Jamestown  (CSi)  The Stutsman County Park Board in Special Session, Friday, granted a lease to Tom Schultz, to operate the campground at Pelican Point at Jamestown Reservoir for 15 years.  The vote in favor was 5-2 with members Joan Morris and Steve Cichos voting  in opposition.

Previously, Dean and Wanda Albers  were unable to reach an agreement to renew the lease.

Under the new agreement, Schultz will pay $1 per year and assumes previously paid county costs to include pumping and maintaining the wastewater tanks around the campground. Schultz assumes responsibility for minor repair expenses with the county park board picking up  major expenses like new roofs on buildings.

Jamestown (JRMC) – Born into a musical family, one baby was already showing off her powerful voice.

Izetta Renee Roise sang a song of hunger on Jan. 2 – the day of her birth.

Born at 12:41 a.m., she is the first baby of the new year born at Jamestown Regional Medical Center. She weighed 7 lbs., 10 ounces and has dark hair and “probably” blue eyes, her mom said.

Izetta’s parents, Stephen and Hannah Roise, welcome her to their Kulm home, along with little brother, Oliver age 2.

Stephen and Hannah married in 2016 and moved to Kulm, N.D., soon after. The couple farms alongside her dad, Bruce Kusler.

With the long drive and the pending blizzard, the couple rented a hotel room in Jamestown to be nearer the hospital. Hannah’s due date was Dec. 29.

“We weren’t going to take any chances,” Stephen said.

Once the storm ended on Dec. 31, the couple headed home. It felt like they had just arrived when Izetta was ready to return.

The baby’s arrival – like her brother’s – was fast and furious. Though she would have accepted, Hannah did not receive an epidural for either birth.

“She came quickly like her brother,” Hannah said, saying there just wasn’t enough time for the pain medication.

Izetta, an old English name meaning “renowned for beauty,” is also one of Hannah’s middle names. The couple said they hope Izetta is known not only for her external beauty, but also for her beauty inside and out. As their children grow, Hannah and Stephen say they hope their children learn to love music and travel.

The couple met through a mutual friend and a mutual interest in mission work in Uganda.

“Someday soon, I hope to take both of these munchkins to visit that land,” Hannah said.

The Roises say they appreciate the care of JRMC, especially the “peaceful presence” of Dr. Glenn Wiens, Essentia; and JRMC Registered Nurse Deb Thingstad.

Izetta is the first of about 350 babies born at JRMC each year.

Jamestown (CSi) The James River Humane Society reminds those who received an animal as a Christmas gift, to keep in mind that it needs time to adjust to its new surroundings in the home.

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable JRHS, Board Member, Jay Nitschke said “The Magic Threes,” are a good way to remember how a new pet needs to adapt to the home and family members.

They are:

Three days to decompress, from being at the shelter, or another home, and possibly three times three days, if the animal is shy.

Three weeks to know the regular routine of the home members, after the Christmas routine.

Three months to feel at home, in its new surroundings.

She says the pet will also need to adjust to a family member who has been away, for a period of time, and returns to the home.

She adds to be patient with the dog or cat, while they are adjusting to their new home.

The principle applies to both dogs and cats.

On another topic, Jay said new memberships are welcome, and at various donation levels, and includes the newsletter. The dollars go toward such areas, as the costs of spaying and neutering the animals before adoption, and other shelter costs.

The James River Humane Society is located off the I-94 Bloom Exit and is open seven days a week, from 9-a.m., to 11:30-a.m., and 5:30-p.m., to 6:30-p.m, or by appointment.

(CSi)   NDHP    On January 4th a NDHP Trooper was in the process of initiating a traffic stop near State Highway 15 at mile post 91 in Nelson County at about 10:20 AM. The vehicle was stopped for speeding and a registration violation. The driver, later identified as Jarred Martell, fled east bound on Hwy 15 entered Grand Forks County and then went north on Grand Forks County Rd 16, then east on 14th Ave NE. The pursuit concluded just west of 28th St NE on 14th Ave NE in Grand Forks County when Martell tried to stop and avoid spike strips put down by Emerado Police. Martell lost control of his vehicle sliding sideways and then tried to double back and go west on 14th Ave NE. Martell was forcibly pushed off of the roadway at a low speed using the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT). Martell then exited his vehicle and ran on foot. Martell ran south of 14th Ave NE to a tree row about ½ mile south of 14th Ave NE. Martell was taken into custody and taken to Altru in Grand Forks where he was treated and brought to Grand Forks County Corrections. The investigation is ongoing.

(AP)  Police say two officers, an unlicensed teen driver and a passenger have been hurt in a crash in Watford City. Authorities say two Watford City police vehicles, with emergency lights activated, were traveling northbound on Main St. early Sunday. A 17-year-old boy driving a GMC Yukon pulled over to yield to the first police vehicle, then pulled back on the street where he was struck by the second police vehicle. Two male officers, ages 36 and 31, were injured. The teen and a 36-year-old male passenger were also hurt. Police say all the injuries were minor.

(AP)The threat of flooding on the Missouri River has eased in the Bismarck-Mandan area of North Dakota. The National Weather Service on Sunday canceled a flood advisory for western Burleigh County and northeastern Morton County. The advisory was prompted last week by an ice jam on the Missouri River north of the Grant Marsh bridge. But the weather service says the river has receded in the Bismarck-Mandan area and continues a “steady downward trend.” The flooding affected some homes on both sides of the river but was not widespread. But forecasters say a second round of flooding is possible.

ARVILLA, N.D. (AP) — The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has cited Columbia Grain International for a fatal worker accident at a North Dakota grain bin last summer. The agency is proposing $190,000 in penalties against the Portland, Oregon-based company after a worker died while cleaning a bin last July in Arvilla, in eastern North Dakota. OSHA inspectors determined that Columbia Grain failed to follow the agency’s standards during grain bin entry and cleaning operations. Fifty-eight-year-old Kevin John Anderson was cleaning a bin when he became buried under 15 feet of corn and died. The company has 15 business days to contest the findings.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The driving force behind a North Dakota company that won a $400 million contract to build part of the border wall is described as a “go-getter” and a “gung-ho, smart guy” by people who know him. Tommy Fisher runs Fisher Sand & Gravel, a company his father founded in 1952. Fisher’s strategy for winning the contract included a bevy of appearances on conservative media often seen by the president. It paid off with a contract that Fisher says is the second-biggest in the country’s history. But the contract is now being audited over concern it may not meet requirements.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota county that’s home to the capital city of Bismarck may let voters eventually decide whether to bar refugees from resettling in the area. Burleigh County Commission Chairman Brian Bitner said the five-member panel will discuss a potential ballot question Monday night. The discussion will come after the commission last month voted to accept no more than 25 refugees in 2020. Bitner voted against accepting new refugees. He said several people have since requested the issue come before voters.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The wet weather that caused flooding problems in much of the Midwest last year had one small benefit: electric generation from the Missouri River’s six upstream dams was up 5.6 percent. It was the first time time this century the river had back-to-back years of producing surplus power. That’s important to consumers because the Western Area Power Administration sells the power to rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, Indian tribes and other customers. If they don’t get enough from the dams, they have to buy electricity on the open market. Those costs ultimately get passed on to consumers.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Board of Higher Education is accepting applications for an open seat created by the departure of board member Dan Traynor. Traynor, of Devils Lake, resigned Thursday while he prepares to take over as a federal judge in North Dakota. He was appointed to the board in 2018. North Dakota School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler, who heads the board’s candidate nominating committee, says applications are due by March 3. The eight-member board includes seven citizen members and one student member. All members are appointed by the governor.

Almost halfway through the third quarter, a layup by Mackenzie Huber with a good free throw on the and-1 brought Valley City within six of Bethany Lutheran. They wouldn’t let Valley City State any closer the rest of the way as they built upon their lead to a 77-59 home victory.

After trailing by two points at halftime, Jamestown twice led by four points early in the second half, only to see the Broncos rally to take a four-point lead of their own.

UJ was down 62-58 before baskets by Brock Schrom (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) and Terrell Alfred (SR/Orlando, FL) tied the game with 9:20 remaining. Shane Chamberlain answered with a three-pointer for Morningside, as did Alfred on the Jimmies’ next trip down the floor, tying the game at 65 with 8:23.

Hastings finished the game on a 14-0 run while Jamestown missed its final eight shots and turned the ball over five times.

NFL PLAYOFFS

Seahawks down Eagles, Vikings top Saints in OT

UNDATED (AP) — The road team went 2-0 in the NFC wild-card playoffs on Sunday. The Seattle Seahawks shut down the Philadelphia Eagles’ short-handed passing attack and the Minnesota Vikings extended their season by defeating the New Orleans Saints in overtime.

Russell Wilson threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf and Marshawn Lynch had a rushing score as the Seahawks beat the Eagles, 17-9 in Philadelphia. Wilson threw for 325 yards and led the team with 45 yards rushing. Metcalf had seven catches for 160 yards.

The Seahawks had a season-high seven sacks from six players, but the biggest hit was provided by Jadeveon Clowney. He knocked out quarterback Carson Wentz with a helmet-to-helmet hit in Philadelphia’s second series.

Josh McCown replaced Wentz and was 18 of 24 for 174 yards, but he couldn’t get the Eagles into the end zone.

The Seahawks now prepare to play the Packers in Green Bay.

In New Orleans, the Vikings blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before Kirk Cousins hit tight end Kyle Rudolph for a four-yard touchdown on the first possession of overtime to give Minnesota a 26-20 victory against the Saints.

Dalvin Cook gained 130 yards from scrimmage and scored a pair of touchdowns that put the Vikings ahead, 20-10. Cousins finished with 242 yards, highlighted by his 43-yard completion to Adam Thielen (THEE’-lehn) that put the ball on the Saints 2-yard line. Cousins furnished his lone scoring pass of the game three plays later to send the Minnesota to the NFC divisional round against the 49ers in San Francisco.

Drew Brees (breez) was 26 of 33 for 208 yards, including a 20-yard scoring strike to Taysom Hill that got the Saints within 20-17 with 10:31 left in the fourth quarter. Will Lutz forced OT by nailing a 49-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in regulation.

NFL-COWBOYS-GARRETT

Garrett gone as Cowboys’ coach

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Jason Garrett era is over in Dallas.

The Cowboys have announced that Garrett is out as head coach after missing the playoffs with an underachieving team. The Cowboys finished 8-8 in the final year of Garrett’s contract, missing the playoffs by one game. It’s the fourth time Dallas finished 8-8 and missed the postseason under the 53-year-old coach, who was 85-67 at the helm.

Garrett had the second-longest tenure with the franchise at 9½ seasons behind Tom Landry’s 29 years. Garrett took over when Wade Phillips was fired halfway through the 2010 season.

The Los Angeles Clippers’ defense wasn’t much better on Sunday than it performed in Saturday’s 140-114 loss to the Grizzlies, but the offense was explosive against the Knicks.

Germany’s 1966 World Cup goalkeeper Tilkowski dies at 84

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Hans Tilkowski, the West Germany goalkeeper in the 1966 World Cup final against England, has died. He was 84.

German soccer club Borussia Dortmund said Monday that Tilkowski died Sunday following “a long, severe illness,” and that he had been with his family.

Tilkowski was best known outside Germany for conceding England’s third goal in extra time in the 1966 final, when Geoff Hurst’s shot hit the bar and bounced downward. Tilkowski always said he was sure the ball did not cross the line.

England won the game 4-2.

Hurst described Tilkowski on Twitter today as a “terrific player for his club, Borussia Dortmund, and country and a very fine man.”

With Dortmund, Tilkowski won the German Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two top Senate Democrats are calling on President Donald Trump to immediately declassify the administration’s reasoning for the deadly strike on an Iranian official. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Senate Foreign Relation Committee’s Sen. Robert Menendez say there’s “no legitimate justification” for keeping the information from the public. Schumer and Menendez say in a Monday letter to Trump the White House’s classified notification sent to Congress Saturday under the War Powers Act was insufficient. Trump has warned the U.S. will levy harsh sanctions if Iraq expels American troops in retaliation for the strike in Baghdad that killed Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Iran has vowed to retaliate.

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) — The global benchmark for crude oil has risen above $70 a barrel for the first time in over three months. The increase came amid jitters over the escalating military tensions between Iran and the United States after an American drone strike killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. The price of oil is now up more than 5% since the killing, and major stock markets are down around the world amid fears of how Iran would fulfill its vow of “harsh retaliation.” The energy industry is worried that Iran could strike at oil and gas facilities along the Persian Gulf that are important to the U.S. and its regional allies.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A 5.7-magnitude quake has jolted Puerto Ricans out of their beds as the strongest quake yet to hit the U.S. territory that has been shaking for the past week. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck Monday morning just south of the island at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (over 6 miles). There was no tsunami threat. Angel Vazquez, emergency management director for the southern coastal city of Ponce, told The Associated Press that power outages were reported in some parts of Puerto Rico following the quake. Small landslides closed some roads on the south coast.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — U.S. Ambassador John Bass is leaving Kabul as his two-year tenure as America’s top diplomat in war-torn Afghanistan has ended. Washington has appointed a charges d’affaires to the post until Bass’ replacement is announced. The State Department says Bass ‘’skillfully advanced the Trump Administration’s goal of reaching a political settlement in Afghanistan that ensures terrorists can never again threaten the United States from Afghan soil while leading a large diplomatic mission in the face of numerous security threats.” The on-again off-again talks with the Taliban seem to have stalled until Washington and Taliban can work out what a cease-fire or reduction of violence would look like.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Kenyan police say they have arrested three men who tried to force their way into a British Army training camp. It occurred the same day that al-Shabab extremists attacked a military base and killed three U.S. military personnel. The internal police report seen by The Associated Press says the three “terrorist suspects” were arrested Sunday after trying to enter the British Army Training Unit in Laikipia county. The British government was not immediately available for comment.
