WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A judge has refused to reduce bond for the 18-year-old woman charged with the death of her infant who was found unresponsive at a Willison hotel in April.
Hannah McMillin asked that her $1 million bond be lowered. KEYZ reports Northwest District Judge Benjamen Johnson denied that request Wednesday afternoon in Williams County Court.
McMillin was originally charged with child abuse, but a medical examiner determined the baby had been forcibly smothered and ruled the death a homicide. A pretrial conference set for Aug 20.
McMillin’s husband, Tank McMillin, is charged with child abuse. His next court appearance is in September.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A voter referendum is coming up short to block funding for the proposed Theodore Roosevelt presidential library in western North Dakota.
Dickinson electrician Riley Kuntz tells The Associated Press that the needed signatures for library referral “is not going to happen” by Thursday’s deadline.
Kuntz also submitted a referral petition last month to overturn a new law exempting lawmakers’ communications with public employees. The group headed by Kuntz missed the deadline Tuesday to get that proposal on the ballot.
Signatures to get a third referral on the ballot to stop new restrictions on the state auditor are due on July 31. Kuntz says it’s unlikely enough signatures on that issue will be gathered by the deadline.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary Preston Cole is telling wildlife officials attending a multi-state conference on chronic wasting disease that they need to talk to each other and come up with a regional approach to slowing the disease.
Representatives from wildlife agencies from an array of Midwestern states are gathering Wednesday and Thursday in Madison to discuss CWD. Cole began the conference by telling attendees that they’ve been trying to solve the disease on their own for too long.
He said states need to stop duplicating efforts and show the public that “we are on it.”
The conference agenda calls for discussions on the state of CWD research, where to focus research and CWD best management practices.

Oologah-Talala Public Schools Superintendent Max Tanner said in a statement that Bodine resigned in May.

The Cubs managed to salvage the series finale after Jon Lester was scratched due to illness, turning the game into a bullpen day for Chicago. Closer Craig Kimbrel allowed two singles in the ninth before getting Brandon Belt to fly out for his seventh save.
The Cubs’ lead in the NL Central is still a half-game over St. Louis after Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG’) led the Cardinals’ 14-8 pounding of the Pirates. DeJong, Andrew Knizner and Paul Goldschmidt each went deep during a three-run ninth for the Cards, who have won 10 of their last 12.
The Brewers remain two games behind the Cubs after Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH’-nee grahn-DAHL’) hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the fifth inning of a 5-4 victory against the Reds. Titans tackle announces suspension
UNDATED (AP) _ Tennessee Titans three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan says the NFL has suspended him for the first four games of the season for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.
In a video he posted to Twitter, Lewan says he received a letter from the NFL a few weeks ago informing of his suspension. He says he has taken a polygraph test and had the supplements tested but knows he’s responsible under the league’s collective bargaining agreement for what goes into his body.
Lewan says he’s never taken anything that would cheat the game and apologized to the Titans and also to fans.
Meanwhile, the Titans have made Kevin Byard the NFL’s highest-paid safety by giving him a contract extension hours before they report for training camp. Multiple reports said the five-year deal is worth $70.5 million with $31 million guaranteed.

Ailing Ledecky returns to US relay at world championships
GWANGJU, South Korea (AP) — Katie Ledecky is returning to competition at the world championships, with the ailing American set to swim in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
Ledecky’s return marks her first competition since Monday, when she withdrew from the 200 free preliminaries and the 1,500 free final because of illness.
Her coach, Greg Meehan, says Ledecky was bothered by dehydration and vomiting, symptoms that first began near the end of the U.S. team training camp in Singapore.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the wake of House hearings on the Mueller report, Democrats say they will continue to hold President Donald Trump to account.
Democrats have multiple investigations of the president underway that don’t require cooperation from the White House or the Justice Department. In addition, the House Judiciary Committee says it’s filing lawsuit to obtain secret grand jury testimony and to challenge the White House claim of “absolute immunity” to block testimony from Trump’s aides.
Apart from investigations, nearly 90 House Democrats have called for an impeachment inquiry, and more are certain to join the call after former special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony.
Democrats in both the House and the Senate want to move forward with legislation to make elections more secure after Mueller extensively detailed Russian interference.
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló has announced he will resign Aug. 2, conceding power after nearly two weeks of furious protests and political upheaval touched off by a leak of crude and insulting chat messages between him and his top advisers.
A crowd of thousands outside the governor’s mansion erupted into cheers and singing after Rosselló’s announcement on Facebook just before midnight.
The 40-year-old son of a former governor, Rosselló became the first chief executive to resign in the modern history of Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory of more than 3 million American citizens without full representation in Congress or the right to vote for president.
Justice Secretary Wanda Vázquez will assume the post less than halfway through Rosselló’s four-year term, becoming Puerto Rico’s second female governor.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea says the two weapons North Korea fired on Thursday were a new type of ballistic missile.
South Korea’s presidential office issued the assessment after a national security council meeting.
Seoul said earlier based on analysis of the launches that one missile flew 690 kilometers (430 miles) and the other 430 kilometers (270 miles) before landing in the waters off the east coast.
The presidential office says national security council members expressed “strong concerns” about the launches because they won’t be helpful for an effort to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called on the European Union to “rethink” its refusal to renegotiate the Brexit deal.
Addressing the House of Commons for the first time since becoming prime minister, Johnson said Britain would throw himself into efforts to make sure Britain leaves the EU on time on Oct. 31.
He insisted that Thursday is the first day of a new approach.
Rejecting “skeptics and doubters,” he said he is intent upon re-energizing “our great United Kingdom and making this country the greatest place on earth.”
“And when I say the greatest place on earth, I’m conscious that some may accuse me of hyperbole, but it’s useful to imagine the trajectory on which we could now be embarked.”
SPRING LAKE, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina hurricane survivors are frustrated with the slow spending of federal long-term housing recovery funds.
A May report from the General Assembly’s government watchdog agency showed that federal housing funds for Hurricane Matthew victims were delayed due to administrative mistakes and inexperience. As of July, over two years since Matthew made landfall, North Carolina had spent about 6% of those funds.
The federal recovery funds for Florence still need to undergo a lengthy process before the state receives them. As displaced Florence survivors wait for these funds, some are working on their homes themselves with the help of volunteer organizations. But, those repairs are not complete fixes to the home, meaning that homes could be more vulnerable in future storms. Many homes are still awaiting repairs.
