BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Department of Health has confirmed this season’s first human case of West Nile virus in the state.Health officials say the individual lives in McHenry County and was not hospitalized.

West Nile virus surveillance coordinator Evan Bischoff says this is the second consecutive year in which the first human case of West Nile virus was reported earlier than usual.

The health department recommends that people take precautions to avoid mosquito bites by taking measures such as using bug spray and wearing protective clothing, and using screens on doors and windows to keep mosquitoes outside.

Most people infected with West Nile virus experience no symptoms. But common symptoms include fever, headache and body or joint aches or a rash. More serious symptoms could also develop.
