Bismarck (CSi)   On June 6th, 2019, the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission finalized approximately $3.5 million in infrastructure grant allocations to multiple public airports throughout the state.  The individual awards are noted on the attached listings which show 165 individual projects received grant awards at 58 different public-use airports throughout the state.

Jamestown Regional Airport received grants for terminal apron reconstruction, in the amount of $55,555, $3,000 for other repairs, and $15,950, for terminal apron lighting.

Additionally, the Aeronautics Commission also provided aviation education grants as follows:

  • $7,930 to the Dakota Territory Air Museum in Minot for equipment to promote Unmanned Aerial System technology programming to K-12 students.
  • $11,895 to the Missouri River Area Career and Technical Center to help purchase aviation simulator and computer equipment to enhance rural North Dakota high school aviation programs.

The revenue source for these grants is derived primarily from state tax collections on aviation fuel and aircraft sales. A majority of these grant allocations will also match federal grants that are anticipated to be received for 2019 airport projects.  These state grants are critical in maintaining the needed infrastructure to support the aviation industry, which is a major contributor to the state’s economy.

Sawyer got the idea after her father took a mission trip to Zambia.

FRENCH OPEN

Women’s tour criticizes French Open scheduling

PARIS (AP) _ The women’s semifinals are starting at Roland Garros on an unusual day and at unusual courts — and the placement of the matches away from the main stadium has been criticized by the head of the women’s tennis tour.

WTA CEO Steve Simon says the tour is “extremely disappointed” by the scheduling and calls it “unfair and inappropriate.”

Normally, all French Open singles semifinals are held in Court Philippe Chatrier, with the women on Thursday and men on Friday. But after a full day of play was washed out by rain on Wednesday, tournament officials were forced to shuffle the schedule.

With quarterfinal action moved to Thursday, the women’s semifinals got shifted to Friday, sharing the day with the men’s semis.

NBA FINALS

Warriors’ Thompson set to return; executive punished for Lowry shove

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ Klay Thompson is set to return from a left hamstring injury for the Golden State Warriors in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors on Friday night.

Two-time reigning finals MVP Kevin Durant remains out, however. Durant strained his right calf on May 8 in the Western Conference semifinals. Toronto leads the best-of-seven finals 2-1.

On the Toronto side, Kyle Lowry says the Warriors executive who shoved him in Game 3 should not be allowed to be part of the league going forward. The NBA is in partial agreement, banning Mark Stevens from NBA games for one year.

Stevens is a Warriors investor who made contact with the Raptors’ guard after Lowry dove into the seats for a loose ball. Lowry says Stevens is “not a good look for the ownership group that they have” with Golden State. He’s also thankful for the support he’s gotten from other NBA players, including LeBron James.

The NBA also fined Stevens $500,000 for the incident.

NBA-NETS/HAWKS TRADE

The Nets were already in position to be able to afford a max player. Moving Crabbe’s $18.5 million salary for 2019-20 will create more cap room.

Richardson had pleaded guilty earlier this year to accepting $20,000 in bribes from an aspiring business manager for pro athletes.

In world and national news…

ATLANTA (AP) — After two days of intense criticism, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has reversed course and declared that he no longer supports a long-standing congressional ban on using federal health care money to pay for abortions.

Biden’s reversal came after rivals and women’s rights groups blasted him for affirming through his campaign aides that he still supported the Hyde Amendment.

With the shift announced Thursday, Biden could limit any damage from women’s groups and progressives who already are skeptical about whether a 76-year-old white man who leans centrist can be the party standard-bearer in 2020. Yet it also marks a change from years spent trying to hold what he described as a “middle ground” on abortion.

BAGHDAD (AP) — International investigators believe last month’s attacks on oil tankers in a United Arab Emirates port were led by a foreign state using divers on speed boats who planted mines on the vessels.

They did not name Iran, which the U.S. has blamed for the attacks.

That’s what United Nations ambassadors from the Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Norway told a closed meeting with U.N. Security Council members on Thursday.

Four tankers from those countries were hit on May 12 off the Emirati coast.

U.S. national security adviser John Bolton has said Iran is responsible for the attacks. On Thursday, the Saudi ambassador to the U.N., Abdallah Al-Mouallimi (ab-DAH’-lah al-mooah-LEEH’-meeh), speaking only for his country, said Saudi Arabia also blames Iran for the sabotage.

Scientific and naval experts conducted the probe, analyzing tanker debris, radar data and the precisely placed explosive charges.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. and Mexican officials claim to be making progress in their effort to avoid import tariffs. But President Donald Trump is still threatening to impose them as he tries to pressure Mexico into stemming the flow of Central American migrants across America’s southern border.

Vice President Mike Pence, monitoring the talks from his travels in Pennsylvania, said Thursday the U.S. was “encouraged” by Mexico’s latest proposals but that, so far, tariffs still were set to take effect on Monday.

He added that it would be “for the president to decide” whether Mexican was doing enough to head off the tariffs. Trump has threatened to impose a 5% tax on all Mexican goods beginning Monday as part of an escalating tariff regime opposed by many in his own Republican Party.

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The military is investigating the president of the U.S. Naval War College amid allegations that he spent excessively, abused his hiring authority and otherwise behaved inappropriately.

Multiple current and former college employees told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that they have raised concerns for over a year about Rear Adm. Jeffrey Harley’s conduct at the helm of the school that grooms future admirals and generals.

Harley says the complaints are confined to a few people who don’t like his leadership.

Documents obtained by the AP show the college has struggled to make payroll under Harley’s leadership and spent about $725,000 annually on raises while facing an annual shortfall of $5 million or more.

Harley has also sent a series of campuswide emails that have raised eyebrows, including offers of “free hugs” and games of Twister in his office.

WASHINGTON (AP) — With worries rising about trade wars and slower global growth, Friday’s jobs figures for May could serve as a reminder that the U.S. economy is still mostly in good shape.

Or, an unexpectedly weak employment report could intensify concerns that after a healthy first quarter, the U.S. economy is actually stumbling.

Economists have forecast that the government will report that employers added 185,000 jobs, a solid figure consistent with this year’s average monthly gain. The unemployment rate is expected to remain at a nearly 50-year low of 3.6%, according to data provider FactSet.

The economy is showing signs of sluggishness after having expanded at a healthy 3.1% annual rate in the April-June quarter. Consumers have been cautious about spending, and companies are scaling back investment in high-cost machinery and equipment.
