Jamestown (Forum News Service) — The North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown is working to come into compliance with accreditation standards after a survey documented multiple deficiencies, including suicide prevention measures, maintaining a safe environment for patients and proper use of restraints or seclusion.
A survey team for The Joint Commission, the accrediting body for hospitals, in March found multiple serious deficiencies that resulted in a determination of preliminary denial of accreditation for the state hospital’s inpatient service.
Since then, the hospital has been working with reviewers to resolve problems and bring the hospital back into compliance, according to Rosalie Etherington, the state hospital’s superintendent.
Many of the deficiencies have been addressed, she said, and Etherington expects the remaining problems will be fully resolved by September. “They have almost all been solved.”
She adds, most of the deficiencies stemmed from new standards that recently took effect involving suicide prevention measures for an area of the hospital called “intensive care,” which serves a small number of patients who pose a risk to themselves or others.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Theft charges have been filed against a Morton County man accused of stealing cattle.
KXMB-TV says there have been multiple reports of missing cattle in the Brien and Solen areas in the past three years. And, now investigators believe they’ve found the man responsible, tracing 22 stolen animals to Steven Weinberger, of Brien.
He has been charged with seven felony counts of theft of property. Authorities say the stolen cattle were sold independently to other ranchers who eventually sold their cattle at livestock barns.
Weinberger’s preliminary hearing is set for July 1.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The state Board of Higher Education is deciding how much weight to give a critical audit report of the North Dakota State College of Science.
The audit focused on management of the school’s career workforce program. Board member Kathleen Neset said during Thursday’s meeting that she is particularly troubled by accusations of conflict of interest involving college vice president Tony Grindberg and a Fargo marketing firm, as well as a lack of cooperation during the investigation.
Board chairman Don Morton questioned the accuracy of the report, especially allegations the school hid emails from investigators. Morton said the requests were not specific.
The board ordered Chancellor Mark Haggerott to draft a plan for temporary system oversight at the school, but took no formal action on the audit.
STANLEY, N.D. (AP) — A Fargo man has pleaded guilty to murdering his girlfriend’s 6-month-old son in Stanley.
Cody Faltersack entered his plea Thursday in Mountrail County court.
Authorities alleged Faltersack was alone with the child last November when emergency crews responded to a report of an unresponsive child. The boy later died at a Minot hospital of brain trauma.
A manslaughter charge against Faltersack earlier was upgraded to murder.
Faltersack faces life in prison. KXMC-TV reports sentencing is scheduled for August.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The dean of the University of North Dakota medical school has been named interim president at the Grand Forks school.
The state Board of Higher Education on Thursday named Joshua Wynne to fill the position created by Mark Kennedy’s departure to the University of Colorado. Wynne, who has been at UND since 2004, took over as med school dean in 2010. He will maintain those duties.
Wynne was one of two finalists. The other finalist, longtime business school dean Dennis Elbert, agreed to serve as co-chair of the search committee for the next president. Board member Dr. Casey Ryan, of Grand Forks, will join Elbert as co-chair.
Board members say they want to see the news president named as soon as possible, partly to keep search costs down.
NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — Sheriff’s deputies who stopped a Montana man at a New Salem gas station say they found methamphetamine and guns, among other things.
A court affidavit says Morton County deputies found 50 grams of meth, marijuana, an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, a rifle, a pistol and 150 rounds of ammunition in the vehicle Saturday. Two skull masks, a machete, brass knuckles and cash were also seized.
The Bismarck Tribune says the 28-year-old driver is facing two felonies and six misdemeanors, including possessing a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He’s being held in the Burleigh-Morton County jail in Bismarck.

Ex-Jaguars LB pointed gun, threatened to kill woman
UNDATED (AP) _ Former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Blair Brown pointed a gun at a woman and threatened to kill her, according to the Jacksonville’s Sheriff’s Office.
The incident report released Thursday says Brown also was accused of pushing the woman to the ground, kicking her in the abdomen and punching her in the face after a verbal altercation April 28.
Names of the woman and a witness were redacted on the incident report, but Brown’s agent said the woman was the player’s wife.
The Jaguars parted ways with Brown on May 9 — 11 days after the alleged incident.
In other NFL news:
_ After staunchly defending Odell Beckham Jr.’s decision to skip nearly all of the Browns’ voluntary practices since joining the team, head coach Freddie Kitchens said Thursday that the wide receiver has missed a lot while staying away the past three weeks. Other than being at his introductory news conference on April 1 or his appearance two weeks ago at one of the 10 practice sessions, the 26-year-old Beckham has not been around.

OHIO STATE-TEAM DOCTOR
Board to rebuke Ohio State doctor by undoing emeritus status
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State University’s full Board of Trustees is set to vote today on revoking the emeritus status of a team doctor found to have sexually abused young men throughout his two decades there.
Provost Bruce McPheron says the now-deceased doctor, Richard Strauss, would be the first person ever stripped of that honorary status by Ohio State. McPheron says the move would correct the record on Strauss.
A law firm investigating the allegations recently concluded that Strauss sexually abused at least 177 male students between 1979 and 1997. It also found that school officials back then heard concerns but did little to stop him.
University President Michael Drake says Ohio State is continuing to review the findings and take appropriate action.
Strauss retired in 1998. No one has publicly defended him.
In world and national news..
WASHINGTON (AP) — It was a surprise announcement that could derail a major trade deal. President Donald Trump has announced that he is placing a 5% tariff on all Mexican imports, effective June 10, to pressure the country to do more to crack down on the surge of Central American migrants trying to cross the U.S. border.
He said the percentage will gradually increase — up to 25% — “until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied.”
The decision showed the administration going to new lengths, and looking for new levers, to pressure Mexico to take action — even if those risk upending other policy priorities, like the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trade deal that is the cornerstone of Trump’s legislative agenda and seen as beneficial to his reelection effort.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expressing his displeasure with special counsel Robert Mueller’s motives after Mueller blunt dismissal of Trump’s repeated claims that the Russia investigation had cleared him of obstructing justice.
The president also offered mixed messages on Russia’s efforts to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 campaign. Early in the day, Trump tweeted he had “nothing to do with Russia helping me get elected.”
That was the first time he seemed to acknowledge that Russia tried to help his campaign. Then on the White House South Lawn, Trump told reporters: “Russia did not help me get elected.” He said he got himself elected.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A South Korean newspaper is reporting that North Korea executed a senior envoy involved in nuclear negotiations with the U.S. as well as four other high-level officials. But as ever with North Korea there are reasons to be cautious about the purported purge.
While North Korea hasn’t used its propaganda services to comment, Friday’s report in the conservative Chosun Ilbo daily could be true.
North Korea has previously executed scapegoats to atone for political flops, and the most recent summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump ended in failure.
But it’s important to note that both South Korean media and the government in Seoul have a history of reporting scoops about the inner workings of North Korea that turn out to be wrong.
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The South Korean foreign minister says the cruise ship that collided with a sightseeing boat packed with South Korean tourists, causing it to sink quickly in the Danube River, has been released and is on its way to Germany.
The captain of the cruise ship has been detained. He is a Ukrainian national suspected of endangering water transport leading to a deadly mass accident. There are seven confirmed dead and 21 more people missing. Seven others have survived.
Kang Kyung-wha, the South Korean foreign minister, said Friday at a joint press conference with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto that the owner of ship has promised to fully cooperate with the investigation into the Wednesday evening collision.
Kang said, “we have seen the footage of a larger vessel ramming into a small boat in bad weather, causing the boat to sink.” She added that “if the investigation finds the ship’s owner responsible, there will be a thorough legal response over its fault.”
SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon is awash in pot, glutted with so much legal weed that if growing were to stop today, it could take more than six years by one estimate to smoke or eat it all.
Now, five years after the state legalized recreational marijuana, it is looking to curb production.
Lawmakers are moving to give the Oregon Liquor Control Commission more leeway to deny new marijuana-growing licenses based on supply and demand.
The bill, which passed the Senate and is now before the House, is aimed at reducing the huge surplus, preventing diversion of unsold legal marijuana into the black market and forestalling a crackdown by federal prosecutors.
Supply is running twice as high as demand, and the retail price has plummeted.
OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Eight spellers were better than the dictionary. They were better than anything the Scripps National Spelling Bee could throw at them. And they all ended up with a hand on the trophy.
In the most extraordinary ending in the 94-year history of the competition, the bee ended in an eight-way tie on Thursday night. The eight co-champions spelled the final 47 words correctly, going through five consecutive perfect rounds.
Each will get the full winner’s prize of $50,000 in cash.
They are: Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao and Rohan Raja.
