..A SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM WILL NEGATIVELY IMPACT TRAVEL
SOMEWHERE IN THE NORTHERN PLAINS THIS WEEKEND…

It is too early to know who gets what from this storm, but at

this point it looks like the higher snow amounts and higher wind

speeds should be across the eastern part of North Dakota, on into

South Dakota and Minnesota. The expectation, right now, is that

the area east of a line from Bismarck to the Turtle Mountains

would be impacted the most, but that expectation could change as

we get closer to the onset of the storm. The most likely timing

for the storm is Saturday through Sunday. The most likely impacts

are significant snow and wind.

If you have weekend travel plans anywhere in the Northern Plains

you will want to keep up to date on the weather forecast, and do

not be surprised if that forecast changes.

Make sure to check the forecast often as additional information will be provided as confidence increases.

City Fire Chief Jim Reuther, says, crews from Otter Tail Power and MDU were called to the scene to disconnect utility service.

He says, due to low water pressure in the area, a dead end street, the Jamestown Rural Fire Department was called in to provide water drop tanks to fight the fire, in the detached garage, at the alley behind the house..

The additional water was not needed, and Rural Fire was on standby at the scene.

The fire was under control, about 12:15-p.m.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.

Chief Reuther says there were no other structures damaged and no injuries.

Five city fire units, and 19 fire fighters were on the scene about two hours.

Video on scene at CSiNewsNow.com

On Christmas Day, the City Department responded at 1:13 p.m. to an apartment fire, at 734 11th Street Northeast in apartment, No. 16.

City Fire Chief Jim Reuther says the occupants extinguished the fire, before the city fire units arrived, most likely caused by cooking. He says firefighters extracted smoke from the building and were on the scene about a half hour.

Jamestown  (JRMC)  — The Siek family got a special gift this Christmas – a dad who is done with cancer treatments.

Husband, father and grandfather Chris Siek rang the cancer center bell three times on Friday, Dec. 20, 2019. He is the third cancer survivor to ring at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

“I’ve been ready for this for six months,” Siek said about his cancer journey.

Sanford Health Family Medicine Physician, Dr. Justin Rosenau, diagnosed him with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) on May 1.

The active 39-year-old was working a full-time and part-time job, in addition to caring for his family. His stay in a hospital felt like a prison, he remembers, because he couldn’t work or see his family. He wasn’t even well enough to attend his grandson’s first birthday, though he is confident he will attend the second.

Siek received about 100 arsenic infusions – three-hour treatments every day for four weeks at a time. Originally, he traveled to Fargo for those infusions. However, with the opening of the JRMC Cancer Center in July, life changed.

“It’s way easier to drive two miles compared to 200,” he said.

The day he rang the bell was a special one for his wife, Missy, and children, Mercedes, Ethan and Skyler. Also in attendance was Ashley, Skyler’s girlfriend and Easton, Siek’s 19-month-old grandson.

“Christopher has a positive attitude,” Missy said. “That helped the family quite a bit.”

JRMC opened the cancer center in July. It anticipated serving about 40 treatments each month, said Mike Delfs, JRMC President & CEO. Since October, the JRMC Cancer Center has served more than 100 each month.

“Building the JRMC Cancer Center took a decade of work. It’s humbling to see us serving the community in this way. It’s also bittersweet,” Delfs said.

Amongst the pride and excitement were feelings of sorrow.

“We know not every ending is a happy one,” Delfs said.

The same day Siek rang the bell, another patient chose to terminate service and go on hospice services instead.

The Siek family felt the same way.

Siek said he remembered a special uncle, Mike Doyle, who passed away from cancer in 2011. He was 56.

Doyle’s daughter and Siek’s cousin, Nikki Wibstad, attended the bell ringing in support of Chris.

“I’m emotional,” she said. She remembers how Siek and her dad drank coffee together and helped each other with house projects. “He was a special uncle to Chris.”

Now that treatments are complete, Siek said he’s looking forward to returning to work.

“I’m going back to full-time next week,” he said. “No matter what they say.”

For the family, they are looking forward to having their father back.

“It’s big man’s special day,” Missy said. “An extra special Christmas present.”

Jamestown Regional Medical Center, in partnership with Sanford Health, opened the JRMC Cancer Center in 2019. The JRMC Cancer Center serves 100 people from Sanford and other healthcare organizations in the Jamestown area each month, saving more than 160,000 miles of travel each year.

Bismarck  (DPI)  The state Department of Education is encouraging public schools and early childhood care providers to apply for a grant aimed at strengthening the literacy skills of North Dakota students.  The dollars are coming from the federal Department of Education.

The grant will help schools and providers build on students’ reading, writing, and speaking skills, and will focus on benefiting children living in low-income homes, those with disabilities, children who are homeless or in foster care, and those who are learning English as a second language.

Public school districts and early childhood care providers may apply for a share of the money.
Application instruction workshops will be starting January 14th.

(AP)  A North Dakota man who refers to himself as Baby Chapo in reference to the infamous Mexican drug lord is facing felony drug charges along with another man arrested by Bismarck police. The Bismarck Tribune reports that 19-year-old Geovannie Tapia-Nelson, 19, of Bismarck and 20-year-old Tristen DeMarrias, of Fort Yates, are being held on $100,000 cash bail. Police say Tapia-Nelson fancies himself after Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel who’s now imprisoned in the United States. A police affidavit states that Tapia-Nelson and DeMarrias are shown in Snapchat videos displaying drugs, weapons and cash.

GLEN ULLIN, N.D. (AP) — A family nurse based in a small North Dakota town is providing medical treatment for people with opioid dependence who are unable to commute to Bismarck. Rhonda Schmidt has treated about half a dozen patients from Beach, the Dickinson and Killdeer areas, and Grant and Morton counties since March. The Glen Ullin Family Medical Clinic where Schmidt works is about an hour’s drive west of Bismarck. Schmidt is the only one in Glen Ullin who can prescribe Suboxone to curb opioid cravings. Glen Ullin has a population of 713.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota firefighters are continuing a 30-year tradition of delivering gifts to children at hospitals in Fargo on Christmas Day. It’s a tradition that began in 1990 when the 3-year-old son of a Fargo firefighter was hospitalized and worried that Santa Claus would not be able to find him. The gifts this year are given in memory of Keaton Nelson, who made his Make-a-Wish be for gifts to be delivered to other hospitalized children.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Settlements from a lawsuit over a 2013 prescribed burn that became a wildfire on the South Dakota and North Dakota border have now cost the federal government nearly $900,000. The Rapid City Journal reports that two more settlements were filed last week in federal court, bringing the number of resolved claims to nine. The deals were for $170,000 to the Diamond Acre Trust and $7,500 to Jamie Herman. More settlements are likely. The suit remains open for four plaintiffs, all of whom were not able to come to terms during a settlement conference last month.

NBA…

UNDATED (AP) — Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) got the better of Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) in a matchup pitting two of the NBA’s best big men.

Embiid poured in 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Philadelphia 76ers cruised to a 121-109 win over the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks. Embiid also hit three 3-pointers, and teammate Tobias Harris shot 5-for-7 from beyond the arc as Philadelphia nailed 21 of its 44 attempts from downtown. Harris finished with 22 points and Josh Richardson added 18 to help the Sixers improve to 16-2 at home.

Antetokounmpo had 18 points and 14 rebounds but shot just 8-for-27 as the Bucks lost for just the second time in their last 23 games. Khris Middleton had a team-high 31 points for Milwaukee, which trailed by 29 at one point before falling to 27-5.

In an all-Los Angeles battle, the Lakers suffered their fourth straight loss since climbing to the top of the NBA’s overall standings at 27-3. Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard scored 11 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter and had 12 rebounds in the Clippers’ second win in two meetings with the Lakers this season, 111-106. Leonard hit a 3 to cap a 7-0 run that tied it at 101 5:14 remaining. He later added four free throws to help the Clippers get within two games of the Pacific Division-leading Lakers.

Kyle Kuzma (KOOZ’-mah) led the Lakers with 25 points, Anthony Davis added 24 and LeBron James had 23 with 10 assists and nine rebounds. James was gunning for his 10th Christmas Day victory, which would have tied former Heat teammate Dwyane (dwayn) Wade for the most all-time.

In Toronto, the Boston Celtics have ended the Raptors’ string of 34 straight home wins versus Atlantic Division teams, a league record for a single division. Jaylen Brown delivered 30 points and Kemba Walker added 22 as the Celtics dumped the Raptors, 118-102.

Enes Kanter had 12 points and 11 rebounds as the Celtics snapped an eight-game losing streak north of the border. Kanter was in action after getting clearance from the Canadian government to travel to Toronto. The Turkish native has been a vocal critic of Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s (REH’-jehp TY’-ihp UR’-doh-wahnz) government for its treatment of residents and had his passport revoked by his home country two years ago.

Fred VanVleet scored 27 points and Chris Boucher had a career-high 24 for the Raptors, who hadn’t lost to a division rival at home since Nov. 10, 2015.

The outcome keeps the Celtics a half-game ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division and drops the Raptors 1 ½ games off the pace.

The struggling Warriors looked like contenders by pulling away in the second half of a 116-104 stunner against the Houston Rockets. Golden State trailed by four before holding the Rockets to 36 points after intermission.

Guard Damion Lee was the catalyst for Golden State with team highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds. Draymond Green provided 16 of his 20 points in the second half and finished with 11 boards. D’Angelo Russell contributed 20 points as the Warriors improved to 8-24.

The Rockets shot just 37 percent from the field, with Russell Westbrook going 11 of 32 while scoring a team-best 30 points. James Harden added 24 points and had 11 assists for Houston, which ended a four-game winning streak and fell to a Southwest Division-leading 21-10.

The Nuggets hosted a Christmas Day game for the first time in a quarter-century and saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end, 112-100 against the Pelicans. Brandon Ingram scored 31 points and Derrick Favors grabbed 13 rebounds for New Orleans, which is 2-0 versus Denver this season and 7-23 against the rest of the league. Jrue Holiday had 20 points to help the Pelicans complete a 3-1 road trip.

JJ Redick scored 13 of his 15 points in the second quarter, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from near half-court to give the Pelicans a 58-55 lead.

Nikola Jokic (nih-KOH’-lah YOH’-kihch) had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Denver.

Encarnación is due $11 million in salary next season and a $1 million signing bonus, with the White Sox holding an option for the 2021 season.

Encarnación hit 34 home runs in 109 games for Seattle and the Yankees last season.

Encarnación joins former AL Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) and catcher Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAN’-nee grahn-DAHL’) as big-money additions this offseason.

Fabian White Jr. shot 7 of 13 from the field and hit all five of his free throws to finish with a career-high 19 points and earn the tournament’s most outstanding player honors. Caleb Mills also had 19 points and hit three of Houston’s eight 3-pointers.

AP STORY OF THE YEAR

Woods’ comeback at Masters named AP Sports Story of the Year

UNDATED (AP) — Tiger Woods’ victory at the Masters might not have been the most important sports story of 2019. It was certainly one of the most uplifting.

Voters chose Woods’ dramatic comeback at Augusta National as The Associated Press sports story of the year.

Coming in second was the U.S. women’s soccer team’s victory at the World Cup. The monthlong competition combined a stirring victory with captain Megan Rapinoe’s outspoken push for her team to earn as much as the less successful American men’s team.

It was a year filled with outside-the-lines tensions in sports. But Woods winning the Masters after years of injury and personal problems was a crowd pleaser and took the top honor.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan’s defense ministry says that a powerful suicide car bombing has targeted an army compound in the country’s north, killing six Afghan soldiers. The Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the attack, saying also that they captured the military compound. Shortly after the bomber detonated the car laden with explosives, a group of insurgents stormed into the compound, setting off a shootout with Afghan forces. The ministry also said that three Afghan soldiers were wounded in the explosion and the ensuing “terrorist attack.” The provincial governor’s spokesman said fighting inside the compound continued for hours before the attackers were repelled.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A strong typhoon that barreled through the central Philippines has left at least 20 people dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, devastating Christmas celebrations in the predominantly Catholic country. Typhoon Phanfone stranded many people in sea and airports at the peak of holiday travel, set off landslides, engulfed low-lying villages with floods, destroyed houses, downed trees and electrical posts and knocked out power in entire provinces. A disaster response officer described one coastal area as a “ghost town” on Christmas Day. The storm weakened slightly on Thursday as it blew into the South China Sea. Most of the 20 deaths were due to drowning, falling trees and accidental electrocution.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — Religious services and memorial ceremonies have been held in Indonesia and Thailand to mark the 15th anniversary of the Indian Ocean tsunami, one of modern history’s worst natural disasters. Thousands of people knelt in prayer in Aceh province in Indonesia, the country which suffered the most casualties with more than 170,000 people killed or missing and assumed dead. The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami was triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra island and about 230,000 people died in a dozen countries as far away as East Africa. Tens of thousands of the missing have never been accounted for.

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia (AP) — People along a swath of southern Asia have gazed at the sky in marvel at a “ring of fire” solar eclipse. The so-called annular eclipse, in which a thin outer ring of the sun is still visible, could be seen along a path stretching from India and Pakistan to Thailand and Indonesia. Authorities in Indonesia provided telescopes and hundreds of special glasses to protect viewers’ eyes. Thousands gazed at the sky and cheered and clapped as the sun transformed into a dark orb for more than two minutes, briefly plunging the sky into darkness. Hundreds of others prayed at mosques.

TOKYO (AP) — Okinawa’s Gov. Denny Tamaki has renewed calls for Japan’s central government to halt construction of a U.S. Marine Corps. base being relocated to a less-crowded area of the southern Japanese island despite vehement local opposition. Tamaki was responding Thursday to a defense ministry estimate that the project will require more than twice the time and costs earlier estimated due to the instability of the seabed being reclaimed. U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma is to be moved from densely populated Ginowan to the previously undeveloped Henoko area on Okinawa’s eastern coast. Futenma’s current base is to be closed and returned to Okinawa. Japan’s government insists the relocation as “the only solution.”
