Valley City (CSi) The National Weather Service (NWS) has upgraded their flood projections for Valley City and the Sheyenne River.

The NWS predicts that as early as Friday this week Valley City will hit just under 18 feet flood stage. After discussions with Scott Tichy, Lead Park Ranger for the Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Ashtabula, city staff, and the Mayor, city officials on Monday said pending rainfall amounts and where the rain will fall, the city should wait until today (Monday) to react to the news from the NWS. After everyone has a better understanding on how much water the Sheyenne River system has received adjustments to the flood plan to protect the city for the new flood gage estimates will be made.

. These forecasts encompass the next 72 hours of expected
precipitation and thus the entire upcoming precipitation event
from Sunday night through Monday night. The combination of recent
snowmelt and rainfall, dam releases, and expected additional rainfall
will cause significant rises on the Sheyenne and Maple
Rivers in North Dakota by the middle of the week. There is still
quite a bit of uncertainty as to how much rain will fall and where
the heaviest amounts will occur, which brings lingering uncertainty
in the river forecasts and crests.

This forecast is for a 7-day period…the highest stage
indicated may not reflect the crest for this event.

Forecasts are updated daily and stage values will change
as new weather and river information is used.

River forecasts use 24 hours of forecast precipitation
between April 1st and October 1st, and 48 hours otherwise.
However, depending on the situation, they may include
precipitation expected through the next 72 hours.
