Spiritwood  (Midwest AgEnergy) – Midwest AgEnergy Group (MAG), the parent company to ethanol biorefineries, Blue Flint, near Underwood and Dakota Spirit, near Spiritwood, announced it is taking the next step in a feasibility level study on Carbon Capture and Storage.

The Blue Flint Ethanol facility near Underwood, ND purchases about 25 million bushels of corn and produces over 70 million gallons of ethanol along with about 200,000 tons of dry distillers grains each year. It also produces about 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The company is investigating the potential to capture the CO2 from the plant and safely sequester it from the atmosphere. Geologic Storage is the process of injecting CO2 captured from an industrial or energy-related source into deep subsurface rock formations for long-term storage.

This is part of a process frequently referred to as “carbon capture and storage” or CCS. Preventing CO2 from entering the atmosphere will decrease the carbon intensity of ethanol fuel produced at the facility. The project could also create federal income tax credits for investors.

Bismarck  (DSU) – During a special State Board of Higher Education meeting held via teleconference Thursday, Stephen D. Easton, J.D., was named interim president of Dickinson State University.

Easton has a strong personal connection to Dickinson State University. Easton, who graduated summa cum laude from DSU in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Accounting, and a minor in political science, was the third generation of his family to choose Dickinson State. After earning his undergraduate degree at DSU, Easton enrolled in Stanford Law School where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1983.

Easton practiced law for more than 20 years before returning to higher education as a professor and administrator.

Washington (Sen. Cramer’s Office)   – The U.S. Senate through a Unanimous Consent (UC) request by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) Thursday passed S.2099, the “White Horse Hill National Game Preserve Designation Act,” a bill Senator Cramer introduced to rename the National Game Preserve within the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation known as “Sullys Hill” to “White Horse Hill,” its traditional Dakota name. This is the first piece of legislation written by Senator Cramer to pass the Senate.

“With all the issues the federal government faces, this may seem small, but it is no small issue to the people of Spirit Lake,”  Senator Cramer said in remarks on the Senate Floor. “This mistake has taken over 100 years to correct. I am sorry for that, but I am grateful my colleagues are joining us now to correct it.”

Senator John Hoeven, the bill’s original cosponsor and chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, also offered his support:

“Now that the Senate has approved this legislation, we are one step closer to reinstating the traditional Dakota name of White Horse Hill, which honors the heritage of the Spirit Lake Tribe and this area.”

Sullys Hill was named in 1904 after General Sully, a Civil War and the Indian Wars military officer who gained notoriety for committing several massacres against Native Americans, including one of the greatest massacres in North Dakota’s history. Many descendants of his victims live on the land surrounding the hill.

The North Dakota congressional delegation – with the support of  Governor Doug Burgum  and Tourism Director Sara Otte Coleman – introduced this legislation in July after the tribe requested the hill return to its historic Dakota name. The Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, which Senator Cramer sits on, advanced this legislation at the end of September. There, Senator Cramer delivered remarks on the importance of this legislation, as did EPW Ranking Member Tom Carper (D-DE).

“This action by our committee will help to ensure that the Spirit Lake Tribe’s story of the white stallion will be ingrained in our Nation’s history for years to come,” said Ranking Member Carper. “Quite simply, this is the right thing to do, and I want to thank Senator Cramer for his work.”

Update….

Fargo, N.D. (Valley News Live) An officer is injured and a suspect is in custody after shooting at police in downtown Fargo.

Fargo Police were called to the area by the Radisson Hotel and the old Police Station around 5th St. N. and 2nd Ave. N. for reports of a man with a gun around 4 Friday morning.

When officers arrived, the suspect, 54-year-old Henry Aiken, fired his gun toward them and then also shot into the Radisson lobby. Police say Aiken had a revolver with a laser attached.

Aiken then went into the hotel lobby where he was quickly arrested at gunpoint.

During that time, Officer Matt Ysteboe with Fargo Police was readying his patrol rifle and accidentally fired it, injuring his hand.

Police set up a perimeter blocking much of downtown for a couple of hours while they investigated.

Aiken faces a charge of aggravated reckless endangerment.

Officer Matt Ysteboe was taken to the hospital but is expected to be ok.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police and sheriff’s deputies have responded to gunfire in downtown Fargo.

KFGO reports a two-block radius around the Radisson Hotel is blocked off early Friday morning. A witness saw police bring one man out of the hotel in handcuffs and place him in a squad car.

Police say that there is “no active threat to the community.” No other details were immediately available.

Valley News Live reports….

Fargo Police said they’re hosting a press conference at 9 a.m. at their 25th Street North location regarding the call for shots fired in the downtown Fargo area.

Police say they do hope that by 7 a.m. the perimeter set up around 5th Street North and 2nd and 3rd Avenue will be open. Access for workers in the area has been granted on a case by case basis, Fargo Police posted to their Facebook page.

Updates will be posted at CSiNewsNow.com

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Police have arrested a suspect in the killing of a Fargo man in a downtown apartment building.

KFGO radio reports that 43-year old Darrell Clinton Peterson is being held in the Cass County Jail on a felony murder charge in the death of 64-year-old Duane Darling, of Fargo.

Police say officers were called to the Pioneer Manor apartments shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday and discovered Darling bleeding from the head. He died later at a local hospital.

Authorities say a tip led officers to another apartment where Peterson was eventually taken into custody. Police say he was arrested after they reviewed evidence and Peterson’s statements during questioning.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s new Ethics Commission has rejected its second complaint.

The five-member board voted unanimously Thursday to “disregard” the complaint, citing a lack of jurisdiction.

Last month the board declined to accept its first complaint, also citing jurisdiction. Chairman Ron Goodman has declined to provide the complaints to The Bismarck Tribune. Complaints are confidential by state law unless the accused consents to disclosure.

The panel oversees the conduct of legislators, state officials, political candidates and lobbyists. Voters approved establishing the commission last year after the Republican-led Legislature rebuffed repeated attempts for such a panel in the past.

The commission still lacks office space, staff and a website.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State officials have given an estimate on how much oil was spilled from a pipeline leak in Williams County last month.

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality says an estimated 12,432 gallons of oil leaked from a pipeline operated by Hiland Crude about a mile northeast of McGregor on Oct. 17. The department says the oil leaked onto cropland.

Department staff have inspected the site and say they will continue to monitor remediation.

Bismarck (NDNG) – Members of the North Dakota National Guard and the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services will conduct a blizzard response exercise at Fraine Barracks in Bismarck this weekend. The agencies regularly participate in emergency response exercise scenarios to validate and refine statewide plans and capabilities. Both agencies are administered by the N.D. Office of the Adjutant General.

About 45 Soldiers and Airmen from the Guard’s Domestic Operations Section will work from the organization’s Joint Operations Center (JOC) exercising command and control for military response resources during the hypothetical blizzard response. The JOC serves as a nexus for information sharing, as well as personnel and equipment tracking, during a domestic emergency.

When activated by the governor in response to requests through the N.D. Department of Emergency Services, the N.D. National Guard serves as the first military responders during a natural disaster or emergency in the state.

NFL THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL…

UNDATED (AP) — The Cleveland Browns gave the type of performance that could have their fans thinking about the postseason once again.

Baker Mayfield threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Browns ended the Pittsburgh Steelers’ four-game winning streak, 21-7. Mayfield was 17 of 32 passing for 193 yards and no interceptions to help Cleveland win their second straight and improve to 4-6.

Nick Chubb had 92 yards rushing for the Browns, who intercepted Mason Rudolph four times and limited Pittsburgh to 236 total yards.

The game ended in a brawl after Cleveland defense end Myles Garrett ripped off Rudolph’s helmet and hit him in the head with it in the final seconds. Garrett faces a likely suspension for his actions, and Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey will likely be disciplined for kicking Garrett in the head.

Rudolph was just 23 of 44 for 221 yards, including a third-quarter TD to Jaylen Samuels.

Pittsburgh finished the game without Juju Smith-Schuster because of a concussion.

Browns WR Callaway waived amid report of pending suspension

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that wide receiver Antonio Callaway is facing a possible 10-game league suspension for another drug violation.

Callaway served a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse program earlier this season and was benched by Cleveland coach Freddie Kitchens for Sunday’s game against Buffalo because he didn’t get to FirstEnergy Stadium on time.

The Browns released Callaway hours before their game Thursday against the Steelers.

— The NFL says 11 teams, including the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos, have signed up to attend Colin Kaepernick’s (KAP’-ur-nihks) workout in Atlanta on Saturday. The league said more teams are expected to attend the exiled quarterback’s audition and that former NFL head coach Hue Jackson will lead the drills. Kaepernick hasn’t played since 2016 when he helped start a wave of protests about social and racial injustice by kneeling during the national anthem.

Wiseman withdraws lawsuit

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Freshman James Wiseman has withdrawn his lawsuit against the NCAA and Memphis while officials work to resolve the case.

Wiseman will be allowed to practice with the team, although the university has declared him ineligible. The NCAA had informed Memphis that Wiseman was likely ineligible for receiving what it deemed to be impermissible benefits from Penny Hardaway before the former NBA star became Memphis’ coach.

The university says it is immediately applying for Wiseman to be reinstated.

The Lightning’s only other nine-goal game occurred during the 2003-04 season against the Penguins. Tampa Bay also matched a club mark with five power-play goals.

NHL-PENGUINS-CROSBY

Crosby out 6 weeks after core surgery

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Penguins star Sidney Crosby will be out at least six weeks after what the team said was a successful core muscle injury repair Thursday.

General manager Jim Rutherford says the procedure was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia.

The 32-year-old Crosby leads the team in scoring with five goals and 12 assists in 17 games despite dealing with a sports hernia since training camp.

MILITARY ACADEMIES-ATHLETES

US military academy athletes can now delay service, go pro

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Mark Esper has issued new guidelines that will allow athletes attending the nation’s military academies to seek waivers to delay their service and play professional sports immediately upon their graduation.

A memo signed by Esper requires athletes going pro to get approval from the defense secretary. It says they must eventually fulfill their military obligation or repay the cost of their college education. The memo was obtained by The Associated Press.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House will hear from a singular witness Friday in the Trump impeachment hearings: Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine who was targeted by the president’s allies in a “smear” campaign now central to the probe.

The career diplomat, who served both Republican and Democratic presidents, is expected to relay her striking story of being suddenly recalled by Donald Trump and told to “watch my back.” It was all part of a swiftly developing series of events that sounded alarms about the White House’s shadow foreign policy.

Friday is the second day of public hearings to consider removing America’s 45th president. Democrats and Republicans are hardening their messages to voters as they try to sway voter opinion amid a deeply polarized public.

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine why a 16-year-old suspect pulled a gun at a Los Angeles-area high school campus, killing two students and wounding three before turning the gun on himself.

The boy is hospitalized in critical condition after Thursday morning’s attack at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, which took place on the boy’s 16th birthday.

Authorities say the boy pulled the gun from his backpack and began shooting students apparently at random in an attack that lasted just 16 seconds.

The FBI says it doesn’t appear the boy was motivated by ideology or terrorism and he seems to have acted alone.

Friends and neighbors say the boy showed no previous signs of violence. They call him a bright, quiet teen involved with the Boy Scouts and other activities.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel says it has completed a series of airstrikes on targets linked to the Islamic Jihad militant group in Gaza after rocket fire that rattled a day-old truce.

The military statement early on Friday indicates that Israel is willing to abide by the cease-fire if there are no additional rocket attacks.

The statement says Israel struck a military compound, a rocket-manufacturing site and a militant headquarters in the town of Khan Younis.

The airstrikes came after a barrage of rockets late Thursday. There were no immediate reports of casualties on either side.

It’s unclear whether the fighting would continue. The unofficial cease-fire that began early Thursday ended a two-day escalation triggered by Israel’s targeted killing of an Islamic Jihad commander.

The fighting killed 34 Palestinians, including 16 civilians.

WASHINGTON (AP) — One of former President Barack Obama’s close friends and political allies is running for president.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick announced his campaign on Thursday. Obama and Patrick spoke this week, but the former president is expected to stay neutral in the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination.

Although Obama has ties to several candidates, most notably Joe Biden, his ties to Patrick are unique. The two men were friends well before the White House years and have bonded over shared personal experiences and a strikingly similar approach to politics.

Obama advisers say there are currently no plans for the former president to endorse in the Democratic primary race, though he’s met with most of the major candidates and is said to be following the primary campaign closely.
