Bismarck ( NDDEQ) The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality is advising individuals with respiratory conditions or other health problems to limit outdoor activities.
Smoky conditions from wildfires in northern Canada, in addition to some local agricultural burning, are causing air quality problems.
The news release says, “Extremely small particles of ash and soot, or particulate matter, have been increasing over the last few hours (Wednesday afternoon) across eastern North Dakota. Particulate matter can irritate the respiratory system, especially for those who suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or conditions such as asthma and allergies.”
The high particulate numbers, plus higher temperatures, could extend for the next few days.
“At this time, most of the smoke impact seems to be concentrated in the eastern part of the state.”
Jamestown (NDHP) – The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, a rollover crash Wednesday evening about 7:20-p.m., on I-94 near mile marker 271, 11 miles east of Jamestown, killed a 66 year old man.
State Radio received a call of a reckless driver in a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pickup traveling west on I-94.
Several Law Enforcement units responded, the vehicle left the roadway and entered the median before veering back onto the westbound lanes of travel. The pickup spun out of control and rolled several times coming to rest on its wheels blocking the right lane of I-94. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The Highway Patrol report says alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The right westbound lane of I-94 was closed for about 2 hours while the crash was under investigation.
Assisting at the scene were, Stutsman County Sheriff’s Office, Barnes County Sheriff’s Office, Jamestown Area Ambulance Service, and the Jamestown Rural Fire Department.
The identity of the driver is being held until family notifications have been made.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies who stopped a Montana man at a New Salem gas station say they found methamphetamine and guns, among other things.
A court affidavit says Morton County deputies found 50 grams of meth, marijuana, an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, a rifle, a pistol and 150 rounds of ammunition in the vehicle Saturday. Two skull masks, a machete, brass knuckles and cash were also seized.
The Bismarck Tribune says the 28-year-old driver is facing two felonies and six misdemeanors, including possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He’s being held in the Burleigh-Morton County jail in Bismarck.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota will continue to employ railroad safety inspectors to monitor crude oil shipments for at least two more years.
The state-run rail safety pilot program that supplements federal oversight of oil train traffic began four years ago but was set to expire in July.
Gov. Doug Burgum signed legislation this month that extends the program through 2021.
Republican Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner says he believes the program will eventually become permanent.
The program includes two rail safety inspectors to supplement inspections by the Federal Railroad Administration.
The idea had been a campaign platform for Republican Public Service Commissioner Julie Fedorchak.
Since the program’s inception in 2015, Fedorchak says state inspectors have found about 6,000 “defects” on tracks and railroad rolling stock, resulting in more than 90 violations.

UNDATED (AP) _ Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant homered to support Kyle Hendricks’ eight innings of work in the Cubs’ 2-1 win at Houston. Hendricks allowed four hits and one run with seven strikeouts for his fourth straight win. Albert Almora Jr. was visibly upset when he fouled off a ball that hit a young girl in the standings, although a photo taken by The Associated Press appeared to show her conscious and crying as she was quickly whisked away.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have added another game to their hefty lead in the National League West by turning a five-run deficit into a 9-8 win over the New York Mets.
The Dodgers scored four times without making an out against Edwin Diaz in the bottom of the ninth to win the rubber match of the series. Joc Pederson and Max Muncy greeted Diaz by belting home runs, and Cody Bellinger tied it with an RBI double before Alex Verdugo’s sacrifice fly capped the comeback.
Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith homered in the seventh to put the Mets ahead, 8-3 before their bullpen collapsed. New York also wasted a pair of two-run blasts by rookie Pete Alonso.
The Dodgers own the best record in the NL at 37-19, putting them eight games ahead of second-place San Diego.

_ James Paxton returned to the mound and the Yankees banged out four home runs in a 7-0 shutout of the Padres. Paxton worked the first four innings in his first start since missing nearly a month because of inflammation in his left knee. DJ LeMahieu (leh-MAY’-hyoo), Luke Voit, Gio Urshela (ur-SHEH’-luh) and Gleyber (GLAY-bur) Torres went deep for the Yankees, who tagged Chris Paddack for three homers and four runs over five innings.
_ Willy Adames (ah-DAH’-mehs) ended the Rays’ 4-3 win over the Blue Jays with an RBI single in the bottom of the 11th. Garcia and Tommy Pham each had three of Tampa Bay’s 14 hits. The Blue Jays had four hits off Blake Snell’s first 10 pitches of the game, including a two-run homer by Lourdes Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) Jr.
_ Carlos Santana homered and hit Cleveland’s first triple of the season while collecting five RBIs in a 14-9 slugfest win over the Red Sox. Greg Allen hit a pair of triples and drove in two as Cleveland matched its season high for runs. Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Andrew Benintendi and Xander Bogaerts homered for Boston.
_ The Athletics suffered their second straight loss since a double-digit winning streak by allowing five runs in the eleventh inning of a 12-7 setback against the Angels. Cesar Puello (PWAY’-oh) was hit by a pitch leading off the 11th and scored the tiebreaking run on a throwing error by first baseman Matt Olson. Puello also slammed a two-run homer and was 3-for-4 with four RBIs.
_ Nomar Mazara and Asdrubal (as-DROO’-bul) Cabrera hit back-to-back doubles in the ninth to send the Rangers past the Mariners, 8-7. The Mariners led 7-5 until Shin-Soo Choo hit a two-run single in the eighth. Texas also capitalized on three errors and a wild pitch by Seattle relievers in the sixth inning.
_ Tim Anderson doubled in the go-ahead run in the eighth to give the White Sox an 8-7 victory over the Royals. The double came six innings after Anderson was beaned by Glenn Sparkman, leading to the ejection of the Kansas City starter. José Abreu hit a three-run homer and Yoán Moncada also connected as the White Sox swept a three-game series for the first time this season.
_ The Tigers earned a 4-2 win over the Orioles in Baltimore on Brandon Dixon’s tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth. John Hicks knotted the score with a solo blast in the eighth before Detroit took the rubber match of the three-game set. Keon Broxton connected in the Birds’ 13th loss in 16 games.
_ Bryce Harper homered, hit his 200th career double and drove in four before fouling a ball off his foot and exiting in the fifth inning of the Phillies 11-4 drubbing of the Cardinals. Harper drove a two-run homer to left-center in the third and followed an inning later with a two-run hustle double. Scott Kingery and Maikel (MY’-kehl) Franco hit back-to-back homers in the fifth, and Andrew McCutchen hit a two-run shot two batters later to blow the game open.
_ Anibal Sanchez finally picked up his first win as a National by tossing one-hit ball over six shutout innings of a 14-4 thrashing of the Braves. Howie Kendrick hit a three-run double for the Nats, who also got home runs from Juan Soto and Matt Adams. Washington withstood a grand slam by rookie Austin Riley and completed a two-game sweep of Atlanta.
_ Jeff Hoffman worked five innings and beat out an infield single to drive in a key run as the Rockies beat the Diamondbacks, 5-4. Brendan Rodgers had a two-run single and Trevor Story added three hits in Colorado’s season-high fourth straight win. Carson Kelly homered and singled to drive in two runs for Arizona.
_ Josh Bell is hitting .345 this season after going 3-for-5 with a three-run blast in the Pirates’ 7-2 rout of the Reds in Cincinnati. Bell tied the Pirates record with his 12th homer in May, and his 23rd extra-base hit of the month leaves him one shy of Hall of Famer Paul Waner’s (WAY’-nurz) club mark. Colin Moran also had a three-run shot off Anthony DeSclafani, who has given up seven homers in his last three starts.
_ The Marlins dealt the Giants their seventh consecutive loss as Jorge Alfaro had a career-high four hits in Miami’s 4-2 victory. Neil Walker had a tiebreaking, pinch-hit double in the seventh to help the Marlins win for the ninth time in 12 games. Nick Anderson got the win after starter Pablo Lopez allowed four hits and one run in six innings.

Correa out for 4-6 weeks with fractured rib
UNDATED (AP) _ Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has a fractured rib that will keep him out 4-6 weeks.
It is unclear when or how Correa was injured. He played on Sunday, then reported soreness around his ribs on Tuesday morning and was kept out of the lineup.
The 2015 American League Rookie of the Year is batting .295 this season with 11 homers and 35 RBIs.

_ Phillies outfielder Odubel (oh-DOO’-bul) Herrera left “hand print markings” on his girlfriend’s neck during a domestic assault inside an Atlantic City casino. That’s according to a police report obtained by The Philadelphia Inquirer, which also states that Herrera also left “small scratches” on her arms. He was arrested at the Golden Nugget casino Monday night and played on administrative leave by Major League Baseball while the case is investigated.
_ The Nationals have signed lefty Jonny Venters to a minor league deal and assigned him to Double-A Harrisburg. Venters was released by the Atlanta Braves on May 18 after recording a 17.36 ERA in 4 2/3 innings over nine appearances this year.
_ MLB has announced that Atlanta will host the 2021 All-Star Game. This will be the third All-Star Game in Atlanta, following the 1972 contest at Fulton County Stadium and the 2000 Midsummer Classic at Turner Field.

Nadal, Federer, Stephens advance
PARIS (AP) _ Second seed Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’) and No. 3 Roger Federer have advanced to the third round of the French Open by knocking off a pair of German challengers in straight sets.
Nadal dropped just seven games in defeating Yannick Maden, and Federer was a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 winner against Oscar Otte.
Other Wednesday winners on the men’s side include sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 7 Kei Nishikori (kay nee-shee-KOHR’-ee). No. 11 Marin Cilic (CHEE’-lihch) was the highest seed to lose Wednesday, falling to Grigor Dimitrov in five sets.
Women’s second seed Karolina Pliskova (PLIHSH’-koh-vah) and No. 7 Sloane Stephens advanced to the third round, but fourth seed Kiki Bertens had to retire due to illness four games into her match with Viktoria Kuzmova.

Raptors’ Anunoby (appendectomy) hopes to return for finals
TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Raptors reserve OG Anunoby (an-oo-NOH’-bee) hopes to return during the NBA Finals after missing almost seven weeks because of an emergency appendectomy.
Anunoby had surgery April 11, two days before the Raptors opened the first round of the playoffs against Orlando.
The second-year forward played in 67 games this season, averaging 7.0 points and 2.9 rebounds.

Bolden stays in draft, but DeLaurier remains at Duke
UNDATED (AP) _ Duke center Marques Bolden is remaining in the NBA draft, while Javin DeLaurier will return to the Blue Devils for his senior season.
Other college basketball players returning for another season are Gonzaga forward Killian Tillie, Florida point guard Andrew Nembhard, Maryland guard Anthony Cowan Jr. and Siena point guard Jalen Pickett.
Kansas freshmen Devon Dotson and Quentin Grimes also withdrew their names from the draft, but Minnesota scoring leader Amir Coffey will skip his senior season and turn pro.
COLLEGE PLAYERS-AGENT RULE
NCAA lower divisions to evaluate new agent rule
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The NCAA has says Division II and Division III schools will evaluate the new rule that allows college basketball players to sign with agents but maintain college eligibility while declaring for the NBA draft.
The rule currently only applies to Division I players.
Confusion over the rule has led to uncertainty for Glenville State’s Phil Bledsoe, a Division II player who signed with an agent but withdrew from the draft ahead of Wednesday night’s deadline to withdraw and preserve college eligibility.
TRACK AND FIELD-SEMENYA APPEAL
Caster Semenya appeals against testosterone ruling
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Caster Semenya has appealed the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to uphold testosterone regulations for some female athletes in track and field.
The two-time Olympic 800-meter champion’s lawyers say she has lodged an appeal with the Swiss Federal Tribunal, Switzerland’s supreme court.
Under the IAAF’s new rules, upheld by the Switzerland-based CAS this month, Semenya is not allowed to run in international races from 400 meters to one mile unless she medically lowers her natural testosterone levels.

Chelsea handles Arsenal for Europa crown
BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) _ Eden Hazard (hah-ZAHRD’) scored twice against his former teammate while Chelsea dominated the second half of a 4-1 rout of Arsenal to win the Europa League final.
Chelsea scored four times in the space of 23 minutes in a London derby played far from home. After a scoreless first half, Chelsea took control in the 49th minute when Olivier Giroud (oh-LIH’-vee-ay juh-ROO’) sent a diving header into the net.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) — Special counsel Robert Mueller’s first public comments on the Russia probe report have renewed the heated back-and-forth over what the investigation found and didn’t find.
In his remarks Wednesday, Mueller said federal rules prevented him from charging President Donald Trump with a crime, but he noted that he didn’t exonerate the president.
Trump responded by claiming there was insufficient evidence and suggested that he was therefore innocent. He declared, “The case is closed!”
The chairman of the House committee that would undertake any impeachment effort, New York’s Jerrold Nadler, says it falls to Congress to respond to what he contends are crimes, lies and other wrongdoing by Trump.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says “nothing is off the table” and that congressional committees should investigate whether Trump obstructed the investigation.
ATLANTA (AP) — New state abortion laws likely to become bogged down in legal challenges face another potential obstacle from prosecutors who refuse to enforce them.
The Associated Press reached out to nearly two dozen district attorneys across seven states, and several said they would not file criminal charges against doctors who violate the laws.
The four district attorneys who said they would not enforce the laws at all cited the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide, saying their states’ abortion laws clearly conflict with that decision. The new laws, which are not yet in effect, take aim at Roe in hopes that a new conservative majority on the court will overturn it.
Other prosecutors were critical of decisions not to enforce the law.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel faces an unprecedented snap election campaign — the second this year — after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a governing coalition and dissolved parliament instead.
Israel’s newly elected Knesset dissolved itself early on Thursday and set a new election date for Sept. 17.
It’s a shocking setback from Netanyahu, who had appeared to secure a comfortable win in last month’s election. But he was unable to build a parliamentary majority to rule because a traditional ally, Avigdor Lieberman, refused to bring his Yisrael Beiteinu faction into the coalition.
Netanyahu, who has led Israel for the past decade, now faces another challenge to his lengthy rule. It comes as he prepares for a pre-indictment hearing before expected criminal charges against him in a series of corruption cases.
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — South Korea is sending its own rescue workers to Hungary to support rescue efforts following a deadly boat accident in Budapest involving 33 South Koreans.
The team including 25 members from the country’s national fire agency, navy and coast guard were on their way Thursday.
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said the team includes rescue workers who had been involved in the rescue operations for a 2014 ferry disaster that killed more than 300 people in South Korea — one of the country’s biggest maritime accidents.
Meanwhile, South Korean President Moon Jae-in has called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to discuss rescue operations. Seven people are confirmed dead, 21 others are missing and seven have been rescued so far.
Seoul’s presidential Blue House said Thursday that Moon thanked Orban over the Hungarian government’s rescue efforts, and requested further support for efforts to find the missing, treat the survivors and recover bodies.
The Blue House says Orban told Moon that more than 200 divers and medical staff are involved in the rescue efforts and that officials are planning to locate and hoist the ship.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic presidential contenders are in a feverish battle to one-up each other with ever-more-ambitious plans to beat back global warming, curb gun violence and offer universal health care coverage.
But largely left out of the policy parade: immigration.
The 20-plus-candidate field is united in condemning President Donald Trump’s support for hard-line immigration tactics. They’ve particularly bashed his push to wall off the U.S. border with Mexico and roll back asylum rights.
But only two contenders, ex-Obama Housing Secretary Julián Castro and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke, have released detailed, written policies addressing the future of the immigration system.
Trump has continued to view the issue as a winner heading into 2020 and may have a clear path on it if Democratic presidential hopefuls don’t eventually go deeper.
CHICAGO (AP) — A computer algorithm has helped reopen dozens of Chicago cold cases by finding similarities in the slayings of more than 50 women.
The victims were mostly black women who were strangled or suffocated since 2001. The Murder Accountability Project ran thousands of homicides through a computer. It returned a collection of strikingly similar cases.
Now detectives are reviewing old evidence and looking for new clues. The renewed investigation offers hope to the victims’ relatives.
The bodies were found in some of Chicago’s most derelict places: alleys, abandoned buildings, weed-choked lots and garbage containers. Authorities believed many of the dead were prostitutes or drug addicts or both. There was evidence of sexual attacks, and some of victims were naked or wearing torn clothes.
