Update…

(AP)  Mandan police have released the name of a 36-year-old man who died after fighting officers following a traffic stop over the weekend. The man is identified as John Michael Prudente Jr. of Mandan. An autopsy was being conducted Monday morning. Police say Prudente drove away as two officers were talking to him after a traffic stop in Mandan on Saturday evening. After he pulled into a driveway, police say Prudente began fighting with the officers and was handcuffed. Police say he became limp and unresponsive, and died at a hospital. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fire investigators say an overheated electrical component caused a fire that damaged a south Fargo nursing home last month. Fire Marshal Ryan Erickson says the Jan. 23 fire at Elim Rehab and Care Center started above the child care classroom. The space where the fire started did not have sprinklers, although other parts of the building did have sprinklers. The fire forced the evacuation of more than 100 residents. No injuries were reported. Elim plans to rebuild, but KFGO-AM reports that could take a year or more.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota is among about two dozen states set to receive millions in federal funding for reclaiming abandoned coal mines. The U.S. Interior Department is awarding states and tribes a total of $170 -million dollars. North Dakota will get $2.8 million for coal mine reclamation and repurposing projects. The agency provides the grants to the 25 coal producing states and three tribes based on past and current coal production. The grants are funded in part by a fee collected on all coal produced in the U.S.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Democrats are promising a glitch-free caucus next month. Party spokesman Alex Rohr says “no apps or devices” will be used like those at the caucus in Iowa, which had technical problems that delayed results. North Dakota Democrats will use paper ballots that will be tabulated by a third-party vendor in Bismarck or Fargo. Rohr says everyone qualified to vote in North Dakota may cast their ballot on March 10 at 14 locations statewide, or by a mail-in ballot beforehand. North Dakota Republicans also are planning their caucuses March 10. President Trump is the only candidate on the GOP ballot.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — A Western-themed bar is working with the city of Mandan to settle a federal lawsuit over a mural in front of the building. Owners of the Lonesome Dove sued the city over freedom of speech last May after they were ordered to remove the mural. In response, the city decided in July not to accept mural applications until the lawsuit ended or the city passed a new ordinance. The city approved an ordinance in December, allowing the Lonesome Dove to keep its mural but holding new murals in the city to different standards. The Bismarck Tribune reports both sides are working toward reaching an out-of-court settlement.

MLB-TRADES

Dodgers get Betts, Price, while Maeda goes to Twins

UNDATED (AP) — The Red Sox and Dodgers have reworked a deal that is sending outfielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price to Los Angeles.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Red Sox are receiving outfielder Alex Verdugo and prospects Jeter Downs and Connor Wong for Betts and Price. Boston was to send cash to the Dodgers to offset Price’s salary, reportedly half of the $96 million still owed to the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner.

The Red Sox, Dodgers and Twins had a tentative deal in place last week that included Minnesota prospect Brusdar Graterol to Boston. The trade fell apart when Boston had issues over Graterol’s arm health.

Instead the Twins are sending Graterol to Los Angeles for Kenta Maeda (mah-EH’-dah).

Morton regrets not trying to stop Astros from stealing signs

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Two-time All-Star pitcher Charlie Morton says he regrets not doing anything to try to stop the Houston Astros from illegally stealing signs and relaying information to their hitters during the team’s 2017 World Series championship season.

Morton helped the Astros win the 2017 title in his first season with the team, winning Game 7 of both the ALCS and World Series. He says he’s not sure what he could have done to stop his former teammates and doesn’t recall specifics about who did what wrong in 2017.

Morton spent one more season with the Astros before signing a two-year deal with the Rays last winter.

Taylor closed with a 2-under 70 for a 19 under total. Streelman finished with a 68.

Phil Mickelson got within two shots with four holes to play before signing off on a 74 that left him alone in third place.

Hee Young Park wins women’s Victoria Open

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Korea’s Hee Young Park parred the fourth hole of a three-way playoff to win the LPGA Tour’s Victoria Open, beating compatriots Hye-Jin Choi and So Yeon Ryu.

Former world No. 1 Ryu dropped out on the second playoff hole when she missed a birdie putt, but Park and Choi continued until luck and nature intervened. Choi’s tee shot on the fourth playoff hole came to rest against a pine cone in light rough left of the fairway, leaving her with no choice but to chip out. The chip fell short and her next shot reached a hazard before she reached the fringe of the green in six.

In world and  national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer is calling on the nation’s 74 inspectors general to ensure government whistleblowers are protected. His letter Monday to the Defense Department inspector general and IGs across the federal government comes amid President Donald Trump’s ouster of key government officials in the impeachment probe. Schumer says Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman has been “viciously attacked” by the Republican president after “bravely stepping forward to tell the truth.” Vindman is an ex-national security official who gave moving testimony for the impeachment inquiry. He was ousted Friday, as were others. Schumer wants the inspectors general to ensure whistleblowers are protected according to federal law. The White House stands by the dismissals

BAGHDAD (AP) — Three senior Iraqi officials say the U.S. has signaled its willingness to extend sanctions waivers enabling the country to continue importing vital Iranian gas and electricity imports. They say the new waiver would be a test of Baghdad-Washington ties after tensions soared following a Jan. 3 U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and senior Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. The officials say the U.S. State Department, which issues such waivers, has conveyed it’s readiness to extend Iraq’s waiver for another three months if Iraq is able to formulate a timeline by the end of the week, detailing a plan to wean itself off Iranian gas dependence.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is preparing a $4.8 trillion budget plan that rehashes previously rejected spending cuts while leaving Social Security and Medicare benefits untouched. Trump’s fiscal 2021 budget plan, to be released Monday, seeks to wrestle trillion-dollar-plus deficits into balance after 15 years. It isn’t likely to generate a serious Washington dialogue about what to do, if anything this election year, about entrenched fiscal problems that have deficits surging despite a healthy economy. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that “once again the president is showing just how little he values the good health, financial security and well-being of hard-working American families.”

BERLIN (AP) — A strong winter storm that has battered Europe with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains has killed at least five people and caused severe travel disruptions on Monday. Two men, one in southern England and another in the north of Slovenia, died after their cars were hit by falling trees. In Sweden, one man drowned after the boat he was sailing capsized. Another person is still missing. And two people, a mother and her daughter, died in Poland after the storm ripped off a roof of a ski rental equipment building and sent it hurtling onto people standing near a ski lift.

BEIJING (AP) — China is reporting a rise in new virus cases, denting optimism that disease control measures which isolated major cities might be working. Japan is reporting dozens of new cases aboard a quarantined cruise ship. The mainland death toll has risen by 97 to 908. The operator of the Diamond Princess cruise ship, quarantined near Tokyo, says health officials found 65 new cases on board in addition to 70 found earlier. Organizers of the Hong Kong Arts Festival, due to start this week, are canceling all of its more than 120 performances.
