Jamestown  (National Buffalo Museum)   Friday, June 28, 2019 –  With sadness, the National Buffalo Museum announces the unexpected death of the herd’s white bull, Dakota Miracle, who succumbed to injuries from an accidental fall into a ravine. Dakota Miracle was 13 years old. His health was compromised due to leucism. Leucism is a genetic condition resulting in lack of pigmentation. One of the setbacks Dakota Miracle faced due to his leucism included poor eyesight, a factor believed to have led to his fall. Board President Don Williams and Executive Director Ilana Xinos found him deceased during a routine herd and pasture inspection.

Dakota Miracle is the son of White Cloud, an albino bison who lived with the museum’s herd for almost two decades.

She adds, that with the death of Dakota Miracle, there remains no albino bison in the herd. She adds that another albino, Dakota Legend, born in 2008 was returned to the Shirek Buffalo Ranch near Michigan, North Dakota, a few years ago.

Illana says, “While we mourn the untimely passing of Dakota Miracle, we know he had a full life as a part of the museum’s herd.  He was a rare and beautiful animal, and we feel fortunate that so many people were able to see him roaming with the herd for the past 13 years. In the wild, we do not believe he would have lived this long.”

The National Buffalo Museum’s mission is to educate the public on the cultural and historical significance of the American bison. For more information, contact Ilana Xinos at 701-252-8648 or director@buffalomuseum.com.

The April figure was 55.9.Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says “weak farm income, produced partially by tariffs and flooding, pulled regional growth below that of the nation.”The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth. A score below that suggests decline. The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s attorney general says a new law that requires that state auditor to get approval from a legislative committee to conduct performance audits is likely unconstitutional.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem issued the opinion Friday just days before the law was to take effect. Approval of the measure, which came during the legislative session’s final days in April, has drawn widespread criticism and spurred a referral campaign to ask voters to strip the legislation from the books.

State Auditor Josh Gallion, who requested the opinion in May, believes it bolsters his authority to conduct audits as he so chooses. Stenehjem says the new law will likely lead a court to determine if it’s unconstitutional under the separation of powers doctrine.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota couple who were kids at a wedding ceremony nearly 20 years ago are tying the knot themselves.

The couple started dating in August 2017 and got engaged in June 2018.

Renae says, “If it wasn’t for that wedding, none of this would have ever happened.”

Bowman gets first Cup win

The 26-year-old Bowman had just six top-five finishes in 133 starts on NASCAR’s top series before his banner day on the bumpy 1.5 mile oval. He had one of the fastest cars during practice, and a rain delay of nearly three hours did nothing to slow him down.

Kyle Larson put together another memorable run a year after he lost an epic last-lap duel with Kyle Busch on the same track. Larson passed Bowman with about seven laps left, but Bowman quickly regained the lead and smartly navigated his way to the finish.

Joey Logano finished third, followed by Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski.

HONG KONG (AP) — A group of protesters in Hong Kong has torn down part of glass and metal exterior wall of the legislature building.

Hong Kong Cable TV showed live video Monday of them pulling off long strips of metal framework from the wall and carrying them away.

Earlier, the mostly young protesters hacked away repeatedly at the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, shattering them until they collapsed.

The protesters say the Hong Kong government is not responding to their demands for a full withdrawal of contentious extradition legislation and the resignation of city leader Carrie Lam.

Lam said earlier Monday that she would do a better job of listening to the voices of young people, but she has resisted calls to step down.

HEBRON, West Bank (AP) — When travelers shop at dozens of duty free stores at airports worldwide, they may be paying for more than a bottle of vodka or a box of chocolates.

The Falic family of Florida, owners of the Duty Free Americas chain, funds a generous and sometimes controversial philanthropic empire in Israel that runs through the corridors of power and stretches deep into the occupied West Bank. An AP investigation found the family has donated over $5.6 million to settler organizations in the West Bank and east Jerusalem over the past decade, funding synagogues, schools and social services as well as far-right causes.

The Falics illustrate how wealthy U.S. donors have bolstered the controversial settlement movement. They say they believe Jews have the right to live anywhere in the Holy Land.

OPAL, Va. (AP) — The Transportation Department is poised to relax the federal rules that govern how many hours a day truck drivers can be behind the wheel.

Interest groups that represent motor carriers and truck drivers have lobbied for revisions they say would make the rigid “hours of service” rules more flexible.

The trucking industry has developed a strong relationship with President Donald Trump, who’s made rolling back layers of regulatory oversight a priority.

Highway safety advocates say the contemplated changes represent a dangerous weakening of regulations and will result in truckers putting in even longer days at a time when they say driver fatigue already is such a serious problem. They point to new government data that shows fatal crashes involving trucks weighing as much as 80,000 pounds have increased.

BRUSSELS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron says the European Union should learn lessons from the “failure” by EU leaders to agree on who will get the bloc’s top jobs.

Macron told reporters that an all-night summit with the EU’s 28 leaders “gives an image of Europe that is not serious” because it resulted in a stalemate.

This failure, he said, should lead to “deep changes” to how the EU’s institutions operate.

The EU leaders agreed to meet again Tuesday.

MIAMI (AP) — The sprawling Democratic primary field is poised to shrink, with more than half of the two dozen candidates facing danger of failing to meet tougher requirements to appear in September and October’s debates.

Those who don’t make it could forge on. But it would be a political death knell at a time when most voters are just starting to tune in.

The Democratic National Committee is requiring participants to hit 2% in multiple polls and collect contribution from 130,000 individual donors.

Of 20 candidates who qualified for the opening round of debates in June and July, just six are sure to appear in the fall round.

That could yield a field that’s older, whiter and more male — an uncomfortable development for a party that prizes its diversity.

DALLAS (AP) — Federal officials say two crew members and eight passengers were killed when a small, twin-engine plane crashed into a hangar during takeoff at a Dallas-area airport.

National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg said the plane crashed at 9:11 a.m. Sunday at the Addison Municipal Airport. He says, “We don’t know a lot about the people on board at this point.”

Landsberg says the plane was headed to St. Petersburg, Florida.

He also said the plane had recently changed hands so it’s not clear what the proper tail number currently was.

Jennifer Rodi, the NTSB’s lead investigator on the accident, said it had previously been owned by a private charter company in Chicago.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is resuming commercial whaling after 31 years, meeting a long-cherished goal seen as a largely lost cause.

Whaling boats embarked Monday on their first commercial hunts since 1988, when Japan switched to so-called research whaling, but will stay within the country’s exclusive economic waters. Japan’s six-month notice to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission took effect Sunday.

The Fisheries Agency said the catch quota through the end of this year is set at 227 whales, fewer than the 333 Japan used to hunt in the Antarctic.

The resumption is condemned by many conservation groups, but others see it as a face-saving way for the embattled whaling industry to come to a natural end.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — No matter the outcome, the murder trial of Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher accused of killing a wounded Islamic State captive and shooting civilians in Iraq in 2017 has provided a rare view into the insular Navy SEAL community and likely will have a long-term impact on one of the military’s most secretive and revered forces.

Closing arguments are expected on Monday.

Gallagher has pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted murder and other charges.

Nearly a dozen Alpha platoon members of SEAL Team 7 testified during the court-martial at Naval Base San Diego. Many were granted immunity, including a Navy SEAL who stunned the court when he testified that he killed the militant after Gallagher stabbed him by plugging his breathing tube.
