WASHINGTON (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s spokesman says the Israeli leader will ask his Cabinet on Sunday to approve his plan to annex parts of the West Bank. Jonathan Urich made the announcement on Twitter late Tuesday, shortly after Netanyahu joined President Donald Trump for the unveiling of a new U.S. peace plan. The plan calls for leaving the strategic Jordan Valley and all Israeli settlements under Israeli control.
RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says “a thousand no’s” to the Mideast peace plan announced by President Donald Trump, which strongly favors Israel. Abbas says: “After the nonsense that we heard today we say a thousand no’s to the Deal of The Century.” He said the Palestinians remain committed to ending the Israeli occupation and establishing a state with its capital in east Jerusalem. The plan would create a Palestinian state in parts of the West Bank, but would allow Israel to annex nearly all of its settlements in the occupied territory. The plan would allow the Palestinians to establish a capital on the outskirts of east Jerusalem but would leave most of the city under Israeli control.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s legal team is making a forceful case against the relevance of possible testimony from former national security adviser John Bolton. The lawyers are nearing the end of their defense, and the Senate is braced for debate on whether to allow Bolton and other witnesses into the impeachment trial. Attorney Jay Sekulow took a dismissive swipe at an unpublished book by Bolton that is said to contradict a key defense argument about Trump’s dealings with Ukraine. Revelations about that book have clouded White House hopes for a big finish Tuesday as well as a swift end to the impeachment trial.
WASHINGTON (AP) — An annual congressional report says that the U.S. budget deficit is likely to burst through the symbolic $1 trillion barrier this year despite a healthy economy. The Congressional Budget Office report follows a burst of new spending last year and the repeal in December of several taxes used to help finance the Affordable Care Act. Those have combined to deepen the government’s deficit spiral well on into the future, with trillion-dollar deficits likely for as far as the eye can see. The annual CBO update government’s economic and fiscal health estimates a $1 trillion deficit for the ongoing fiscal year..
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health officials are expanding their checks of international travelers for signs of a worrisome new virus from China, even as they say the risk to Americans so far is very low. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar says worry about the virus should not impact Americans’ day-to-day lives. So far there are five confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S. and no sign they have spread the illness to those around them. But as a precaution, the U.S. is beefing up its checks on returning international travelers beyond the five airports initially announced, to encompass 20 entry points.
BEIJING (AP) — A Thai navy spokesman says 20 officers sent to Wuhan to oversee construction of Thailand’s first new submarine have returned home after the Chinese city was locked down to contain a viral outbreak. He says the officers had left Wuhan during the Lunar New Year holiday at the shipyard where they were stationed. He says they could not return to the Chinese city after it was quarantined on Jan. 23 so the navy allowed them to return to Thailand on their own. Their return was controversial because it appeared that members of the Thai military received special treatment, while plans to evacuate civilians from Wuhan were put on hold pending an agreement with Chinese authorities.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Turkey has strongly rejected the U.S. peace plan for the Israelis and Palestinians, describing it as “an annexation plan that aims to kill the two-state solution and usurp Palestinian lands.” A Turkish Foreign Ministry statement also rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration to keep Jerusalem as Israel’s undivided capital, saying “Jerusalem is our red line.” “The United States’ so-called peace plan was still-born,” the ministry said in a statement. “The Palestinian people and their lands cannot be bought with money.”
