Jamestown   (Valley  News Live.com)  Jamestown Search & Rescue Dog Khloe was injured Friday night after a hit-and-run in Jamestown.

Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther is Khloe’s handler and says he takes blame for her getting out.

“I opened the door and she took off,” he said. “She has done it before. I called dispatch and they’re usually pretty good in locating her, but she returned shortly afterwards and was bleeding profusely.”

Reuther says he took Khloe to Dr. Dawn’s, who found that she had suffered no broken bones. He stated that his daughter located where Khloe had been hit, which was only about 30 feet away from the house.

“There’s no broken bones, which is a positive. She’s just going to be laid up for a little while. She’s going to be okay.”

Those with information are encouraged to say something on the case. But, Reuther says he’s not looking for donations or anything.

“I take full blame for it,” he stated. “I’m not looking for donations or anything. I just think the biggest thing is we would have thought someone would have let us know. I’m sure they would want the same for their animals or even children.”

While there is no law against hit and runs on dogs, Reuther just encourages people that if they hit a dog, cat, or other animal to tell someone.

“These are kids, their family,” Reuther said.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Police say a Bismarck woman has lost $98,000 in a scam by a caller who claimed his company had deposited too much money into her account.

Officer Lynn Wanner says the 78-year-old woman overnighted cash to the fake company several times. Wanner says the caller told the woman there was a mistake with deposits made into her account and asked her to correct the mistakes by sending money.

The Bismarck Tribune says over the course of a month the woman withdrew amounts of $15,000 to $19,000 and sent cash with next-day delivery. Wanner says investigations into such scams are difficult because there’s nothing to track.

Last month Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said nearly 100 North Dakotans have lost more than $2 million so far this year due to scams.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota launched electronic pulltabs one year ago and they instantly became the state’s most popular form of gambling. And the charities and the state’s treasury have ballooned with cash.

Data show North Dakotans wagered $410.5 million on the new machines in the first nine months following their debut.

But critics say the e-pulltabs are simply slot machines in disguise that take away profits from the state’s American Indian casinos and have caused problem gambling to soar.

Lisa Vig, who helps run a gambling treatment program in Fargo, called the machines’ popularity “very frightening.”

She says the e-machines are contributing greatly to “financial distress, emotional distress and family issues.”

HASTINGS, Neb.  (uj.edu)– Wide receiver Garrett Mitchell (SO/Shakopee, Minn.) caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Mann (SR/Bismarck, N.D.) to tie a program record, but the University of Jamestown football team fell to Hastings College 38-21 Saturday afternoon.

Hastings kept UJ off of the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, forcing a punt and recovering two Jimmie fumbles. Eleven of Hastings’ 14 fourth-quarter points resulted from Jamestown turnovers.

Mann finished 15-of-29 passing for 174 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. He also led the Jimmies in rushing with 21 yards on 15 carries. Mitchell caught six balls for 109 yards and the three scores. Barry Williams Jr. (SO/Las Vegas, Nev.) had three receptions for 24 yards.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry has condemned what he called “Iran’s attack on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” in an address to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s general conference in Vienna.

Perry said on Monday in Austria that “this behavior is unacceptable” and that Iran “must be held responsible.”

He added: “Make no mistake about it, this was a deliberate attack on the global economy and the global energy market.”

DETROIT (AP) — More than 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers union went on strike early Monday as contract talks with General Motors broke down.

Union members walked out of factories and set up picket lines at 33 plants across the nation as well as 22 parts warehouses.

UAW Vice President Terry Dittes (DIT-ez) says a strike is the union’s last resort because both sides are far apart in bargaining over a new four-year contract, including on issues like health care and fair wages.

But GM says it has made substantial offers, including higher wages and $7 billion worth of factory investments that would create hundreds of new jobs.

Bargaining was scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. EDT on Monday.

(AP)  OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma has filed for bankruptcy protection.

But that doesn’t mean the company or the family that owns it is off the legal hook.

States are divided on whether to accept a tentative settlement with the company as part of the bankruptcy.

Several of those who have declined it have made it clear that they plan to object to the bankruptcy and push forward with their claims against members of the Sackler family in state court.

It will be up to a bankruptcy judge to decide if those suits can move ahead. And even if he stops them, he could consider their claims in his court.

The bankruptcy filing Sunday will likely get Purdue out of a trial over the toll of opioids scheduled for October in Cleveland.

(AP)  An Associated Press investigation shows a dark side to booming sales of the cannabis extract CBD. Some people are substituting cheap and dangerous street drugs for the real thing.

As a result, vapes and other products marketed as helping a range of ailments instead have sent dozens of people to emergency rooms because they were spiked with synthetic marijuana.

Lab testing commissioned by AP shows some CBD vape products available at stores or online contain synthetic marijuana commonly known as K2 or spice. Unlike real CBD, which doesn’t have psychoactive qualities, synthetic marijuana gives an intense high.

Industry representatives acknowledge spiking is an issue, but say many companies are reputable.

But with drug enforcement authorities busy fighting the opioid epidemic, manufacturers of spiked products operate with impunity.
