MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man who was hunting pheasants in the Custer Mine area near Garrison shot and killed a mountain lion that had emerged from tall grass and charged at him. Gary Gorney tells the Minot Daily News he expected to see a rooster pheasant Thursday after his hunting dog pointed to the area. Instead he was greeted by a female lion that weighed more than 100 pounds. Gorney says he doesn’t remember dropping his dad’s 100-year double-barrel shotgun and reaching for his 9 millimeter handgun underneath his jacket. He says his instincts as a military law enforcement officers took over.
FARGO (Ryan Stotts, INFORUM) — Jocelyn Burdick, 97, died Thursday, Dec. 26, in Bethany on University. She was the first woman from North Dakota to serve in the U.S. Senate, although she never ran for office.
Her husband, Sen. Quentin Burdick, died in 1992 while in the office, and his wife filled his seat for a three-month term until a special election could be held for a replacement. While initially hopeful more women would fill the Senate chambers from North Dakota, only Democrat Heidi Heitkamp has been elected since 1992.
Birch Burdick, Cass County State’s Attorney and Burdick’s son, said his mother was a woman of deep faith with a good sense of her relationship with God. That faith guided her in life, he said, and gave her a sense of principle and comfort.
“She had the opportunity to do a great many great things in life,” he said. “And she did.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Debate over whether to ban new refugees in Burleigh County and a rare quadruple homicide in Mandan were among North Dakota’s top news stories for 2019.
Other notable events included a crude oil spill from the Keystone pipeline in eastern North Dakota; the opening of medical marijuana dispensaries across the state; and the repeal of the nation’s toughest Sunday business restrictions.
And the North Dakota Legislature passed its first anti-abortion laws in six years, though they aren’t being enforced because of legal challenges.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe’s plan to grow hemp became one of the first in the nation to get federal approval. The Department of Agriculture announced the Santee Sioux were among three tribes and three states to get approval under the 2018 Farm Bill. Two other tribes in South Dakota — the Oglala Sioux and Yankton Sioux tribes — are still awaiting decisions on their plans. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has opposed hemp cultivation in the state, but that hasn’t stopped tribes from pursuing their own hemp plans.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Interstate 5 has reopened in Southern California’s Tejon Pass after a 36-hour closure caused by a massive snowstorm. Caltrans says the highway reopened Friday, allowing traffic escorted by California Highway Patrol units to flow between the Los Angeles area and the San Joaquin Valley. It’s the last of the major highway closures to be cleared since the storm hit the region Wednesday. Snow and ice continue to cause problems on smaller routes as a cold air mass remains in place. The National Weather Service says the storm has moved east into Arizona and there will be a few dry days before more precipitation.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military says a U.S. Special Forces soldier who died in Afghanistan this week was seizing a Taliban weapons cache when he was killed. A spokesman says Sgt. 1st Class Michael Goble was clearing out the weapons discovered in Kunduz Province when an explosion happened. The U.S. is disputing Taliban claims that the service members were in a convoy targeted by a roadside bomb.
NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals court says a man who sought to aid the Islamic State group by trying to kill an FBI agent must be resentenced because his 17-year prison term is shockingly low. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the new sentencing for Fareed Mumuni on Friday. Mumuni was sentenced in April 2018 after pleading guilty to charges that he planned to aid the extremist organization and tried to kill the agent who was searching his Staten Island home. Prosecutors say Mumuni attacked the agent with a knife, but the agent’s body armor protected him. One appeals judge in a partial dissent said Mumuni’s 17-year sentence would be fine if the sentencing judge better explained it.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City is increasing its police presence in some Brooklyn neighborhoods with large Jewish populations after possibly anti-Semitic attacks during Hanukkah, most recently Friday morning. Mayor Bill de Blasio says that officers will be more visible in Borough Park, Crown Heights and Williamsburg, and that police will boost visits to houses of worship and some other places. Around the city, police have gotten at least six reports this week of attacks possibly propelled by anti-Jewish bias. The latest happened around 12:40 a.m. Friday. Police say a woman slapped three other women in the face and head after encountering them on a Crown Heights corner.
FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — One of the largest school districts in the United States will allow students one excused absence per school year to participate in civic activities such as protests. News outlets report Fairfax County Public Schools in Virginia plans to start the process Jan. 27, 2020. School officials say students in seventh through 12th grades can use the day for civic engagement activities such as attending marches or meeting with lawmakers. Some experts say skipping school to attend protests tends to favor liberal causes. Students must give two days notice before they take the day off and need permission from a parent or guardian.

Police say the dead include 4- and 12-year-old girls and their 41-year-old father, who returned to the apartment to attempt a rescue. The fire erupted early Friday morning in a unit occupied by seven people in the city of Hemet, southeast of Los Angeles. The 8-year-old brother was rescued and was in grave condition.
