Jamestown  (JRMC) — For the first time since the opening, golfers will take to the course in support of those battling cancer.

Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s annual Golf “FORE” Good tournament is set for Friday, July 19. All proceeds benefit the JRMC Cancer Center.

JRMC Foundation director Lisa Jackson, says, “This year is an especially exciting year. Now that the JRMC Cancer Center is open, we feel energized. We appreciate the community’s support as we continue to raise funds to sustain this service.”

The JRMC Cancer Center opened in June 2019. The center offers chemotherapy and other infusions in its six sun-lit and spacious infusion bays. The space also includes exam rooms, a consultation area and space for nurses and staff. The community raised $1.7 million of the $1.9 million needed to build the space.

Now that it is open, the JRMC Cancer Center will provide chemotherapy infusions for more than 100 residents of Jamestown and the surrounding communities. Currently, those people travel more than 100 miles for that care. This will eliminate more than 160,000 miles of travel per year.

The title Golf “FORE” Good sponsor is the JRMC Auxiliary.

The JRMC Auxiliary title sponsored the event for the second time this year. The 40 or so members support JRMC through organizing fundraisers and supporting the JRMC Gift Shoppe.

JRMC Auxiliary president, Eunice Sahr, says, “Everyone is so in favor of getting the JRMC Cancer Center here so people don’t have to drive.”

The North Dakota Public Service Commission decided unanimously Wednesday to open the proposal up for public input.

Texas-based Energy Transfer said last month it plans to expand the pipeline’s capacity from more than 500,000 barrels per day to as much as 1.1 million barrels.

The company would build additional pumping stations in North Dakota, South Dakota and Illinois. Since some of the land in North Dakota falls outside the pipeline corridor, permission is needed from the PSC.

In world and national news…

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tropical Storm Barry’s wind and rain are starting to hit Louisiana as New Orleans and coastal communities brace for what’s expected to be the first hurricane of the season.

A hurricane warning was in effect along the Louisiana coast, and forecasters said the storm could make landfall as a hurricane by early Saturday.

But it’s the storm’s rains that are expected to pose a severe test of New Orleans’ improved post-Katrina flood defenses. Barry could bring more than a foot and a half (0.5 meters) of rain to parts of the state as it moves slowly inland.

(AP)  New Orleans residents are warily eying the levees that protect their city from a swollen Mississippi River as Tropical Storm Barry approaches the Gulf Coast.

Never in the modern history of New Orleans has water from the Mississippi River overtopped the city’s levees. That could change this weekend if it turns out forecasters are underestimating the storm’s flooding threat.

On Thursday, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers models weren’t calling for water from the river to rise above New Orleans’ levees. However, Corps spokesman Ricky Boyett said the height of the river levees remains the Corps’ greatest concern with this storm, which could dump 10 to 15 inches (25 to 38 centimeters) of rain on New Orleans through Sunday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Singer R. Kelly was arrested in Chicago Thursday after he was indicted on 13 federal counts including sex crimes, a U.S. Attorney’s office spokesman said.

Joseph Fitzpatrick said the R&B singer was taken into custody about 7 p.m. local time and was being held by federal authorities.

He was arrested after a 13-count federal indictment was handed down earlier Thursday in federal court for the Northern District of Illinois.

“The counts include child porn, enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice,” Fitzpatrick said, adding that further details would be released Friday.

The R&B singer already faces separate state sex-related charges in Illinois involving four women, three of whom were minors when the alleged abuse occurred. He pleaded not guilty to those charges and was released on bail.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Just a week after insisting that he was “absolutely moving forward,” President Donald Trump has abandoned his effort to insert a citizenship question into next year’s census.

Instead, he directed federal agencies to try to compile the information using existing databases.

The president said it is essential to have a clear breakdown of the number of citizens and non-citizens that make up the U.S. population. The decision was clearly a reversal, after the Supreme Court blocked his effort by disputing his administration’s rationale for demanding that census respondents declare whether or not they were citizens.

Trump wanted to pursue that effort, but the administration said that census deadlines made it impossible.
