Jamestown  Ally Knutson, (JRMC) — Miles matter when a person is sick.

For Rocky Gabel, some of the most memorable miles were on his motorcycle.

Gabel, of Valley City, created the Thundering Saints motorcycle group in memory of his late wife, Debbie. Doctors diagnosed Debbie with ovarian cancer in 2005. After her diagnosis, she took up an interest in motorcycles. When she was healthy, the couple often rode together, he on his bike and she on hers.

In 2008, after seven surgeries in three years, Debbie was too sick to ride alone. So she rode double with her husband.

Since then, the two ride together, though in a more spiritual way. In Debbie’s honor, Rocky and the Thundering Saints organize an annual motorcycle ride. Proceeds benefit local individuals fighting the battle with cancer, as well as Hospice of the Red River Valley in Valley City.

In 2019, those funds also supported another cause – the cancer center at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

“The travel for cancer care is miserable,” Rocky said. “The JRMC Cancer Center will make a big difference.”

The JRMC Cancer Center is set to take its first patient on June 17, after its Ribbon Cutting Celebration on June 13.

JRMC expects more than 100 individuals to receive cancer care in its center each month.

The JRMC Cancer Center includes six sun-lit infusion rooms, two exam rooms, a nutrition area and nurses station. Patients’ individual treatment areas include state-of-the-art, sit-to-stand infusion chairs and companion chairs for visitors, smart TVs, WiFi and refreshments for patients and their companions.

People in rural communities like Jamestown and Valley City deserve access to state-of-the-art care close to home, said Trisha Jungels, chief nursing officer.

“Miles matter when you are sick,” she said. “We’re proud to offer this care in our conveniently located, ultra-modern space.”

The Debbie Gabel Memorial Cancer Ride is set for Saturday, July 27. The ride begins at the Valley City Eagles Club; 345 12th Ave NE in Valley City, N.D. Sign-up is open from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with kickstands up at noon. Cost: $20 for riders, $10 co-pilots. There will be a $500 cash drawing for registered riders. For more information, call Rocky Gabel at (701) 490-0360. To learn more about the JRMC Cancer Center, visit www.jrmcnd.com/cancer.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Three cats have died in a fire at a Bismarck mobile home.

The Bismarck Fire Department says no people were home when smoke was reported coming from the unit just after 6 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters were able to limit most of the damage to the kitchen but found the bodies of three cats during a search.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage is estimated at more than $30,000.

In regional news…

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a father died trying to save his 3-year-old child who fell into a northwestern Minnesota lake. The Becker County sheriff’s office says Christopher Franklin Nicholas Schultz jumped into Detroit Lake after his child fell from the bridge at Dead Shot Bay on Saturday evening. Authorities say the 32-year-old father struggled to keep his child above water. Bystanders rescued the toddler, but Schultz, of nearby Frazee, didn’t resurface. He died at a Detroit Lakes hospital.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Rick Berg of Fargo has been elected to his first full term as chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party.

Members of the party’s state committee unanimously backed Berg at their meeting in Bismarck on Saturday.

Berg was first elected party chairmaan in March 2018 to fill out the term of Kelly Armstrong, who stepped down to run for Congress.

Berg served in the North Dakota House of Representatives from 1985 to 2011 with stints as speaker and majority leader. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2010 when he defeated Democrat Earl Pomeroy. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2012 but lost to Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — Over 500 people slipped, slid and ran through the mud in New Salem’s annual Medieval Rush.

They also climbed walls, carried sandbags, tossed stones and wore pink tutus as they slogged their way through what organizers call the largest and longest-running mud run in North Dakota. In keeping with the medieval theme, some wore armor or similar gear.

This year organizers added dirt bikes and an inflatable slide to the 5K run, which featured 24 obstacles.

Race director Tanner Schweitzer says the idea is to get people off of their phones, out of their homes, and to interact with other people face to face as they help each other over the obstacles.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota plans to ask the Trump administration to intervene in a dispute over Washington state’s new safety restrictions on oil shipped by rail.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem told The Bismarck Tribune he plans to petition the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to tell Washington state that it doesn’t have the authority to require crude shipped by rail through Washington to have more of its volatile gases removed than North Dakota requires.

Washington passed the requirement to reduce the chances of massive explosions during derailments.

North Dakota officials say the Washington state requirement essentially bans crude-by-rail traffic to refineries throughout the Pacific Northwest and is a potential blow to North Dakota’s energy industry.

Stenehjem’s office is also working on a federal lawsuit against Washington alleging that the requirement violates interstate commerce law.

Tara Lee, a spokeswoman for Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, says the issue should be settled in court, “not via press release.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Federal Highway Administration has approved construction of a bridge across the Little Missouri River in western North Dakota, although some private landowners have been fighting the project and supporters have not said how they will pay for it.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that the Billings County Commission wants the river crossing to improve emergency response. Opponents worry it would impact the remote and scenic landscape of the Badlands. One rancher has said it would destroy his property.

An environmental study last year identified the site north of Medora as the preferred route, which the feds approved last week.

Billings County Commission Chairman Jim Arthaud says a timeline for the project has not yet been established. The next steps include meeting with private landowners to try and obtain right-of-way.

Yanks get Encarnacion from M’s

UNDATED (AP) _ The Yankees’ acquisition of Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kahr-nah-see-OHN’) has been completed.

The slugger is coming over from the Mariners for 19-year-old minor league pitcher Juan Then. Seattle is also picking up about $8.4 million of Encarnacion’s roughly $16.4 million contract he is guaranteed.

The 36-year-old Encarnación has hit 21 home runs this season and has averaged 37 homers and 109 RBIs in his last seven years.

Manager Aaron Boone says he plans to use Encarnación primarily as his designated hitter and give him a few games at first base. Boone says he expects Encarnación to be available when the Yankees open a three-game series against the Rays on Monday.

His arrival meant the demotion of outfielder Clint Frazier, who was hitting .283 with 34 RBIs in 53 games.

In world and national news…

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Editorials in English-language newspapers in the United Arab Emirates are urging calm and diplomacy after a further spike in tensions following last week’s attack on oil tankers near the Persian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi’s The National says a diplomatic resolution with Iran is still possible, and while it quoted neighboring Saudi Arabia’s crown prince as saying that Iran was behind the first attacks on oil tankers in the region last month, the editorial said investigations were still ongoing and “their source is yet to be confirmed.”

It says the UAE has been calling for de-escalation and believes “diplomacy must always come first.”

Dubai’s Gulf News similarly stressed that “all the major players, including Iran, do not want war.”

It says that “because of skyrocketing tensions, it is incumbent that all parties exercise caution and restraint going forward.”

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — As lights turned back on across Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay after a massive blackout hit tens of millions people, authorities were still largely in the dark about what caused the collapse of the interconnected grid and tallied the damage from the unforeseen disaster.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri promised a thorough investigation into what he called an “unprecedented” outage, one that raised questions about flaws in South America’s grid, which connects many of the region’s largest countries.

Energy officials said the results of the investigation would be available in 10 to 15 days, and they could not immediately provide details on the economic impact of the outage, which came on a Sunday, and a day before a national holiday in Argentina.

FAISALABAD, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani investigations are uncovering the extent of trafficking networks that sell young women into prostitution in China after tricking them into marriage with Chinese men.

Hundreds of Pakistani women and girls, mostly Christians, a community that is among the poorest of the poor in the country, have been married off to Chinese men by their families in return for cash.

But even as police uncover the networks, the Pakistani government has tried to keep the revelations quiet because they fear it will hurt vital economic ties with Beijing.

The Associated Press reported previously how Christian pastors and Pakistani and Chinese brokers work together in a lucrative trade, aggressively pursuing Pakistani girls who are tricked into fraudulent marriages and find themselves trapped in China with sometimes abusive husbands.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Police Department is gathering evidence and video footage in an administrative investigation into an off-duty officer who shot and killed a man authorities say attacked him inside a Southern California Costco Wholesale warehouse store.

Authorities did not respond Sunday to requests for comment about what provoked the Friday night confrontation and whether anyone but the officer was armed. Two others were critically injured in the shooting in Corona, which is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

The officer opened fire after Kenneth French, 32, of Riverside, “assaulted” him “without provocation” as the officer held his young child, Corona police said Saturday.

Bullets struck French and two of his family members, police said.

Rick Shureih, French’s cousin, told The Press-Enterprise that he was a “gentle giant” who was mentally disabled. Shureih also identified the other two victims as French’s parents, Russell and Paola French, and said they remained in an intensive care unit Sunday.

HONG KONG (AP) — Protesters in Hong Kong have gathered outside the office of the city’s leader, demanding that she resign for her handling of an unpopular extradition bill.

The mostly young demonstrators blocked a street Monday near the city’s waterfront as they stood outside the office of Chief Executive Carrie Lam, chanting calls for her to give up the proposed legislation.

Lam has apologized for the crisis and suspended work on the bill, which would allow suspects to face trial in mainland Chinese courts.

Protesters are demanding that she scrap the bill and that authorities apologize for how police quelled an earlier demonstration, using tear gas, rubber bullets and other forceful means. They also want the government not to prosecute those involved, and to withdraw Lam’s designation of the protest as a “riot.”

SHENZHEN, China (AP) — Huawei’s founder says it never occurred to the Chinese technology company that the U.S. government would be so determined to take extreme measures against it.

Ren Zhengfei said Monday, “I think both sides will suffer. No one will win.”

He said the company’s revenues will be $30 billion less than forecast over the next two years and the company will reduce capacity but that U.S. restrictions “will not stop us.”

The U.S. has put Huawei on a blacklist, meaning that American companies that want to sell parts to Huawei will need approval from the U.S. Commerce Department.

LE BOURGET, France (AP) — France, Germany and Spain have agreed to develop a joint European fighter jet and air combat system that could also control drones and satellites.

With a model of the jet as a backdrop, defense ministers from the three countries signed an agreement Monday at the Paris Air Show that lays out how the countries will cooperate on the project, which would include a new-generation combat aircraft. French President Emmanuel Macron presided over the signing.

The Future Combat Air System is expected to be operational by 2040.

France sees it as a key step in its push for more European defense efforts, given U.S. President Donald Trump’s apparent lack of enthusiasm for supporting Europe militarily.

Authorities have not said how much it would cost but the dpa news agency estimates it could be 100 billion euros ($112 billion).
