A strong, impactful winter storm will move across the
Great Plains into the Upper Midwest this upcoming weekend. This
storm may impact the local area, but it remains far from certain at
this point. Southern North Dakota has higher chances of seeing
significant impacts.

If this storm takes a more northerly track like the current ECMWF,

most of western and central North Dakota would see heavy snow and

strong winds, causing significant travel impacts. A more southerly

track closer to that of the GFS/GEFS could still bring heavy snow

and strong winds to southern parts of the state, but this portion of

the storm system could almost miss us completely.

Jamestown  (JRMC) — Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is proud to announce that its own, Dane Grebel, JRMC Support Services manager and emergency preparedness manager, recently completed a training offered by the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP), in Anniston, Ala.

Grebel attended the Healthcare Leadership for Mass Casualty Incidents, a four-day course addressing disaster preparedness at the facility and system levels. Leaders within healthcare need to be prepared for any incident that may result in multiple casualties – natural disasters, releases of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and or explosives, or a disease outbreak resulting in an epidemic or pandemic.

Throughout the course, leaders focused on how to make critical decisions regarding all-hazards disaster emergency preparedness activities. They also learned essential disaster-planning response and recovery functions through lectures and then applied during tabletop exercises and a two-day functional exercise.

Grebel, says, “I have completed two different trainings at the CDP; Hospital Emergency Response Training for Mass Casualty Incidents and Healthcare Leadership for Mass Casualty Incidents.   The CDP is able to replicate real-world incidents and then escalate the incident to the point of breakdown, failure and ultimately success. The opportunity to learn and practice with the experts from the CDP was an amazing experience. I’m grateful to take what I have learned and apply it to our own emergency operations plans at JRMC.”

A Valley City native, Grebel joined the JRMC team in 2007 as the Environmental & Linen Services supervisor. He became manager in 2011 and added emergency management to his duties in 2018.

The CDP is operated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and is the only federally chartered Weapons of Mass Destruction training facility in the nation.

Jamestown (JRMC) — Jamestown Regional Medical Center (JRMC) is hosting a blood drive on Thursday, Dec. 5 to help save lives.
The blood drive is open to the community from 9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. in JRMC Conference Room ABC, located in the lower level.
JRMC Clinical Service Assistant Katie Mittleider says the blood drive is a great event for the community and staff.

She says, “As professionals in the healthcare industry, we see how important it is to have donor blood readily available. That’s why we host blood drives every year.”
People can donate blood up to three times each year.
The JRMC blood drive collects whole blood. During a whole blood donation, nearly 500 ml of blood is collected from the donor and then separated later into components like red cells, plasma and platelets. These are used for patient transfusions.

Mittleider adds,“This will be our 16th time holding a blood drive since 2011 at the Jamestown Regional Medical Center. We welcome the opportunity to allow Vitalant into our facility to help us hold the blood drive. Vitalant provides our facility with red cells, platelets and plasma for transfusions.”

To date, the JRMC blood drive alone has collected 979 products of blood for Vitalant. As the sole provider of blood products for 68 area hospitals, Vitalant’s goal is to have at least 250 volunteers each day donate blood.

While most adults can donate blood, some individuals are ineligible.
Certain diseases, like AIDS and hepatitis, prevent people from donating.
Others who are ineligible include people who:
· have used needles to take nonprescription drugs
· have had syphilis or gonorrhea in the past 12 months
· have had the Ebola virus disease or infection

To donate blood and schedule an appointment or for donor eligibility, call (701) 952-4814 or go to www.bloodhero.com and use JRMC as the code.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A 13-year police veteran has been sworn in as the chief of police in Lincoln.

The Bismarck Tribune reports Robyn Krile was selected Thursday from a field of four candidates to fill the position.

Krile had served as interim police chief in Lincoln since September, when then-chief Greg Leveling was fired for policy violations and performance issues.

Krile was hired by the Bismarck Police Department in 2004 and was promoted to sergeant in 2013. She was fired in 2017, shortly after filing a gender discrimination complaint with the state.

She has since sued in federal court, seeking damages for pain and suffering, lost pay and other reasons.

The city of Bismarck is seeking to have the case dismissed.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota doctor who won a $1.2 million jury award against a Bismarck clinic in a retaliation case should collect more than $2.1 million after a federal judge settled post-trial disputes.

Dr. Robert Roswick sued Mid Dakota Clinic in 2017 claiming he was unjustly disciplined for publicly opposing the firing of an Indian American physician. A jury ruled the clinic had retaliated against him and awarded him lost wages and benefits.

The Bismarck Tribune reports the updated amount comes from U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery’s decision to award Roswick additional money for lost future earnings, attorney fees and costs, interest on back pay and interest on the jury award from the date of judgment until payment is made.

Mid Dakota Clinic said in a statement it disagrees with the decision and is considering its next steps.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Former Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan was enjoying the success of his fourth book when he found the subject of his next one waiting right on his Facebook page.

It was a message from Tamara DeMaris, who first caught Dorgan’s attention in 1990 after her teary-eyed portrait as a 5-year-old appeared along with a newspaper story on the abuse of foster home children on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation.

Nearly three decades later, after finding a speech Dorgan gave about her, DeMaris contacted the senator from North Dakota and said she was ready to tell her story. It’s the focal point of his book “The Girl in the Photograph.”

The book ties DeMaris’ difficult journey to the struggles of Native Americans and offers possible solutions. Dorgan says it’s been a hard life but DeMaris has found some stability.

Robinson is a native of Brooklyn Center, Minn. He earned an exercise science degree from MSUM in 2013, along with minors in coaching and strength and conditioning. Women’s Basketball…

Saturday

Northwestern, IA  78  Jamestown  51

ORANGE CITY, Iowa– The University of Jamestown women’s basketball team turned the ball over a season-high 29 times, leading to 33 points for No. 11 Northwestern College as the Red Raiders defeated the Jimmies 78-51 Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown (6-2 overall, 2-1 Great Plains Athletic Conference is at Mount Marty (S.D.) College Monday for a 6 p.m. start.

A busy first quarter saw four ties and seven lead changes and despite shooting 1-for-10 from three-point range, Northwestern led 18-13.

The Red Raiders opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run, but UJ countered with a 10-0 run of their own to trail 28-25 with three minutes left before the half. Northwestern finished the quarter with a 10-3 run and led 38-8 at the break.

UJ shot just under 50 percent (5-for-11) in the third quarter, but eight turnovers combined with a 9-for-16 shooting performance by Northwestern saw the home team’s lead grow to 63-45 entering the fourth quarter.

Jamestown was ice cold from the field in the final ten minutes, making just 2-of-17 shot attempts and 2-of-9 free throw attempts. The Jimmies turned the ball over two fewer times (9-7) than the Red Raiders in the fourth, but the lead was too much to overcome.

Grace Benz (SO/Steele, ND) was the leading scorer for UJ with 10 points off the bench. She also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. Courtney Mosloski (SR/Fairmont, MN) finished with nine points and eight boards. Kia Tower (FR/Bigfork, MN), Mackensi Higlin (JR/Mandan, ND), and Noelle Josephson (SO/Ramsey, MN) all recorded two assists and Josephson had two steals.

Devyn Kemble was one of three Red Raiders (7-1, 3-1 GPAC) in double figures, leading the way with a game-high 15 points. Bre Schuiteman added 13 points and seven rebounds while Sammy Blum had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Jamestown (7-3 overall, 1-2 Great Plains Athletic Conference) is at Mount Marty (S.D.) College at 8 p.m. on Monday.

The Jimmies led 21-17 following a Terrell Alfred (SR/Orlando, FL) basket at the 12:17 mark, but Northwestern got a pair of three-pointers by Christian Korver and a bucket by Trent Hilbrands to go ahead 25-21 with 10:43 in the first half.

UJ was forced to play from behind after the Red Raiders closed the half with 12 of the final 17 points and a 57-47 advantage at the break.

Northwestern’s biggest lead of the second half came on Jay Small’s three-pointer that made it 64-51 with 16:09 in the game. Jamestown went on a 15-2 run over the next 3:39 to tie the game at 66 after Jack Talley (JR/Sioux Falls, SD) sank a pair of free throws.

The Jimmies continued to whittle away at the Red Raider lead and got within a single point at 73-72 at the 9:55 mark. Another Northwestern run, this time a 10-4 stretch, pushed the lead back to seven, and UJ could only get as close as two points the rest of the way. The Red Raiders scored 11 of 13 points in a 2:33 span to effectively put the game out of reach.

Talley led UJ with 21 points and added seven rebounds. In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Mark Esper has fired the secretary of the Navy in connection with the controversy over a SEAL whose case has been championed by President Donald Trump.

A Pentagon spokesman says in a statement Sunday that Esper has lost trust and confidence in Navy Secretary Richard Spencer “regarding his lack of candor” over conversations with the White House involving the handling of the SEAL case.

Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman says Spencer submitted his resignation at Esper’s request. Esper has also recommended to Trump a replacement.

HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong police are planning to send a team of negotiators into a university campus to coax a small group of protesters entrapped inside for over a week to surrender.

The move came after pro-democracy politicians, who won a landslide victory in Sunday’s district council elections, called for an end to the police siege at the Polytechnic University to let the protesters leave.

Some 1,100 protesters have surrendered after occupying the campus following intense clashes with police, but around 30 others are believed to still be hiding in the vast campus to avoid arrest.

District police officer Ho Yun-sing said Monday that a team of police negotiators, medical workers and independent mediators will enter the campus to find the holdouts amid concerns over their health and mental condition.

He said the aim is to persuade the protesters to leave, and not to arrest them.

NEW YORK (AP) — Charles Schwab is buying rival TD Ameritrade for $26 billion, a blockbuster deal accelerated by massive disruption in the online brokerage industry.

Competitive pressure has already forced brokerages to make it free for customers to trade U.S. stocks online, and Schwab’s proposal would combine two of the biggest players in the industry.

The tie-up announced Monday would create a company so big, however, that it may draw sharp scrutiny from antitrust regulators, analysts say. Together the companies would have more than $5 trillion in client assets.

By itself, Schwab may control close to half the market for acting as a custodian for money managed by registered investment advisers, for example, while TD Ameritrade may control about 15% to 20%, according to Kyle Voigt, an analyst with Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Add ice cellars to the list of environmental victims in Alaska’s Native whaling villages.

The largely indigenous, far-north communities have used the underground food caches for generations. The cellars are dug like chambers into the underground permafrost, typically reachable through long shafts at the surface.

But they’ve been rendered unreliable in a new environment.

In response, one village built a new community cellar incorporating modern technology. Others are compensating with walk-in freezers.

Locals and researchers say the problem has been building for decades as a warming climate touches multiple facets of life, including thawing permafrost and shorter periods of coastal ice that provides protection from powerful storms.

One recent study concluded, however, that while a changing climate has great potential to affect ice cellars, there are other factors, including soil conditions and urban development.
