Confidence is increasing that a potentially significant winter
storm will impact much of western and central North Dakota this
holiday weekend. Light snow, possibly mixed with light freezing
rain, is forecast to develop across much of the area Thanksgiving
afternoon and evening, continuing through Friday afternoon. On
Friday night, heavy snow is forecast to spread across the area,
lasting through Saturday. Winds are also expected to become strong
on Saturday, with blizzard conditions possible. While confidence
in this storm impacting western and central North Dakota is
increasing, exact details remain uncertain. There is a greater
likelihood that southern parts of the state will see the worst
impacts from this storm.

Be prepared for the possibility of significant winter weather
impacts this weekend. Travel may become very hazardous across the
region. Keep up to date on the latest forecast information at
www.weather.gov/bismarck, and here at CSiNewsNow.com and on CSi Cable 2.

Update….

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be stepping down releases from Jamestown and Pipestem Dams to expected winter levels by Dec. 4, 2019.

Updated river ice forecasts indicate ice formation is likely in the LaMoure area in early December.  To mitigate the risk of freeze-up ice jams or other ice-related flooding, combined releases from the dams will be reduced by 200 cubic feet per second each day to expected winter levels.  The target combined release rate is 650 cfs.

On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2 Pastor Tom Eckstein said the meal will be served from 11-a.m., to 1-p.m., with home delivery available.  There is no charge.

Pastor Eckstein said the Thanksgiving Day meal was first served  in 1971 at The Pantry Café in Jamestown when church member the late, Fritz Buegle saw a need to provide the community a Thanksgiving meal.  About 40 meals were served that first year, and as the dinner participants grew the meal was move to larger accommodations at Concordia Lutheran Church.

Last year 300 meals were served at the church and another 300 were home delivered, and more is expected this year.

He pointed out that over 25 turkeys will be baked at the University of Jamestown kitchen and delivered to the church, where more volunteers will prepare the turkeys on Wednesday.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — There will be a runoff election for a new North Dakota Supreme Court chief justice.

None of the three justices running to lead the state’s high court received the majority votes necessary on Monday to clinch the position.

Justices Lisa Fair McEvers and Jon Jensen were the top vote-getters, followed by Daniel Crothers.

McEvers and Jensen are still in the running.

The ballots were cast by the state’s 52 district court judges and each of the five justices on the high court. They will now recast their votes, which will be tallied in early December.

The chief justice position was left open after 86-year-old Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle announced in September he would not seek reappointment to the top post when his term expires at the end of the year.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — South Central District Judge Gail Hagerty says she is resigning in March after more than three decades behind the bench.

Hagerty sent a letter to Gov. Doug Burgum and state Supreme Court Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle Monday to inform them she plans to step down March 16. Hagerty says she’s not retiring and plans to pursue a call to ordained ministry.

The Bismarck Tribune says Hagerty has been a judge in the state’s busiest district since January 1995 and presiding judge in the district since 2004.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An 18-week-old turkey got an official Thanksgiving pardon from North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum at the state Capitol.

“Lilly” was brought to the Capitol on Monday by North Dakota Turkey Federation President David Rude. He says the 18-pound turkey was raised on organic feed at his farm near Tolna.

As part of the annual tradition, the governor pardoned the bird from being Thanksgiving dinner.

The annual event also benefits charity. The Turkey Federation is donating a dozen frozen turkeys each to the Heaven’s Helpers Soup Café and the Abused Adult Resource Center, both in Bismarck.

North Dakota isn’t a big turkey producer. Nine farms in the state produce about a million birds each year.

— A person familiar with the situation says the White Sox have placed reigning Gold Glove second baseman Yolmer Sánchez on outright waivers rather than face the prospect of paying him $6 million next year. The 27-year-old Sánchez had a .987 fielding percentage to earn his first Gold Glove last season, but he hit only .252 with two home runs, 20 doubles and 43 RBIs in 149 games.

— Nestor Cortes Jr. has been traded by the Yankees to Seattle for $28,300 in international signing bonus pool allocation, the remainder of what the Mariners had available to deal. The 25-year-old left-hander was 5-1 with a 5.67 ERA in 32 relief appearances and one start this year.

OLYMPICS-RUSSIAN DOPING

WADA panel recommends neutral status for Russia at Olympics

MONTREAL (AP) — A key World Anti-Doping Agency panel has recommended that Russian athletes be forced to compete as neutrals at next year’s Olympics in Tokyo and other major events. The Russian foreign minister says the move is one more Western effort to sideline Russia.

WADA’s compliance review committee has recommended a four-year ban on hosting major events in Russia and a ban for the same period on flying the Russian flag at major competitions.

The WADA executive committee will rule on the recommendations on Dec. 9.

That follows a lengthy investigation into lab data handed over by Russia in January.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge has ordered former White House counsel Donald McGahn to appear before Congress in a setback to President Donald Trump’s effort to keep his top aides from testifying.

The outcome could lead to renewed efforts by House Democrats to compel testimony from other high-ranking officials, including former national security adviser John Bolton.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson ruled Monday in a lawsuit filed by the House Judiciary Committee.

McGahn was a star witness in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation and Democrats wanted to question McGahn about possible obstruction of justice by Trump. That was months before the House started an impeachment inquiry into Trump’s effort to get Ukraine to announce an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden.

An appeal is likely.

DENVER (AP) — Thanksgiving travel is an ordeal under the best of circumstances, and a one-two punch of bad weather threatens to make it even more exhausting.

Airlines prepared to deal Tuesday with a forecast for heavy snow in Denver, canceling flights ahead of time and offering customers a chance to reschedule without racking up standard ticket-change fees.

As that front moves through the Great Lakes and the Northeast later in the week, forecasters say another storm will crash into the West Coast, possibly fouling flights and making driving treacherous.

The AAA auto club says more than 55 million people will travel at least 50 miles (81 kilometers) from home over Thanksgiving, and the Transportation Safety Administration is predicting record numbers at airports.

HONG KONG (AP) — Faculty teams searching through Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University have found a young woman in weak condition and believe there aren’t likely to be any other anti-government protesters still hiding in the campus.

University Vice President Alexander Wai says there were no signs of any other protesters in an extensive search Tuesday. He said he can’t rule out the possibility that some may still be hiding in the vast campus, but that “the possibility is not very high.”

Protesters used the university as a base for clashes with police outside.

Wai said the female, who is over 18 and not a student at the university, has been given medical care and counselors are trying to coax her to surrender.

He said the university will jointly decide with police on the next step. If they decide there are no more protesters holding out, he said the campus will next be cleared of dangerous materials including explosives.

TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania’s Defense Ministry says five more bodies have been recovered following a powerful earthquake, bringing the death toll to 14.

The Health Ministry is reporting that around 600 people have been injured, some who are still in very serious condition.

About 400 soldiers are putting up tents in two towns to shelter people with damaged houses.

Live TV footage showed people cheering when a child was found alive in a collapsed building in the town of Durres where a body had been found earlier.
