two years.

Bankers from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming were surveyed.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The flurry of legal actions against the company that makes OxyContin is intensifying.

The Idaho Attorney General’s Office sent notices last week to Purdue Pharma and lawyers for the Sackler family, which owns the Connecticut-based drugmaker, that it intends to take legal action against them.

The letters were disclosed Thursday in response to a public records request made to the state by The Associated Press. They say Purdue had “ample opportunity” to reach a settlement.

The disclosure comes the same day that five other states announced lawsuits or administrative actions against the company, seeking to hold it accountable for an opioid crisis.

Now, all but three states have taken legal action against Purdue or indicated they plan to.

The company says states are using “stunningly overbroad legal theories” as they pursue the cases.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The niece of two Navy seamen from Minot who were killed in World War II says she’s excited that the recent identification of their remains will bring more attention to their story.

Helene Jensen is the niece of Calvin and Wilfred Palmer, who were crewmen on the battleship USS Oklahoma when they died in the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The brothers’ remains were identified in March through DNA analysis.

Jensen tells the Minot Daily News that her father was also aboard the USS Oklahoma, but he survived the attack and tried to save the Palmer brothers.

Jensen says she wants people to learn about the sacrifices they made for the country.

She says the family plans to bury their remains in August in Port Orchard, Washington.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri’s Republican-led House is expected to pass a bill to ban abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy and the state’s GOP governor is likely to sign it.

The GOP-led House is set to debate the sweeping abortion bill Friday in the final hours of the 2019 session.

The proposed ban allows exceptions only in medical emergencies, not cases of rape or incest.

The Missouri legislation comes after Alabama’s governor signed a bill Wednesday making performing an abortion a felony in nearly all cases.

Republican-led legislatures around the U.S. are imposing new restrictions, hoping more conservative justices will overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion.

Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia approved bans on abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can occur in about the sixth week of pregnancy.

The Warriors took a two-games-to-none lead in the Western Conference finals by turning a 15-point, halftime deficit into a 114-111 victory over the Blazers. Klay Thompson provided 13 of his 24 points while Golden State outscored Portland, 39-24 in the third quarter. But the Warriors didn’t take the lead for good until Kevon Looney’s dunk made it 112-111 in the final minute.

Stephen Curry reached the 30-point plateau for the fourth straight game, finishing with 37. Curry also had eight rebounds and eight assists, while Draymond Green chipped in 16 points, 10 boards and seven assists.

Portland scored just 46 points after building a 65-50 halftime lead.

Blazers guard Damian Lillard had a team-high 23 points but had a potential game-tying 3-pointer blocked by Andre Iguodala (ihg-ah-DAH’-lah).

CJ McCollum finished with 22 points for the Trail Blazers, who host Game 3 on Saturday.

PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Koepka has PGA Championship lead with record-breaking round

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) _ Brooks Koepka (KEHP’-kuh) managed to grab the spotlight from playing partner Tiger Woods while conquering notorious Bethpage Black this afternoon.

Koepka has a one-stroke lead over Danny Lee through one round of the PGA Championship. Koepka delivered a 7-under 63, making him the first player in 101 years of the PGA Championship to shoot that score twice. He broke the course record at Bethpage Black and became the first player to post 63 at a major in consecutive years.

Koepka is the defending champion and is seeking his fourth major championship.

Woods opened with a pair of double bogeys on the back nine and ruined a torrid start to the front nine with a pair of three-putt bogeys. He signed off on a 72 after carding even par or better in his previous 12 rounds in majors.

Lee birdied his last two holes for a 64. He made eight birdies in his round despite failing to get any on the par 5s.

Tommy Fleetwood is three shots back and one ahead of five others. Pat Perez, Chez Reavie and Luke List are at minus-2, as are Sung Kang and Mike Lorenzo-Vera.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he hopes the U.S. is not on a path to war with Iran amid fears that his two most hawkish advisers could be angling for such a conflict with the Islamic Republic.

Asked Thursday if the U.S. was going to war with Iran, the president replied, “I hope not” — a day after he repeated a desire for dialogue, tweeting, “I’m sure that Iran will want to talk soon.”

The tone contrasted with a series of moves by the U.S. and Iran that have sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East in recent days. For the past year, national security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have been the public face of the administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has ordered portions of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report to be unredacted and made public in the criminal case against former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan issued the limited order Thursday. Portions of the report relating to Flynn are redacted and would be made public under the order.

It is the first time a federal judge has ordered the Justice Department to make public portions of the report the agency had kept secret.

Mueller officially concluded his investigation in March. Attorney General William Barr released a redacted version of Mueller’s report in April.

Flynn is awaiting sentence after admitting to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan’s legislature has passed a law allowing same-sex marriage in a first for Asia.

The vote Friday allows same-sex couples full legal marriage rights, including in areas such as taxes, insurance and child custody.

Taiwan’s Constitutional Court in May 2017 said the constitution allows same-sex marriages and gave parliament two years to adjust laws accordingly.

Taiwan’s acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships began in the 1990s when leaders in today’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party championed the cause to help Taiwan stand out in Asia as an open society. Although claimed by China as its own territory, Taiwan is a self-governing democracy with a vibrant civil society.

LONDON (AP) — The German government says it still has a “great interest” in Britain reaching a domestic agreement on how to move forward on Brexit, after talks between government and opposition broke down.

Martina Fietz, a spokeswoman for Chancellor Angela Merkel, said Friday that she can’t comment specifically on the latest development. But she said that the German government’s interest in Britain agreeing how to organize the country’s exit from the European Union and get it through Parliament “is of course still there, and we are watching with interest what is happening in London.”

Britain was due to leave the EU on March 29, but the bloc has extended the Brexit deadline until Oct. 31.

German Foreign Ministry spokesman Rainer Breul said “we of course expect from the British side that they use this time frame and don’t face the same situation in October that we had a few weeks ago.”

But the pioneering men who broke the Marines’ color barrier in the 1940s now recall how they persevered and prevailed.

President Franklin Roosevelt’s 1941 executive order banned discrimination in government and defense industry employment because of “race, creed, color, or national origin.”

That gave men like John Thompson a chance to defend a country that denied them the rights they wanted to fight for. Thompson was trained at a segregated camp called Montford Point, adjacent to Camp Lejeune.

The 94-year-old Thompson says the Marine Corps was an elite group — and despite the hindrances, he wanted to belong to an elite group.

BEIJING (AP) — The legacy of American architect I.M. Pei stretches from west to east, from the Louvre museum to his native China, where he helped fuse tradition with modernity as the country opened up after the Cultural Revolution.

Pei died earlier this week at the age of 102. He added elegance to landscapes worldwide with powerful geometric shapes and grand spaces.

Born in southern China, he migrated to the United States and was one of the first overseas architects to visit China during its initial period of opening up. Tan Xin, who worked with him in the early 1980s, said he helped Chinese architects imagine how to modernize while retaining traditional elements.
