BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota has its first taste of winter-like weather.

KFGO reports the snow started in the southwest part of the state early Wednesday morning and continued through most of the day and night.
A wet snow rain mix occurred in Jamestown starting just after 11-p.m., on Wednesday.
Meteorologist Michael Hollan says the snow won’t stick around because temperatures are expected to rise above freezing for the next several days.

Bismarck (NDHP) The North Dakota Highway Patrol is participating in Trooper on a Train, Thursday, Oct. 3. A trooper will be present on an eastbound train beginning in Mandan.
The trooper will watch for railroad grade crossing violations as the train travels east from Mandan.
During a “Trooper on a Train” event, one trooper rides in the lead locomotive of the train as a spotter. This trooper observes traffic approaching the highway-rail grade crossings as the train proceeds down the tracks. Other troopers pace the train or are parked at specific locations along the tracks. When a motorist or pedestrian is observed violating the law, the trooper on the train radios one of the other troopers, who stop the motorist or pedestrian and explains the violation and issues a citation.
The purpose of this event is to increase public awareness of the potential dangers that exist at highway-railroad grade crossings by enforcing the traffic laws that pertain to these intersections. This event also allows troopers to see traffic from the train crew’s perspective.
The consequences for a driver failing to stop for an automatic railroad crossing signal, flagger, or train, or driving around a crossing gate or barrier results in a $50 fine and three points assessed to the license of the driver.
The NDHP’s ‘Trooper on a Train’ is one of many activities used to enhance public safety
and to spread awareness of related traffic laws to include the dangers of failing to stop for
oncoming trains or driving around railroad gates or barriers. DON’T RACE THE TRAIN!
WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — A 25-year-old man is accused of fatally stabbing another man following a fight at a Williston apartment building.
Police were called to the building about midnight Tuesday where they found the body of 24-year-old Ricky Waitman in a hallway. Witnesses told investigators Waitman and Rasul Jamal Ali Shaw Jr. were “hanging out” earlier that night and later argued in the hallway before the victim was stabbed.
Shaw was arrested at a nearby apartment. A complaint filed in Northwest District Court charges him with one felony count of murder.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A pipeline spill has released produced water into a small creek and a stock pond in western North Dakota.
The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality was notified of the spill, which happened Tuesday in Dunn County. The pipeline is part of a gathering system operated by Marathon Oil.
The spill happened about 1.5 miles northeast of Manning. Authorities don’t know what caused the leak.
An estimated 21,000 gallons of produced water were released, impacting the creek and stock pond within pastureland. The creek discharges into the Knife River, but no impacts have been detected in the river.
Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas development. State inspectors are checking the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota health officials say the number of confirmed cases of vaping-related illnesses is growing.
The state Department of Health says four cases have been confirmed and three others are probable cases. Previously there was one confirmed case and six probable cases.
State epidemiologist Clint Boots says North Dakota is taking its cues from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is coordinating the vaping illness investigation with the states. Boots declined to comment on whether the confirmed cases in North Dakota are linked to THC vaping, citing the ongoing investigation.
More than three-quarters of people nationally who have reported lung issues have said they used vape products with some form of THC.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) _ The Tampa Bay Rays are going to the American League Division Series after taking care of the Oakland Athletics in the wild-card game.

Braves’ Freeman and Acuña say they are ready for NLDS
UNDATED (AP) _ Freddie Freeman and Ronald Acuña (ah-KOON’-yah) Jr. say they are healthy for the Braves’ NL Division Series against the Cardinals.
Acuña’s status for Thursday’s Game 1 was the bigger concern. The 21-year-old outfielder has not played since Sept. 24 due to tightness in his left hip, ending his chase for a rare 40-40 season. He finished with 41 homers and 37 steals.
Freeman has struggled with bone spurs in his right elbow and at one point last month could not straighten his right arm. He returned for Atlanta’s final regular season series at the Mets.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republicans who carried out President Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998 are unanimous in urging caution and restraint as Congress embarks on yet another impeachment struggle, this time against President Donald Trump.
Clinton’s impeachment opened a new, angry chapter of American politics that strained Washington institutions that were stronger then than now. The Republicans who were part of it are warning against a rush to judgment against Trump.
Some have regrets. A few can’t talk about it. Others would do it all again.
Former congressman Bill McCollum of Florida says that too many people have made up their minds _ on both sides. He says people should wait before making a judgment on whether or not there’s even an impeachable offense until all the facts are on the table.
SAN BENITO, Texas (AP) — An Associated Press and FRONTLINE investigation finds the Trump administration has started shifting the caretaking of some migrant children toward the private sector and contractors instead of the largely religious-based nonprofit grantees that have long cared for the kids.
On a recent day at one for-profit shelter, a caregiver tried to soothe a toddler, offering him a sippy cup. The adult knew next to nothing about the little 3-year-old whose few baby words appeared to be Portuguese. Shelter staff had tried desperately to find his family, calling the Brazilian consulate and searching Facebook. Nearby, infants and babies in strollers were rolled through the building, pushed by workers in bright uniforms lettered “CHS,” short for Comprehensive Health Services, Inc., a government contractor whose parent company includes former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on its board.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraqi medical officials say 10 people were killed in southern Iraq overnight, raising the death toll since anti-government protests erupted across the country earlier this week to 19.
The officials say five people were killed in the southern city of Amara and five others in the city of Nasiriyah late on Wednesday night.
They say the five dead in Nasiryah were four civilians and a policeman.
The officials also said on Thursday that 45 people were wounded in Amara, some of whom suffered wounds from rubber bullets.
The anti-government protests began on Tuesday and spread to most areas in southern Iraq a day later.
HONG KONG (AP) — Police say criminal charges will be filed against the 18-year-old Hong Kong student who was the first victim of police gunfire in the months-long pro-democracy protests.
The shooting Tuesday on one of the most violent days of the demonstrations inflamed anger against police, who already have been accused of being heavy-handed against protesters.
The officer fired as the teen, Tsang Chi-kin, struck him with a metal rod. The government has said Tsang’s condition was stable after surgery.
A police statement said the youth will be charged Thursday afternoon with two counts of attacking police. It is unclear if he will appear in court.
Thousands of people rallied Wednesday to demand police accountability for the shooting.
DALLAS (AP) — The 10-year prison sentence given to a white Dallas police officer who shot and killed her black neighbor after saying she mistook his apartment for hers sparked anger but also moments of forgiveness.
The dead man’s brother and the black judge hugged the sobbing officer in a stunning courtroom scene Wednesday. The brother, 18-year-old Brandt Jean, told officer Amber Guyger that he loved her as a person and didn’t wish anything bad on her.
People outside the courtroom reacted angrily to Guyger’s sentence, believing she should’ve received more time for shooting the unarmed Botham Jean in his own living room. Dozens of demonstrators later marched through parts of downtown Dallas to protest the sentence.
Guyger, who was fired after the September 2018 shooting, was convicted of murder Tuesday.
