Jamestown  (CSi)  This year’s drag races at Jamestown Regional Airport planned for  July 13, 14, 2019 is in question.

Jamestown Regional Airport Authority Director, Katie Hemmer says, the Airport Authority has approved  drag racing event contingent on approval by the FAA, noting airport operations are not affected during the races, with another runway being used.

Jamestown Drag Racing President, Mike Trautman says, the Federal Aviation Administration, provides funds for the Jamestown Regional Airport and also regulates the airports operations.

Hemmer says the FAA denied drag racing at the airport’s runway, because it had spent about $2.2 million last year on upgrades to it.

The airport covers extra work stemming from the drag races by levying a fee.

JDRA has previous performed maintenance on the runway stemming from the drag races.

At the February Jamestown Tourism Grant/Executive Board meeting,  Jamestown Racing Association was approved for it’s full grant request of $6,000,  plus $3,900 towards purchasing seating.  Other funds to hold the event include local business sponsors in the amount of $12,950, Racer Entry Fees, $12, 155, Gate Admissions $9,625, T-Shirt Sales, $3,178.

The economic impact of the event is put at $187,500, and has been held at the Airport for 18 years and was hampered recently by rainy weather.

Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund told the Tourism Board, that “Jamestown Tourism has been supporting the Jamestown Drag Races since 2007. In the most recent years, we’ve awarded $6000 for advertising plus invested dollars into their infrastructure. This year we awarded $6000 plus $3900 towards purchasing seating.

It’s hard to express concern of an event in front of thoughtful and eager volunteers. With the recent resurfacing of the airport runway, the GrantExec Board spent some time discussing the likelihood that this might happen, however, the board chose to fund this event in the face of optimism.

I think it’s important for Tourism to continue to be the voice of support. We need to focus on the spirit of the volunteers and their passion. Growth comes from those who dare to dream and we are fortunate to have a group of people in Jamestown who dream big. It sounds like the group will continue to fight to host their event.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck nonprofits and thrift shops are facing a growing burden of having to cover the costs of hauling away items that were donated after operating hours, including moldy mattresses and rained-on furniture.

Several agencies have put up signage and installed security cameras, but they said it’s done little to deter the after-hours dumping, the Bismarck Tribune reported.

Mandan’s AID Inc. gets inundated with leftover goods that no one wanted to buy at garage sales, according to Patti Regan, the nonprofit’s executive director. She said landfill disposal fees range from $7 to $20 per item.

“People want a place to dump their garbage,” Regan said. “If you’re bringing in a moldy mattress that’s been laying in the garage for months that the dog’s been sleeping on . we don’t really need it. Don’t tell me the poor need it.”

The Ministry on the Margins, which operates a food and clothing pantry, recently had two couches dropped off after hours. The organization’s founder, Sister Kathleen Atkinson, said they don’t have the capacity to deal with furniture.

“I know some people are doing it out of charity and goodness, but they need to stop and think of the mission,” Atkinson said. “There are other places that take couches. Always respect the mission of the agency.”

Regan and Atkinson both stressed that they’re grateful for the community’s generosity.

“It’s hard out there,” Regan said. “There are a lot of people that are hungry, a lot of people in need.”

ATLANTA (AP) _ The Atlanta Braves have added veteran help for their patchwork bullpen by acquiring right-hander Anthony Swarzak from Seattle for left-hander Jesse Biddle and right-hander Arodys Vizcaino (viz-ky-EE’-noh). Seattle is sending Atlanta almost $1.8 million to cover about one-third of what’s remaining in Swarzak’s $8 million salary this year. Vizcaino had season-ending shoulder surgery last month. Biddle was designated for assignment by Atlanta last week.

MINNEAPOLIS   (Field Level Sports)  – Ryan Saunders is set to become head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, removing the interim tag that will make the 33-year-old the NBA’s youngest bench boss.

Saunders took over on Jan. 6 after owner Glen Taylor fired Tom Thibodeau.

President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas replaced Thibodeau in his front office job — Thibodeau was team president in addition to coaching duties — but Taylor said there was no mandate to retain Saunders.

Taylor said the union between Saunders, son of late coach and executive Flip Saunders, and the Wolves would move forward in some capacity. There was some sentiment Saunders would be on the bench even if another head coach was hired.

But with the endorsement of young stars Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, Rosas stuck with Ryan Saunders following a series of interviews last week.

The Wolves missed the playoffs and had a 17-25 record under Saunders last season.

In world and national news..

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran is urging U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to help launch a diplomatic dialogue to ease the current “alarming security situation” in the broader Persian Gulf region.

Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi said in a letter to the U.N. chief and the Security Council obtained Monday by The Associated Press that the United Nations must not remain indifferent “to addressing the root causes of the current state of affairs.”

He accused “certain circles from outside of this region” of provocative policies, and escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Ravanchi warned that “the eruption of any possible conflict will soon cross over from the regional level and will definitely have serious and extensive implications on international peace and security.”

The ambassador added that Iran “will never choose war,” but that “if war is imposed on us, Iran will vigorously exercise its inherent right to self-defense.”

HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. government says a 16-year-old teenager from Guatemala died Monday at a Border Patrol station in South Texas, becoming the fifth death of a migrant child since December.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that Border Patrol apprehended the teenager in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley on May 13. The agency says the teenager was found unresponsive this morning during a welfare check.

The agency did not say why the teenager had been detained for a week, but said he was “due for placement” in a facility for youth operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

A 2-year-old child died last week after he and his mother were detained by the Border Patrol.

BEIJING (AP) — Google is assuring users of Huawei smartphones the American company’s services still will work on them following U.S. government restrictions on doing business with the Chinese tech giant.

Google said Monday it is complying with and “reviewing the implications” of an order that requires export licenses for technology sales to Huawei Technologies Ltd.

Last week’s order follows U.S. government accusations that Huawei is a security risk and might help Beijing spy abroad.

Huawei, which uses Google’s Android operating system, is the No. 2 global smartphone brand by number of handsets sold, behind South Korea’s Samsung Electronics.

Google said on Twitter, “We assure you while we are complying with all US gov’t requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.”

DALLAS (AP) — A 23-year-old transgender woman seen on a widely circulated video being beaten in front of a crowd of people has been found dead in a Dallas shooting.

Police say the body of Muhlaysia Booker was found in a street Saturday and that no suspect has been identified. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say there’s no apparent link to the April 12 beating Booker suffered after she was involved in a minor traffic accident.

A cellphone recording showed her being beaten by a man as a crowd watched and authorities say the man was offered $200 to attack Booker. Video of the incident was shared on social media.

A 29-year-old man was arrested and jailed on suspicion of aggravated assault.

VIENNA (AP) — Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz says he expects the far-right Freedom Party to leave his government as it has threatened to do.

Kurz, who has asked Austria’s president to remove Interior Minister Herbert Kickl in the wake of a corruption scandal, told reporters in Vienna that vacant positions in government would be filled with civil servants and technocrats until the next elections, which are expected in a few months.

Kickl’s party was rocked by the publication of a video last week apparently showing its leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, offering a potential wealthy Russian benefactor government contracts in return for support.

Kurz’s center-right People’s Party entered into a coalition with the Freedom Party following 2017 parliamentary elections.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — A party that was part of a ruling coalition in Ukraine has criticized the newly sworn president’s decision to disband parliament and call snap elections.

Ukrainian television star Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he would disband the legislature immediately after being sworn in as president Monday, castigating the current lawmakers as people focused on self-enrichment.

The People’s Front party that was part of the ruling coalition and withdrew from it last week in a maneuver intended to make it more difficult for Zelenskiy to disband parliament, criticized Zelenskiy’s move as unlawful but said it was ready for early elections.

It charged that Zelenskiy hopes to ride the wave of his electoral success to control parliament.

Once Zelenskiy signs a decree disbanding parliament, a snap election will be held within two months.
