Evelyn C. Putnam, 102, of Jamestown, ND passed away July 17, 2019 at Eventide Nursing Home.

Evelyn Holmes was born February 4, 1917 on a farm north of Jud, ND to John M. and Christine (Sjoberg) Holmes. In the fall of 1917, she moved with her family to a farm 4 miles west of Nortonville, ND. She attended elementary school at Mikkelson Township Country School. In 1934 she graduated from Nortonville High School. She attended Valley City State Teachers College 1934-1935 and taught in Mikkelson Township three years. Evelyn then married Ralph H. Putnam on October 15, 1938.

Evelyn was a member of the Nortonville Methodist Church and was active in WSCS ladies’ group and also taught Sunday School. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She liked poetry and made a collection of her favorite poems. She always had a nice garden and also enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, and crocheting. Many family members were the recipients of beautiful quilts and afghans that she made. When she moved to Jamestown, she attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and joined a group of ladies who made quilts. Since November 28, 2013, she has resided at Eventide.

Evelyn is survived by one son, Lester (Joann Scholz), Montpelier, ND; three daughters: Marjorie (Norman) Waldner, Carpenter, SD: Marilyn Putnam, South Heart, ND; Helen (Terry) Timm, Milnor, ND; one daughter-in-law, Karen Putnam, Medora, ND; one sister-in-law, Marietta Holmes, Las Cruces, NM; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, 14 step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, son, Ernest, and daughter-in-law, Lenora, a step grandson, Rocklyn Waldner, sisters and spouses: Anna (Harold) Lint, Hilda (Richard) Ettelman, Isabelle (James) Hickey; brothers: Axel Holmes, John Oscar (Ethel) Holmes, Raymond (Myrtle) Holmes, and Roy Holmes.

 

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20, 2019 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, with Pastor Joel Winckler officiating.

Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley.
