Bismarck (NDHP) Ninety-two people have lost their lives in traffic crashes on North Dakota’s roads this year. Right of way, excessive speed, and drug and alcohol impairment continue to be the primary contributing factors in these fatal crashes. Of these fatalities, 47.8 percent were not wearing a safety belt.
During the month of December, the North Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting a high visibility enforcement campaign that focuses on speed, right of way, impairment, distracted driving, and seat belt violations.
Overtime hours have been made available for troopers to work during this campaign.
The goal of the campaign is to have an increased patrol presence on roadways, encouraging drivers to voluntarily comply with traffic laws.

NEW SALEM, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say a 59-year-old man is dead after a house fire in New Salem. The Morton County Sheriff’s Office was called about a house explosion shortly before noon last Thursday. Authorities found the body of Richard Doll and some parts of the house damaged by smoke and fire. The Fire Department inspected the home and determined there was no explosion but there had been a fire. The sheriff’s office is investigating along with the North Dakota fire marshal, but no foul play is suspected in the death.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota county on Monday voted to accept no more than 25 refugees next year, after initially signaling it would be the first to ban them since President Donald Trump ordered that states and counties should have the power to do so. The 3-2 vote by the Burleigh County Commission, which included a provision for further study of the issue, came a week after a vote was postponed when the audience overflowed the county’s usual meeting space. If commissioners had voted no, refugee resettlement groups say they believe Burleigh _ home to about 95,000 people and the capital city of Bismarck _ would have been be the first local government to do since Trump’s executive order in September.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for burning down a vacant church on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Twenty-three-year-old Rode Wayne Vocu pleaded guilty to arson in the April fire that destroyed the Memorial Congregational Church near White Shield. The church was built in 1926 in Elbowoods and moved as floodwaters from construction of the Garrison Dam approached. His federal public defender says Vocu has accepted responsibility for the fire, but because of mental health and substance abuse issues he can’t recall what happened the day the church burned.
WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — A vibration in an oil tank apparently caused a bolt to come off and spill more than 20,000 gallons of oil in western North Dakota. The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division says the spill happened Saturday at a well about 6 miles west of Watford City. Newfield Production Co. reported Sunday that the oil was released after an equipment failure at the location. All of the spilled oil has been recovered. The spill was contained by dikes. A state inspector has been to the site and will continue to monitor the cleanup and remediation.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — New survey results about the health behavior of North Dakota’s high school students shows they’re drinking less and using less tobacco, but more young people are having extended periods of feeling sad or hopeless. State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler said Monday fewer high school students reported being bullied at school, either electronically or personally. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey was developed in 1990 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is given in the spring of odd-numbered years to students in grades 7-8 and 9-12.

NFL-MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL…
Eagles knock off Giants in OT
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles own a share of first-place in the NFC East after erasing a 17-3 halftime deficit against the lowly New York Giants.
Carson Wentz tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz in overtime to lead the Eagles to a 23-17 win over the Giants. Wentz threw for 325 yards and a pair of TDs, including a 5-yard toss to Ertz to tie it at 17-17 with 1:53 left in the fourth quarter.
Ertz racked up 91 yards on nine receptions for the Eagles, who played the second half without receiver Alshon Jeffery because of a foot injury.
Eli Manning looked good in the second quarter of his first start since Week 2, leading three scoring drives that put New York ahead by two touchdowns. Manning finished 15 of 30 for 203 yards, but he couldn’t prevent the 2-11 Giants from suffering their team record-tying ninth straight loss.
The 6-7 Eagles snapped a three-game losing streak and moved into a first-place tie with Dallas. Philadelphia captures the division if it wins its final three games, including a matchup with Dallas in Week 16.

(AP) — Bears linebacker Roquan Smith is out for the season, according to coach Matt Nagy. Smith suffered a torn pectoral muscle in Sunday’s win over the Cowboys.
Pats say videotaping of Bengals wasn’t intentional
UNDATED (AP) — The New England Patriots have acknowledged that a video crew working for the team shot the Cincinnati Bengals sideline during Sunday’s game at Cleveland. Any videotaping of a sideline by another team is a violation of league rules that echoed the team’s 2007 Spygate scandal.
The Patriots said on their website that a three-person crew for a web series titled “Do Your Job” “inappropriately filmed the field from the press box” as part of a feature on the scouting department. The filming took place “without specific knowledge of league rules,” according to the team statement.
The Pats also said that while it was granted credentials for the crew from the Browns, their failure to inform the Bengals and the NFL was an unintended oversight. When confronted, the team said the crew “immediately turned over all footage to the league and cooperated fully.”
In other NFL news:
— The Dallas Cowboys have waived struggling kicker Brett Maher and replaced him with eight-year veteran Kai Forbath. Maher is the only kicker in NFL history with three field goals of at least 60 yards. But the Cowboys couldn’t count on him for the shorter ones that are often more critical.

NBA-ROCKETS-PROTEST
Rockets lose protest
NEW YORK (AP) — The Houston Rockets won’t get a do-over after officials wrongly disallowed a slam dunk by James Harden in a double-overtime loss to the Spurs.
The NBA has denied the Rockets’ protest of last Tuesday’s game, which the Spurs won 135-133. A successful protest would result in part of the game being replayed. The league said it has disciplined the officials who got the call wrong and botched the aftermath by not allowing Houston to challenge the ruling.
COLLEGE FOOTBALL-HEISMAN FINALISTS
