OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Federal officials say the amount of water flowing down the lower Missouri River this year is approaching the 2011 record and a third round of flooding is expected this week after unusually heavy rains upstream.
Heavy rains dumped more than four times normal in parts of Montana, Nebraska, North and South Dakota last week. That triggered flood warnings and forced the forecast for how much water will flow down the Missouri River to jump to 58.8 million acre feet (17.92 million meters).
That will be second only to 2011’s 61 million acre feet (18.59 million meters).
The Corps of Engineers doesn’t expect major problems or threats to cities with the latest flooding — provided the temporary repairs made to levees since the spring hold up. But communities along the river are bracing for problems.

Rizzo has MRI
UNDATED (AP) _ Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo will wear a walking boot for the next five to seven days after an MRI showed he had a moderate lateral right ankle sprain.
Rizzo had to be helped off the field after suffering the injury while fielding a bunt in the third inning of Sunday’s 16-6 rout of the Pirates.
The Cubs can ill afford an extended loss of Rizzo as they continue to play without shortstop Javier Báez, who is out for the rest of the regular season with a hairline fracture of his left thumb.
Also around the majors:

Beckham stars in old home
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ It seemed like old times for Odell Beckham Jr. as he delivered a pair of highlight-reel catches at Met Life Stadium.
The former New York Giant had a long scoring reception and made a one-handed grab as the Cleveland Browns dumped the battered New York Jets, 23-3. Beckham took a slant pass and outran the Jets’ defenders all the way to the end zone for an 89-yard TD that put Cleveland up 23-3 with 3 ½ minutes left in the third quarter. His spectacular 33-yard, one-handed grab got Cleveland down to the Jets 4 and set up a field goal for the game’s first points.
Beckham finished with six catches for 161 yards as the Browns bounced back from their 30-point loss to the Titans in Week 1.
The 0-2 Jets finished the game with their third-string quarterback. Marcus Siemian had to leave the game after taking a hit in the second quarter. Big Ben out for season; Brees to undergo surgery
UNDATED (AP) _ Two of the NFL’s very best quarterbacks are dealing with injuries, with one learning that he’s done for the year.
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH’-lihs-bur-gur) is scheduled to undergo season-ending surgery on his aching right elbow, putting the offense in the hands of Mason Rudolph.
Roethlisberger shook his arm after a pair of passes with the Steelers driving late in the first half of yesterday’s loss to Seattle and watched the second half from the sideline.
Roethlisberger has been Pittsburgh’s starter since taking over for Tommy Maddox in Week 2 of the 2004 season as a rookie.
A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Saints quarterback Drew Brees (breez) is expected to be out six weeks after suffering a torn ligament in his right thumb during Sunday’s loss to the Rams.
Saints coach Sean Payton declined today to go into detail about Brees’ condition or even rule him out for this Sunday’s game in Seattle.
The injury occurred when the thumb hit the hand of on-rushing defensive lineman Aaron Donald on the follow-through of a throw in the first quarter.
Elsewhere in the NFL:
_ The NFL is expected to meet with the woman who has accused Antonio Brown of sexual assault in a lawsuit. It is not clear if the star receiver for the Patriots may play next week against the Jets. Brown has denied the allegations by his former trainer. Brown also is denying a second allegation made by a woman who said he exposed himself to her while she worked for him as an artist.
_ A person familiar with the negotiations says Dolphins defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick has been traded to the Steelers for a first-round draft pick in 2020. Fitzpatrick was unhappy about his role and received permission to seek a trade. He played free safety for Miami in Sunday’s 43-0 loss to New England and had six tackles and a fumble recovery.
_ Two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey has requested a trade following a sideline argument with Jaguars coach Doug Marrone. A person with knowledge of the situation says Ramsey’s agent asked the Jags to move the disgruntled defender following the heated exchange during the team’s 13-12 loss at Houston. Ramsey was upset that Marrone didn’t challenge DeAndre Hopkins’ first-down catch late in the first quarter of the game.
_ Adrian Phillips will be out for an extended period, dealing another blow to the Chargers secondary. The Chargers strong safety broke his right forearm while trying to tackle Detroit running back Kerryon Johnson during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 13-10 loss.
_ Coach Pat Shurmur has refused to say whether two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning will continue to start at quarterback for the winless Giants. Shurmur said his coaching staff will be discussing all areas of the team after the Giants fell to 0-2, dropping their home opener 28-14 to the Bills on Sunday.
_ Browns backup quarterback Drew Stanton has been placed on injured reserve. Stanton had been listed as No. 2 on Cleveland’s depth chart behind Baker Mayfield before injuring his knee during practice last week.
_ Browns defensive end Chris Smith will honor his late girlfriend by playing against the Jets. Petara Cordero was killed when she was struck by a car last week after she and Smith were in an accident. The 26-year-old exited Smith’s car and was standing on the highway roadside when she was hit by an oncoming car.
_ Adam Vinatieri isn’t going anywhere yet. Colts Coach Frank Reich says the NFL’s career scoring leader will remain his kicker despite early-season struggles. Vinatieri has missed five of his first eight kicks, including three extra points.
NHL-LABOR TALKS
NHL players stay with CBA, labor peace set to at least 2022
UNDATED (AP) _ The NHL is guaranteed labor peace for the next three seasons after the players association announced it is declining to trigger its opt-out clause.
Meetings between owners and players have been going on since February and increased in frequency in recent weeks. The league did not opt out of the CBA, with Commissioner Gary Bettman citing momentum and the importance of labor peace overriding the issues owners might have.
Player concerns include escrow payments, health care, Olympic participation and the definition of what qualifies as hockey-related revenue.
The last CBA was negotiated in 2013 and runs through the 2021-22 season.
Also around the NHL:
_ The Canucks have signed restricted free-agent right wing Brock Boeser (BEH’-sur) to a three-year contract worth more than $17.6 million. The former Penn State assistant football coach had been sentenced to 30 to 60 years after his 2012 jury conviction. DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Pakistan’s foreign minister says Prime Minister Imran Khan will travel to Saudi Arabia this week for an important meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the visit will take place on Thursday. He offered no further details in Tuesday’s televised remarks.
The announcement comes a day after the kingdom’s state-run Saudi Press Agency said the crown prince received a call from Khan who “expressed Pakistan’s support” for Saudi Arabia and “fully stand with the kingdom … in confronting these sabotage acts which threaten global economy” and the kingdom’s security.
Khan contacted the crown prince following Saturday’s attack on key Saudi oil sites that U.S. alleged Iran was responsible for. Iran denies the charge.
Saudi Arabia is a close Pakistani ally and a leading supplier of oil to Islamabad.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The leader of the main Arab faction in Israel’s parliament says his constituents “must be first-class voters on the way to becoming first-class citizens.”
Ayman Odeh cast his ballot on Tuesday in the northern city of Haifa and urged his fellow Arab citizens to vote in large numbers. He called Benjamin Netanyahu “an obsessive prime minister who is inciting against us.”
Netanyahu has alleged fraud in Arab voting areas and unsuccessfully pushed for legislation to place cameras in polling stations on election day. He also has accused his opponents of conspiring with Arab politicians to “steal” the election.
Turnout in the minority Arab sector was just below 50% in April. Many Arab voters boycotted the vote. Odeh has banded the various Arab parties together in a bid to boost turnout.
WASHINGTON (AP) — As they investigate President Donald Trump, Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee will hold their first official hearing in what they are calling an impeachment investigation.
Trump’s outspoken former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, is scheduled to appear Tuesday to discuss the special counsel’s report on Russia’s election interference.
Lewandowski is a close friend and supporter of the president and isn’t expected to elaborate much beyond what he told the special counsel’s investigators last year. Two former White House aides who were subpoenaed alongside Lewandowski won’t show up at all, on orders from the White House.
The hearing underscores what has been a central dilemma for House Democrats all year: They have promised to investigate Trump, aggressively, but the White House has blocked their oversight requests at most every turn.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have claimed a deadly attack in northern Afghanistan that targeted President Ashraf Ghani’s campaign rally, killing 24 people, and another attack, a Kabul explosion near the U.S. Embassy.
Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, says one suicide bomber targeted presidential guards who were protecting Ghani and the rally in northern Parwan province along with other members of the security forces.
Ghani was unhurt in the attack and it wasn’t immediately known if any of his guards were hurt in the explosion in Parwan on Tuesday.
Mujahid claims the suicide bomber in Kabul targeted an Afghan army base. Afghan officials have not yet provided details on that attack.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s not hard to find the materials to produce counterfeit marijuana vapes in California.
Packaging and hardware to produce authentic-looking copies of popular name brands are on sale in downtown Los Angeles, a short walk from police headquarters.
The ready availability of replica packaging helps explain an explosion in counterfeiting in California. And that counterfeiting could be contributing to an emerging health crisis with vape-related lung illnesses.
Once purchased, a counterfeiter can add untested, and possibly dangerous, marijuana oil to the empty cartridge. The oil is widely available in the state’s illegal market — even online.
The rip-offs have gotten so bad that Kingpen, a major legal brand, is planning a complete makeover of its packaging.
The counterfeit vapes look convincing to the untrained eye, some even carrying fake stickers to make it appear state approved.
