Jamestown  (CSi)  This year’s drag races at Jamestown Regional Airport planned for  July 13, 14, 2019 is in question.

Jamestown Regional Airport Authority Director, Katie Hemmer says, the Airport Authority has approved  drag racing event contingent on approval by the FAA, noting airport operations are not affected during the races, with another runway being used.

Jamestown Drag Racing President, Mike Trautman says, the Federal Aviation Administration, provides funds for the Jamestown Regional Airport and also regulates the airports operations.

Hemmer says the FAA denied drag racing at the airport’s runway, because it had spent about $2.2 million last year on upgrades to it.

The airport covers extra work stemming from the drag races by levying a fee.

JDRA has previous performed maintenance on the runway stemming from the drag races.

At the February Jamestown Tourism Grant/Executive Board meeting,  Jamestown Racing Association was approved for it’s full grant request of $6,000, plus $3,900 towards purchasing seating.

Other funds to hold the event include local business sponsors in the amount of $12,950, Racer Entry Fees, $12, 155, Gate Admissions $9,625, T-Shirt Sales, $3,178.

The economic impact of the event is put at $187,500, and has been held at the Airport for 18 years and was hampered recently by rainy weather.

Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund told the Tourism Board, that “Jamestown Tourism has been supporting the Jamestown Drag Races since 2007. In the most recent years, we’ve awarded $6000 for advertising plus invested dollars into their infrastructure. This year we awarded $6000 plus $3900 towards purchasing seating.

It’s hard to express concern of an event in front of thoughtful and eager volunteers. With the recent resurfacing of the airport runway, the GrantExec Board spent some time discussing the likelihood that this might happen, however, the board chose to fund this event in the face of optimism.

I think it’s important for Tourism to continue to be the voice of support. We need to focus on the spirit of the volunteers and their passion. Growth comes from those who dare to dream and we are fortunate to have a group of people in Jamestown who dream big. It sounds like the group will continue to fight to host their event.”

Jamestown  (CSi)  At Monday’s meeting, the Jamestown Public School learned that the District was awarded a $290,000 grant for its Safe Routes to School grant application.

In other business…

The school board approved a lease agreement with Otter Tail Power Co. to build a 104-panel solar energy array on Jamestown High School land facing 13th Street Northeast just behind Temple Baptist Church.

The meeting was recorded by CSi 10 The Replay Channel, with showings starting Tuesday.

Jamestown (CSi) the Jamestown Rural Fire District will be having a ground breaking ceremony at 11:00am on May 21, 2019.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Bismarck man has pleaded not guilty to a felony charge in a crash that injured a pedestrian.

Karson Demers entered the plea Monday to felony criminal vehicular injury. Chaylynn Arntz was injured when she was struck by Demers’ pickup truck March 22.

Bismarck Officer Tyler Mees testified Arntz was unresponsive and bleeding when she was taken to the hospital where she remained unconscious the following day. Arntz’s brother earlier told the Bismarck Tribune his sister suffered several broken bones, a collapsed lung and internal bleeding.

Police say Demers told investigators Arntz “had come out of nowhere” just before she was struck. A jury trial is scheduled Sept. 11.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The director of North Dakota’s lone abortion clinic says abortion-rights supporters are considering legal action over a state law that would require the clinic to read women a scripted notice that she calls not medically accepted.

The law is slated to go into effect Aug. 1. It would require the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo to tell women undergoing medication abortions that they can still have a live birth after the procedure if they change their minds. Clinic director Tami Kromenaker says the notion is based on “junk science” and puts them in a bad position.

State Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he will be required to defend the bill if a lawsuit is filed.

The other abortion bill, which prohibits doctors using certain instruments in a second-trimester procedure, is on hold awaiting court rulings.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Xcel Energy plans to retire its two remaining coal plants in the Upper Midwest by 2030, a decade earlier than scheduled.

The Minneapolis-based utility also announced plans Monday to expand wind and solar, use cleaner natural gas and operate its carbon-free nuclear plant in Monticello, Minnesota, until at least 2040.

Xcel reached agreement with environmental and labor groups on key parts of the company’s coal, solar and natural gas plans.

The utility plans to retire the Allen S. King coal power plant in Bayport, Minnesota, by 2028 and the Sherco 3 coal-fired generator in Becker, Minnesota, by 2030.

Xcel also plans to complete the company’s largest-ever wind expansion in 2022, adding 1,850 megawatts of wind.

The company will submit the plan to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission in July.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Police say a man was driving drunk when he crashed his pickup truck into a house in Minot, injuring himself and a passenger.

The crash happened Sunday about 1 a.m. Witnesses told police the pickup was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the road and struck the house, which was unoccupied at the time.

Both the 26-year-old driver and 20-year-old female passenger, from Watford City, were unconscious when first responders arrived. They were taken to Trinity Hospital. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence involving injury.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck nonprofits and thrift shops say too many people are making after-hours donations that are burdening agencies with the cost and hassle of hauling away items, such as moldy mattresses and rained-on furniture.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that several agencies have put up signage and installed security cameras, but they say it’s done little to deter the after-hours dumping.

Patti Regan is executive director of Mandan’s AID Inc. Regan says the nonprofit gets inundated with garage sale goods that no one wanted to buy. She says landfill disposal fees range from $7 to $20 per item.

Sister Kathleen Atkinson founded Ministry on the Margins, which operates a food and clothing pantry. She says the pantry recently had two couches dropped off after hours.

_ Miguel Sano’s two-run homer in the eighth inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Sano has homered twice in the past three games. Eddie Rosario singled with one out in the eighth before Sano hit Ty Buttrey’s fastball over the wall in right-center. It is the first home run Buttrey (2-2) has allowed in 38 relief appearances over two seasons. Taylor Rogers (1-0) allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings and Blake Parker got his eighth save.

TORONTO (AP) — David Price returned to the Boston Red Sox with another outstanding performance against Toronto Blue Jays.

The 33-year-old left-hander did not allow any earned runs over five innings in a 12-2 rout Monday that improved his record against the Blue Jays to 22-3, including 13-1 in 18 starts at Toronto.

Price had not pitched since May 2 due to left elbow tendinitis. He allowed three hits, struck out four and walked none.

Toronto scored twice in the second to tie the game after second baseman Michael Chavis allowed Billy McKinney’s two-hop grounder to bounce out of his glove for an error with one out. Richard Ureña grounded out and Luke Maile, who had been 0 for 7 against Price in his career, drove a fastball over the wall in left-center for his second homer this year.

_ Franmil Reyes hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to lift rookie Chris Paddack and the San Diego Padres to a 2-1 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres snapped a three-game losing streak that had dropped them one game below .500.

MLB-YANKEES-GREGORIUS

Yanks’ Gregorius plays for 1st time since Tommy John surgery

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius played five innings of defense and went 2 for 4 with a walk at extended spring training in his first game action since Tommy John surgery on Oct. 17.

Playing against Detroit Tigers minor leaguers and in front of Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, Gregorius singled twice and cleanly fielded three grounders Monday but had an error for an errant throw to first base.

Gregorius is coming back from surgery to a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He appears on track to start a minor league injury rehabilitation assignment in a week or two and rejoin the Yankees in late June.

In other MLB news:

_ The Atlanta Braves have added veteran help for their patchwork bullpen by acquiring right-hander Anthony Swarzak from Seattle for left-hander Jesse Biddle and right-hander Arodys Vizcaino (viz-ky-EE’-noh). MLB-RED SOX-YANKEES-LONDON

Yanks, Red Sox play on artificial turf London

NEW YORK (AP) _ The traditional rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox will take a radical twist when they meet in London next month: They will play on artificial turf for the first time in more than 2,200 games over a century. Major League Baseball has access to Olympic Stadium for 21 days before the games on June 29 and 30, the sport’s first regular-season contests in Europe, and just five days after to clear out. The league concluded there was not enough time to install real grass.

Starting June 6, gravel will be placed over the covering protecting West Ham’s grass soccer pitch and the running track that is a legacy from the 2012 Olympics. The artificial turf baseball field, similar to modern surfaces used by a few big league clubs, will be installed atop that.

New York pitcher CC Sabathia says because it is the first Yankees-Red Sox game out of the country, why not a lot of firsts?

Sharks dealing with key injuries heading into Game 6

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) _ The San Jose Sharks could be headed into their fifth elimination game of the postseason short-handed. The Sharks left town to play Game 6 of the Western Conference final at St. Louis tomorrow with questions about the status of captain Joe Pavelski, high-scoring forward Tomas Hertl and playmaking defenseman Erik Karlsson.

San Jose lost all three stars to injuries during a 5-0 loss at home to the Blues on Sunday that left them trailing the best-of-seven series 3-2 headed into Tuesday night’s game.

The Sharks have already staved off elimination four times this postseason, rallying from 3-1 down in a first-round series against Vegas and then winning a seventh game on home ice in the second round against Colorado.

Indianapolis adds Chad Kelly as 4th quarterback on roster

UNDATED (AP) _ The Indianapolis Colts have signed free agent quarterback Chad Kelly. He is the nephew of former Buffalo Bills star Jim Kelly, who was a teammate of Colts coach Frank Reich.

Chad Kelly was cut by the Denver Broncos in October after being arrested on a first-degree trespassing charge. He pleaded guilty in March to a second-degree misdemeanor. Kelly also was arrested in December 2014 after allegedly being involved in a fight outside a Buffalo night club.

Kelly will be the fourth quarterback on the depth chart behind Pro Bowler Andrew Luck, former starter Jacoby Brissett and Phillip Walker.

OHIO STATE-TEAM DOCTOR

Governor orders probe of medical board in Ohio State abuse

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Gov. Mike DeWine has called the late Ohio State University team doctor Richard Strauss a monster. DeWine ordered a review of the state medical board’s handling of his case decades ago and called for lawmakers to lift the statute of limitations on rape charges.

The Republican governor signed an executive order at a Statehouse news conference creating a group to review a complete, unredacted version of an investigative report released last week to see what the board knew about Strauss, who took his life in 2005, and when. Portions of the report involving the board’s actions had been blacked out.

The report conducted by a law firm and released by the school Friday found that Strauss sexually abused at least 177 male students from the 1970s to the 1990s.

KELLEN WINSLOW JR RAPE TRIAL

1st of 5 women to testify at ex-NFL player’s rape trial

VISTA, California (AP) — Prosecutors say they plan to call the first of five women to testify at the rape trial of former NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr., whose accusers include a 54-year-old hitchhiker and a 59-year-old homeless woman.

The first accuser is expected to take the stand today.

Winslow is accused of raping three women, including one who says she was attacked 15 years ago when she was 17. Two others say he exposed himself to them.

Defense lawyers told the jury the sex was consensual and asked them not to judge the married father’s “cheating ways.”

Winslow has pleaded not guilty to 12 counts. His father, Kellen Winslow, a Hall of Famer and former star player of the San Diego Chargers, sat behind him in court Monday.

OBIT-LAUDA

F1 great and aviation entrepreneur Niki Lauda dies at 70

BERLIN (AP) — Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda has died at age 70. Lauda won two of his titles after a horrific crash that left him with serious burns and went on to become a prominent figure in the aviation industry.

The Austria Press Agency quotes Lauda’s family as saying he “passed away peacefully” on Monday. Walter Klepetko, a doctor who performed a lung transplant on Lauda last year, says, “Niki Lauda has died. I have to confirm that.”

The Lauda family says, “His unique successes as a sportsman and entrepreneur are and remain unforgettable.” The family statement says, “His tireless drive, his straightforwardness and his courage remain an example and standard for us all. Away from the public gaze he was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. We will miss him very much.”

In 1976, Lauda was badly burned when he crashed during the German Grand Prix, but he made an astonishingly fast return to racing just six weeks later.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — With questions mounting over President Donald Trump’s tough talk on Iran, top national security officials are heading to Capitol Hill to brief Congress. But skeptical Democrats have asked for a second opinion.

The competing closed-door sessions Tuesday will be unusual and potentially polarizing. They come after weeks of escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf that have raised alarms over a possible military confrontation with Iran. Lawmakers are warning the Trump administration that it can’t take the country into war without approval from Congress.

Trump, veering between bombast and conciliation in his quest to contain Iran, threatened Monday to meet provocations by Iran with “great force.” But he also said he’s willing to negotiate.

“We’ll see what happens,” Trump told reporters Monday.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels say they launched a bomb-laden drone targeting an airport in Saudi Arabia that also has a military base inside of it.

The Houthi’s Al-Masirah satellite news channel said early Tuesday they targeted the airport in Najran with a Qasef-2K drone, striking an “arms depot” there.

A statement earlier Tuesday on the state-run Saudi Press Agency quoted Saudi-led coalition spokesman Col. Turki al-Maliki as saying the Houthis “had tried to target” a civilian site in Najran.

The New York Times last year reported that American intelligence analysts were based in Najran assisting the Saudis. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last week, the Houthis launched a coordinated drone attack on a Saudi oil pipeline amid heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s former fixer told Congress it was Trump’s personal attorney who suggested he tell lawmakers that the negotiations for Trump Tower Moscow ended months before they actually did.

The House intelligence committee on Monday released two transcripts of closed-door interviews with Michael Cohen. Its decision to release the hundreds of pages of transcripts came two weeks after Cohen reported to federal prison for a three-year sentence.

Cohen provided no direct proof that Jay Sekulow knew the end date of the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations was false, but he claims that Sekulow should’ve known because he had access to emails and other communications.

Sekulow’s attorneys say Cohen’s testimony isn’t credible.

HOUSTON (AP) — The U.S. government says a 16-year-old teenager from Guatemala died Monday at a Border Patrol station in South Texas, becoming the fifth death of a migrant child since December.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement that Border Patrol apprehended the teenager in South Texas’ Rio Grande Valley on May 13. The agency says the teenager was found unresponsive this morning during a welfare check.

The agency did not say why the teenager had been detained for a week, but said he was “due for placement” in a facility for youth operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

A 2-year-old child died last week after he and his mother were detained by the Border Patrol.

MONTOURSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump is claiming that former Vice President Joe Biden “deserted” Pennsylvania.

Trump and Biden have made Pennsylvania front and center in the efforts to win the presidency in 2020.

Biden kicked off his campaign in Harrisburg and located his campaign headquarters in Philadelphia. He was born in Scranton and served as a U.S. senator from Delaware.

Trump repeatedly went after Biden during a campaign rally Monday night in Montoursville.

“I guess he was born here, but he left you folks,” Trump claimed. “He left you for another state. Remember that please. I meant to say that.”

Biden has said that if the “American people want a president to add to our division, to lead with a clenched fist, closed hand and a hard heart,” they can vote for Trump.
