Jamestown  (JSDC) The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC) staff and Board of Directors had a very busy and successful 2019. Like past years, the FlexPACE Interest Buy-down Loan continues to be the most popular of the many incentives offered by JSDC. The Board of Directors approved a total of $433,700 in FlexPACE funds to nine local projects and leveraged over $5.6 million which was invested in our communities. Growing industries included: healthcare, logistics, retail, utility construction, and food establishments. Learn more about all of JSDC incentives here.

In 2019, JSDC completed a long-term project by transfering management of the I-94 Business Park to the land owners of the Park. The project began back in 2003 with the final lot sale to United Parcel Service in 2019. The Park is now full with retail, finance, construction, logistics, diesel mechanics, residential/commercial development, and aerospace industries.

The Spiritwood Energy Park continues to attract interest from multiple industries. “A biomass company that recently broke ground in Grand Forks is interested in more locations across the state, including Spiritwood,” reported Connie Ova, CEO, “We do have an exclusive agreement with Company X; there is other interest in the site for a value-added processing facility; we are working with North Dakota Commerce on a bioprocessing facility project; and Great River Energy is working with a greenhouse project with a possible site visit at SEPA in January .”

The newest success is the completion (and under budget) of the Jamestown Airport Business Park which is ready for the aeronautical and non-aeronautical industries. The Park offers 32 shovel-ready lots ranging in size for 8.5 to 46 acres and excellent accessibility to transportation infrastructure. JSDC is currently working with the North Dakota Army National Guard to locate their new Armory in the southeastern area of this Park. According to Ova, “Airport Park interest has been from local companies wanting to expand and third party suppliers of local companies as well as a UAV company that has other locations in ND.”

JSDC continues its support to Train ND, ND Small Business Development Center (SBDC), and the Jamestown Regional Entrepreneurship programs. Train ND benefits workforce, employers, and employees by providing Open Enrollment classes in Jamestown. A class list for January through March 2020 can be found here. Train ND can also provide inudstry– or company-specific training. To learn more about training opportunities with Train ND, please call Susie Carlson at 701.231.6912 or email her at Susie.Carlson@ndscs.edu. The ND SBDC and Jamestown Regional Entrepreneurship Center continue to provide excellent training opportunities and consulting services to entrepreneurs and business owners in throughout Stutsman County.

The staff and Board of Directors are proud of what we’ve accomplished in 2019 as well as our continued support of our partners. We look forward to another successful year 2020.  For more information on what JSDC offers, please visit our website, on Linkedin, or on Facebook.

WALHALLA, N.D. (AP) — The nine Charbonneau sisters never forgot the beatings and harsh discipline they endured at the St. Paul’s Indian Mission School in South Dakota. But in their 50s and 60s they remembered, one by one, something even worse: the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of priests and nuns. Most have given up their fight to sue the church, and want to forget. But four of them persist. Every year they scrape together money and travel to South Dakota to lobby for legal changes that would allow their case to move forward. Every year they come home defeated.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A popular but cash-poor 3D printer business in Colorado is relocating to North Dakota. Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota announced Wednesday that the LulzBot brand of 3D printers will be manufactured by Fargo Additive Manufacturing Equipment 3D, or FAME 3D. The company plans to bring 13 employees from Colorado and hire an additional 50 workers for its Fargo plant. FAME 3D last month bought out Aleph Objects Inc., the Loveland, Colorado company that was making the printers. Before its financial woes, it employed more than 100 people, most of whom were laid off.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A group is working to rename Custer Park in Bismarck because of the “historical trauma” it says is associated with its namesake, Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. The military officer served during the Civil War and fought against Native Americans on the Great Plains in the 1860s and 1870s before leading his men to death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. He spent several years stationed at Fort Abraham Lincoln in Mandan before his death. Two Bismarck women representing the group say the Native American community has negative views of the Custer name.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A New Jersey company that sells caller identification spoofing services is suing North Dakota over its new law which makes it a crime to use false caller ID information with intent to defraud or mislead. SpoofCard LLC says the law is unconstitutional and that federal law takes precedence. SpoofCard and CEO Amanda Pietrocola are asking a federal judge to stop the state from enforcing the law that took effect in August and to award them unspecified monetary damages. Spoofing involves altering or disguising the number that shows up on the caller ID of the person being called.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Industrial Commission has endorsed a measure aimed at reducing the wasteful burning of natural gas in the state’s oil patch. The three-member panel led by Gov. Doug Burgum approved an order Tuesday that lets producers and companies that purchase their gas enter into contracts that guarantee space for the producer’s gas on systems such as pipelines. State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says such a guarantee lowers the risk for investing in new gas gathering and processing facilities. Helms said the order could help accelerate projects by as much as two years.

NFL-NEWS

Prescott expected to play despite sore shoulder

UNDATED (AP) — Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott has a shoulder injury that is limiting him in practice but shouldn’t keep him out Sunday when the Cowboys try to qualify for the playoffs at Philadelphia.

The Cowboys and Eagles are tied for the NFC East lead at 7-7. Dallas advances to the postseason with a victory, but the Eagles will take the division and make the playoffs by beating the Cowboys and Giants.

Prescott didn’t throw during the portion of practice that was open to reporters Wednesday. Coach Jason Garrett said Prescott had an MRI and “everything seems to be OK.”

In other NFL news:

— The Bears have placed inside linebacker Danny Trevathan (treh-VAY’-than) on injured reserve because of a left elbow injury. Trevathan has not played since Nov. 10, when his arm bent awkwardly as he tried to sack Jeff Driskel in a win over Detroit.

— The Jaguars have fired Tom Coughlin (KAWF’-lihn) as executive vice president of football operations, two seasons after the team advanced to the AFC championship game. The 73-year-old Coughlin built the team from the ground up in 1995 and revived it upon his return in 2017. The NFL Players Association says more than 25% of player grievances filed in the last two years have been against the Jaguars.

— It looks like Daniel Jones is returning as the Giants’ starting quarterback after missing two games with a sprained right ankle. Jones took most of the first-team snaps at practice Wednesday, a major indication the rookie will start Sunday in the penultimate game of the season against the Washington Redskins.

— The Titans have made yet another move at kicker, placing veteran Ryan Succop (SUK’-uhp) back on injured reserve and signing Greg Joseph off Carolina’s practice squad. The Titans announced the moves a day after waiving Ryan Santoso after he struggled on kickoffs.

— Buccaneers Pro Bowl receiver Mike Evans and safety Jordan Whitehead will miss the remainder of the season because of hamstring injuries. The Buccaneers placed both players on injured reserve and also announced that receiver Spencer Schnell has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.

— Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green won’t play this season because his ankle injury isn’t fully healed. The Bengals’ most accomplished player becomes a free agent after the season and says he’s open to a contract extension. But he doesn’t want the team to give him a franchise tag and keep him for one more year.

— Tired of speculation about his future, Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. ended any conjecture by saying he wants to stay in Cleveland despite a disappointing first season. Beckham decided to set the record straight after reports surfaced in recent weeks claiming he was unhappy and wanted to go to another team.

— The Panthers are preparing to play rookie quarterback Will Grier against the Colts. Interim coach Perry Fewell said Wednesday that Grier is taking reps with the first team at practice this week. Fewell added he’ll make a decision on his starter after Thursday’s practice.

MLB-NEWS

Cole and Yankees finalize record deal

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Yankees have introduced the new ace of their pitching staff.

The Yanks and Gerrit Cole have finalized the record nine-year, $324 million contract they agreed to during the winter meetings last week. His deal is the largest for a pitcher in both its total and its average annual value of $36 million.

Cole was 20-5 with an AL-leading 2.50 ERA and a major league-leading 326 strikeouts for Houston last season.

In other MLB news:

— Free agent outfielder Avisaíl (av-ih-sah-EEL’) García has finalized a two-year, $20 million contract with the Brewers a deal that includes a 2022 club option and could be worth $30 million over three years. García batted .282 with a career-high 20 home runs and 72 RBIs for the Tampa Bay Rays last season.

— Three-time All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp has agreed to terms on a minor league contract with the Marlins and is expected to take part in spring training. The 35-year-old Kemp hit .200 in 20 games for the Reds last season before spending time in the Mets organization, including the Syracuse Mets.

— The Red Sox will pay a team-record $13.4 million luxury tax after failing to make the playoffs, according to figures sent to clubs and obtained by The Associated Press. The Yankees and Cubs are the only other teams on the hook for a luxury tax. New York finished with a $6.7 million bill and Chicago will shell out $7.6 million.

Kleinendorst played eight NHL seasons for the Rangers, Whalers and Capitals.

OBIT-COACH-REMEMBER THE TITANS

High school coach portrayed in “Remember the Titans” dies

ALEXANDRIA, VA (AP) — Herman Boone, the Virginia high school football coach who inspired the movie “Remember the Titans,” has died. He was 84. Aly Khan Johnson, an assistant coach for Boone beginning in 1972, said the coach died Wednesday at his home in Alexandria, Virginia. Boone guided T.C. Williams High School to a state championship while navigating the early days of desegregation. In the movie, he was portrayed by Denzel Washington.

TOKYO-MARATHON COURSE

Tokyo Olympic marathon set; 3 loops on a course in Sapporo

TOKYO (AP) — The marathon courses are set for the Tokyo Olympics.

The races were moved out of Tokyo over a month ago to the northern city of Sapporo to avoid the capital’s summer heat. Organizers finalized the course plans on Thursday.

Both the men’s and women’s courses will start and finish in the city’s Odori Park. The course for both races will consist of three loops. One loop will be about the length of a half-marathon and will be run first. The other loop will be about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and will be covered twice.

The women’s race will be run on Aug. 8 and the men’s marathon on the following day — the final day of the Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee unilaterally moved the marathons and race walks out of Tokyo because of the summer heat, which angered Tokyo’s governor.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The start date for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump is up in the air. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to say Wednesday when she’ll send the impeachment articles against Trump to the Senate for the trial. Pelosi made the comments after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected a proposal from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to call several witnesses. McConnell also said that he is coordinating with the White House and declared that he’s “not an impartial juror.” Pelosi says that’s unfair and that she’ll wait to see what the Senate does next.

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the U.S. impeachment process “far-fetched,” making a seemingly obvious prediction that Donald Trump will be acquitted in the Senate. Putin said Thursday at his annual news conference in Moscow that the move is a continuation of the Democrats’ fight against Trump since losing the 2016 presidential election. Putin likened Trump’s impeachment to the earlier U.S. probe into collusion with Russia, which Putin downplayed as being groundless.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A winnowed field of Democratic presidential contenders is set to take the debate stage for a sixth and final time in 2019. On Thursday night, the candidates will seek to convince anxious voters that they are the party’s best hope to deny President Donald Trump a second term. The televised contest ahead of Christmas will bring seven candidates to heavily Democratic California, the biggest prize in the primary season and home to 1-in-8 Americans. The debate comes a day after a politically divided U.S. House voted to impeach the Republican president.

WASHINGTON (AP) — One day after impeaching President Donald Trump, the Democratic-led House is expected to overwhelmingly pass one of his signature priorities. A bill implementing terms of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement is expected to pass Thursday with bipartisan support. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her colleagues won key concessions from an administration anxious to pass the trade deal before next year’s election season makes that task more difficult. The agreement is projected to have only a modest impact on the economy. But it gives lawmakers from both parties the chance to support an agreement that is attractive to farmers, ranchers and business owners.
