MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — The Red Cross is helping tenants displaced by a large apartment fire in Mandan.
Firefighters from Mandan and Bismarck rotated in and out of service Sunday afternoon because of the sweltering heat. Temperatures approached 90 degrees (32 Celsuis).
Deputy Mandan Police Chief Lori Flaten says the fire destroyed the roof of the 42-unit building. She was unsure about the stability of the rest of the structure.
Red Cross spokeswoman Gretchen Hjelmstad says the agency is meeting with affected families to determine their needs and will provide financial assistance, among other things.
The Bismarck Tribune says Mandan Middle School served as a temporary shelter for the residents.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo authorities say one person is dead after a fire in a rental storage unit.
Crews were called to the fire around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and found smoke coming from a unit of the storage complex. Crews contained the fire to the single rental unit. During a search firefighters found a man dead inside the storage unit.
The name of the victim was not released. Both the Fargo fire and police departments are jointly investigating the cause of the fire and the death.
Damage to the storage unit is estimated at about $15,000.
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Authorities are trying to find whoever set fire to several trash containers in downtown Fargo.
Firefighters responded to a string of dumpster fires early Sunday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Supreme Court has sided with the state in a dispute involving natural gas royalties.
The Bismarck Tribune reports Thursday’s decision stems from a lawsuit Newfield Exploration filed against the state after the Department of Trust Lands conducted an audit in 2016 that claimed the company was underpaying royalties to the agency.
North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says in a statement that his group, while not involved in the case, was disappointed in the decision. The Supreme Court’s ruling reversed a previous one from a Northwest Judicial District judge.
Land Commissioner Jodi Smith says the agency will now work with the state attorney general’s office to determine how far back Newfield and other affected operators will need to retroactively pay the state.
Bismarck (NDHP) Troopers responded to Highway 83 and I-94 near Sterling to assist multiple semi-trucks hauling wind turbine blades make the turn onto I-94W from Highway 83. Trucks were hauling the turbine blades from Aberdeen, SD to Glen Ullin. Troopers successfully got all trucks heading west bound on I-94 towards the Bismarck-Mandan Area. Minutes later Troopers took another call that 2 of the trucks veered off their permitted route and took a wrong exit onto the Expressway in Mandan. The trucks then took the exit towards Memorial Highway in Mandan. The trucks got stuck at the intersection of the off ramp and Memorial Highway blocking all lanes of traffic on Memorial Highway.
Troopers responded and escorted the trucks thru the City of Mandan onto old Highway 10 and back to the Interstate. Traffic had to be shut down multiple times at each intersection, so they could make the turns with their long turbine blades. Company hauling the blades was Bulldog Highway Express out of Charleston, SC. Both drivers were cited for violating the terms of their permits.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Even though Tropical Depression Barry did not unleash catastrophic flooding in Louisiana, many across the Gulf Coast were urged to take heed of tornado and flash-flood warnings Monday as the storm moved north.
Barry was downgraded from a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon but continued to pose a threat. Much of Louisiana and Mississippi were under flash-flood watches, as were parts of Arkansas, eastern Texas, western Tennessee and southeastern Missouri.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards urged residents to be cautious as they ventured outside after a weekend in which many had sheltered indoors.
He says he was “extremely grateful” that the storm had not caused the disastrous floods that had earlier been forecast.
According to poweroutage.us, about 60,000 customers in Louisiana and 3,300 customers in Mississippi were without power Sunday night.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is shrugging off sharp criticism for tweets branded as racist in which he says four outspoken liberal congresswomen of color should go back to their “broken and crime infested” countries.
All are U.S. citizens and only one is foreign-born.
While Democrats have condemned Trump’s remarks, Republicans have remained largely silent.
In a tweet Sunday night, Trump says it is “so sad” to see Democrats sticking up for the women.
While Trump didn’t name the four, he is almost certainly referring to congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan. Only Omar, from Somalia, is foreign-born.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in reply, “You are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”
NEW YORK (AP) — Federal prosecutors say several more women have contacted them since financier Jeffrey Epstein’s arrest to say he abused them when they were underage.
They cited the contacts in arguing against bail prior to a hearing Monday.
Epstein’s lawyers say he’s no threat to flee and should await trial under house arrest in his $77 million Manhattan mansion.
Prosecutors, calling him a flight risk and danger, say evidence against him is growing “stronger by the day.”
They say they worry Epstein will try to influence witnesses if he is not incarcerated on charges that he recruited and abused dozens of underage girls in New York and Florida in the early 2000s.
Epstein’s lawyers, though, say he’s lived a law-abiding life since pleading guilty to Florida solicitation charges in 2008.
BRUSSELS (AP) — China has called on all parties to remain committed to the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, saying the U.S. should respect the interests of others and abandon its maximum-pressure approach.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Monday that “all parties should keep calm and exercise restraint and stay committed to solving problems through dialogue under the framework of a comprehensive agreement.”
He described U.S. pressure as the root cause of recent developments, and said it’s “better for the one who made the trouble to fix it.”
Iran recently begun surpassing uranium enrichment limits set in the 2015 deal.
Geng says China hopes “the U.S. will abandon its wrong practices, respect the legitimate rights and interests of other parties and not hinder the implementation of the agreement.”
TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Demonstrators have returned to an immigration jail in Washington state a day after an armed man threw incendiary devices at the detention center and later died.
Willem Van Spronsen was found dead Saturday after four police officers arrived and opened fire.
KOMO-TV reports demonstrators returned Sunday to the privately run Tacoma Northwest Detention Center.
The facility holds migrants pending deportation proceedings. The detention center has also held immigration-seeking parents separated from their children under President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy, an effort meant to deter illegal immigration.
The demonstrators are protesting the facility and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups that are supposed to begin Sunday.
Van Spronsen’s friend, Deb Bartley, told The Seattle Times she thinks he wanted to provoke a fatal conflict. She describes him as an anarchist.
LACONIA, N.H. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO’-tuh-juhj) represent the generational poles of the crowded Democratic presidential primary.
The 76-year-old Biden is hoping Democratic voters see his decades of experience as the remedy for Trump’s presidency. Buttigieg argues that the moment calls for the energy of a new generation.
The call for generational change, and how Democrats resolve it, could prove to be even more consequential. It’s a fight not just over which candidate gives Democrats the best chance of defeating Trump in 2020, but the direction of the party for years to come.
So far, Biden’s and Buttigieg’s strategies have yielded early success. Biden has led primary polls for much of the year, while Buttigieg tops the most recent fundraising race.
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Police say four children aged 10 to 14 packed fishing rods in a parent’s SUV, left a farewell note then drove more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) down the Australian east coast before they were stopped the next day.
Acting Police Inspector Darren Williams said on Monday the children were stopped by police near Grafton in New South Wales on Sunday, then locked the doors and refused to get out.
He says a police officer used a baton to break a window of the Nissan Patrol, which had been reported stolen.
The children are suspected of failing to pay for gasoline at two gas stations and were briefly chased by police when a 13-year-old is suspected to have been driving.
Williams said they will be charged.
