MAPLETON, N.D. (AP) — A man fleeing from law enforcement officers in Cass County jumped into the Sheyenne River to elude authorities.
Deputies responded to a call for a domestic incident near Mapleton Monday afternoon. KFGO says the 35-year-old man fled before deputies arrived and was spotted on his motorcycle by West Fargo police.
The man crashed his motorcycle near the river and tried to swim away from officers, but was arrested.
ROSS, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Highway Patrol says a head-on crash in Mountrail County has killed a California man.
The patrol says the 40-year-old Los Angeles man was a passenger in a Nissan SUV that was headed the wrong way on Highway 2 between Stanley and Ross shortly before 2 a.m. Monday. The passenger and the driver were thrown from the vehicle when it struck a Dodge SUV head on.
The driver of the Nissan and two people in the Dodge were injured.
MCVILLE, N.D. (AP) — An all-terrain vehicle operator has survived a head-on crash with a deer in North Dakota.
The Highway Patrol says 49-yer-old Troy Flesche, from Mapleton, was heading to his camper near McVille Saturday night when he hit the deer and lost control of his ATV, which overturned.
Flesche was flown to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Natural gas is being burned off and wasted at record levels in North Dakota because development of the pipelines and processing facilities needed to handle it has not kept pace.
Natural gas production hit a record in March. But about 20 percent of it went up in flames through “flaring,” the process of burning off the gas when it can’t be captured.
Critics say the state has not done enough to hold the energy industry’s feet to the fire. North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says the industry is working to curb flaring and has invested more than $18 billion in recent years.
About $4 billion in infrastructure is expected to come on line in the next two years, but regulators project that growing production will still lead to too much flaring.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A group raising awareness about post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide among combat veterans has finished a 400-mile walk in Fargo, North Dakota.
Brady’s Border2Border Ruck March began on the western border of North Dakota Tuesday and concluded Saturday. The event honors Brady Oberg, who served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. After coming home, Oberg suffered from PTSD and killed himself in 2015.
KFGO- AM reports that a group of 16 family and friends participated in the march. They each carried a bag with 20 pounds to represent the 20 veterans with PTSD who take their lives every day. The first march took place a year ago.
Oberg’s family started the Brady Oberg Legacy Foundation to raise awareness of PTSD. Oberg grew up in Ulen, Minnesota.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum’s office says nearly 70 people have applied to serve on a panel that’s seen as key to implementing a voter-approved constitutional amendment aimed at government ethics reform.
Those who submitted applications by Friday’s deadline include several former lawmakers, lobbyists, farmers, tribal members, a Boy Scout leader and a newspaper editor.
The Republican-led Legislature was successful in pushing its own bill aimed at ethics reform to meet the requirements of the constitutional amendment. But it wasn’t what Democrats and others who pushed for the ethics reform wanted.
The constitutional amendment still allows the new commission to write its own rules for ethics reform.
The governor, as well as Senate majority and minority leaders, must agree by consensus on who sits on the panel, which is expected to be chosen by July 1.

Video puts Caps star in unflattering situation
UNDATED The Washington Capitals say they have confirmed forward Evgeny Kuznetsov (kooz-NEHT’-sahv) is shown in a now-deleted video on social media that appears to show him in a hotel room with lines of white powder on a table in front of him.
The team issued a statement saying it is in the process of gathering facts and will have no further comment at this time.
The video posted on Twitter carried a message saying it was why Russia lost in the world hockey championship semifinals. It showed Kuznetsov talking to someone and lines of white powder and American dollar bills can be seen on the table. Kuznetsov does not touch anything on the table in the 22-second video.
In a statement to Russian news outlet Sport Express, Kuznetsov said the video is from 2018 in Las Vegas after the Capitals won the Stanley Cup. In that statement, Kuznetsov said he went to a friend’s hotel room, saw drugs and an “unknown women,” called a friend and left.

_ Sandy León crushed a three-run homer off Oliver Pérez in a six-run fifth that highlighted the Red Sox’s 12-5 thrashing of the Indians. Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz) and Xander Bogaerts (BOH’-gahrts) had RBI doubles in the fifth before Leon put Boston ahead, 9-6. Bradley furnished a pair of run-scoring doubles against the Indians, who have lost eight of nine.
_ The Marlins avoided a four-game sweep by rallying for two runs against the Nationals’ bullpen to earn a 3-2 triumph in Washington. Jose Ureña allowed two earned runs and four hits through the first seven innings to improve to 5-2 against the Nationals, including an earlier win this season. Max Scherzer hit a go-ahead single and went six innings before leaving with a 2-1 lead.
_ Cody Bellinger hit his 19th homer and threw out two runners from right field in the Dodgers’ 10th victory in 12 games, 9-5 over the Mets. Chris Taylor and pinch-hitter Kiké Hernández also went deep while Los Angeles scored six times in the sixth off New York’s bullpen. Clayton Kershaw is 5-0 after yielding 10 hits but just three runs over six innings.

_ Renato Núñez and Jonathan Villar (vee-AHR’) homered as the Orioles won for just the third time in 14 games, 5-3 versus the Tigers. Dan Straily allowed one run in four innings of relief to get the win. Detroit made several miscues in falling for the 12th time in 13 games.
_ Bryan Reynolds hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple while the Pirates scored four times in the eighth inning to take Game 1 of their day-night doubleheader with the Reds, 8-5. Starling Marte followed Reynolds’ liner with a shot to center for his sixth homer to put Pittsburgh up, 8-4. Josh Bell also went deep for the Pirates, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
_ The Reds took Game 2 as José Iglesias hit his first career grand slam off Mitch Keller in the right-hander’s major league debut, helping Cincinnati earn an 8-1 victory. The slam was part of a six-run first. Derek Dietrich and Yasiel Puig (YAH’-see-ul pweeg) added back-to-back homers in the seventh against Alex McRae.
_ The Rockies pulled out a 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Raimel Tapia’s RBI single in the bottom of the 11th. Colorado trailed 3-1 before Nolan Arenado’s two-run single off Archie Bradley with two out in the seventh.

MLB-OBIT-BUCKNER
Bill Buckner dies at 69
BOSTON (AP) _ Bill Buckner was among the finest hitters in his day, but he also committed one of the most memorable errors in World Series history.
Buckner’s family said in a statement that the former outfielder and first baseman died Monday at 69 following a long battle with dementia.
Buckner was a 1981 All-Star and a 1980 batting champion while with the Chicago Cubs. But he is better known as the first baseman who allowed Mookie Wilson’s slow roller to go underneath his glove to end Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, allowing the Mets to beat the Red Sox before capturing the Fall Classic in seven games. The Red Sox were seeking their first World Series title in 68 years, a drought that would last another 18 years before Boston swept St. Louis in 2004.
Buckner amassed 2,715 hits and recorded a .289 batting average in a 22-year career that included stops with the Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Angels and Royals.

Pedroia put on 60-day IL, future in doubt
UNDATED (AP) _ Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia (peh-DROY’-ah) will take an “indefinite leave” in his long struggle to recover from knee trouble, putting in doubt whether he’ll ever play again in the majors. TENNIS-FRENCH OPEN
Williams advances after slow start
PARIS (AP) _ Serena Williams hasn’t played much since the Australian Open, and it took her a while to find her game in the first round of the French Open.
The 10th-seeded Williams dropped her opener set before rolling to a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over 83rd-ranked Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia. Williams had completed only three matches since competing at Melbourne four months ago, and she cited a bothersome left knee when pulling out of her past two tournaments.
Other winners on the women’s side were fourth seed Kiki Bertens and eighth seed Ashleigh Barty, along with Americans Sofia Kenin, Danielle Rose Collins, Jennifer Brady, Lauren Davis and Shelby Rogers.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova (kuh-VIH’-toh-vah) pulled out of the tournament ahead of her first-round match because of an injured left forearm.
Over on the men’s side, top seed Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) and 11-time French Open champ Rafael Nadal have moved into Round 2 with straight-sets victories. They are joined by fourth seed Dominic Thiem (teem) and No. 13 Borna Coric (KOHR’-ihch).
Daniil Medvedev was the highest men’s seed to fall on Monday, blowing a two-sets-to-none lead against Pierre-Hugues Herbert (ay-BEHR’).

In world and national news…
DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Emergency crews are going door-to-door checking homes in Indiana after damaging storms spawned apparent tornadoes in the state and in Ohio.
Madison County Emergency Management spokesman Todd Harmeson says least 75 homes were damaged in Pendleton and the nearby community of Huntsville. No serious injuries were reported in the area or other parts of the state where possible tornadoes hit Monday night.
Madison County authorities say roads in Pendleton, about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northeast of Indianapolis, are blocked with trees, downed power lines and utility poles. Pendleton High School is open as a shelter.
The National Weather Service says a survey team will investigate damage in Madison County and possibly in Henry County. Another team may survey damage in Tippecanoe County.
KAWASAKI, Japan (AP) — Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has described a fatal stabbing spree near Tokyo as harrowing, adding that he is outraged and will take all necessary measures for children’s safety.
Authorities say a man carrying a knife in each hand attacked schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop in Kawasaki, just outside Tokyo on Tuesday, wounding 16 people and leaving three dead, including himself. Most of the injured were schoolgirls at a Catholic school.
Abe said: “It was an extremely harrowing incident in which many small children were victimized, and I feel strong resentment… I will take all possible measures to protect the safety of children.”
The attack occurred as Abe hosted U.S. President Donald Trump.
TOKYO (AP) — President Donald Trump is on his way back to the United States after a four-day visit to Japan.
Trump and first lady Melania Trump said goodbye to Japanese officials on a rain-slicked tarmac in Tokyo.
During his stay, he met Japan’s new emperor and held serious discussions with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (shin-zoh AH’-bay) about North Korea, Iran and trade. He and Abe also played golf and attended a sumo wrestling match.
On Tuesday, Trump and first lady Melania Trump went aboard a Japanese destroyer to visit Japanese troops and then made a visit to the USS Wasp docked at the mouth of Tokyo Bay. Aboard the USS Wasp, Trump gave a Memorial Day speech to hundreds of members of the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet.
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s influential Revolutionary Guard says it doesn’t fear a possible war with the United State and claims that America hasn’t grown in power.
The remarks by the Guard spokesman, Gen. Ramazan Sharif, come as tensions between Washington and Tehran soared recently over America deploying an aircraft carrier and B-52 bombers to the Persian Gulf over a still-unexplained threat it perceives from Tehran.
The U.S. also plans to send 900 additional troops to the 600 already in the Mideast and extending their stay.
Sharif told reporters on Tuesday that the paramilitary force doesn’t “support engaging in any war” while at the same time it doesn’t “fear the occurrence of a war.”
Gen Sharif says “the enemy is not more powerful than before.”
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Kosovo’s president has rejected as “populist” Serbia’s warnings about putting troops on alert in reaction to an armed police operation in a Serb-populated area in Kosovo.
Hashim Thaci said that the Kosovo police operation early Tuesday in Mitrovica, in northern Kosovo, was fully legal and “directed against no community.”
Thaci said that those arrested included “Albanians, Serbs, Bosnians and also a Russian who was camouflaged under a diplomatic veil to hamper the police operation.”
He called for Belgrade’s support “because organized crime is not local but regional.”
Serbia regarded the operation as a threat to peace. It said Serbian troops have been ordered to be on alert and would act if tensions escalate.
