(VCSU)  For the sixth consecutive year, Valley City State University has achieved record spring enrollment numbers according to official figures released February 11th.

VCSU has set spring semester records with a headcount enrollment of 1,622 students, nearly a 7% increase over last year’s 1,517 spring headcount.

The spring 2020 undergraduate headcount of 1,491 is also a record, exceeding the 2019 figure of 1,375 by more than 8%.

Other records in the spring 2020 numbers include both the institutional total FTE (full-time equivalent) and the undergraduate FTE. The institutional total FTE figure of 1,091 represents nearly a 7% increase over the 2019 figure of 1,020, and the undergraduate FTE figure of 1,044 represents nearly an 8% increase over the 2019 figure of 970.

Of particular significance in the numbers this spring is the increase in full-time undergraduate students, from 776 in spring semester 2019 to 830 in 2020, just shy of a 7% increase.

VCSU President Alan LaFave says, “It’s gratifying to see the strong spring numbers.  Our hard work in bringing students to Valley City State and working with them to keep them on pathways toward degrees pays off for the students, their families and us. The numbers are an indicator of the quality teaching and learning environment on our campus, which we strive to improve. VCSU continues to provide an outstanding education and great value.”

FARGO, ND (Valley News Live) Fargo police Tuesday honored fallen officer Jason Moszer who died four years ago today in the line of duty.

The 33-year-old officer of Sabin, Minnesota, was set up on a perimeter in North Fargo when he was shot. He died hours later at a hospital.

The honor guard conducted the ceremony in the public entrance parking lot on the west side of the police station building on 25th St. N.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State and industry officials say North Dakota’s oil production may peak within five years as companies finish drilling the most prolific portions of the state’s oil patch. Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms told lawmakers Tuesday that about 20% of drilling activity is now outside of the “core” areas of the state’s oil producing region. The state is producing a near-record average of 1.5 million barrels of oil each day. Helms and North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness estimated production would peak at about 1.8 million barrels daily if prices hold in the next few years.

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Oil production from federally-managed lands and waters topped a record 1 billion barrels last year. That’s up more than 13% from 2018 as the Trump administration eases rules on the industry and technological advances push development into new areas. Critics charge that the gains being made by energy companies come at the expense of the environment, with fewer safeguards to protect the land and wildlife from harm. Oil production royalties collected by the government totaled $7.5 billion in 2019. That’s beneath record revenues in 2013, when crude prices topped $90 a barrel.

NHL-BLUES-BOUWMEESTER COLLAPSES

Blues defenseman collapses on bench; game postponed

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The St. Louis Blues are monitoring the health of one of their veteran players.

Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester (BOH’-mees-tur) had a cardiac episode during a play stoppage in the first period of the Blues’ game against the Ducks in Anaheim.

Bouwmeester appeared to be awake and alert as he was being transported out of the arena to a hospital. St. Louis’ radio announcer Chris Kerber said during an interview with the team’s flagship station that a defibrillator was used.

The 36-year-old appeared to be grabbing a drink of water when he began to slowly fall. Emergency medical personnel rushed to the Blues bench before Bouwmeester was taken off the bench.

Both teams then went back to their locker rooms and the game was postponed a few minutes later tied at 1.

Bouwmeester is in his 17th NHL season and eighth with the Blues. He was a key member of their Stanley Cup-winning team last season.

Oilers’ McDavid out with quad injury

UNDATED (AP) — Edmonton captain Connor McDavid will be out two to three weeks with a quad injury.

The injury was initially said to be a bruised knee from Saturday’s game against the Nashville Predators. McDavid later called it a charley horse/quad injury.

The Oilers captain said the injury was not related to the knee problem sustained in last year’s season finale against Calgary.

Also in the NHL:

— The Avalanche will be without forward Nazem Kadri (NA’-zehm KA’-dree) indefinitely due to a lower-body injury suffered in the second period of Sunday’s game against the Wild. He took the ice for a shift in the third before leaving the game. Colorado coach Jared Bednar said Tuesday that Kadri will be out “weeks, not days.”

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE

Red Sox promote Roenicke to interim manager

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Ron Roenicke (REH’-nih-kee) is the Boston Red Sox’s new field general.

The Red Sox have promoted the bench coach to interim manager on the day pitchers and catchers reported to the team’s spring training camp. Roenicke replaces Alex Cora, who was let go for his role in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal while serving as Houston’s bench coach during the team’s 2017 World Series run.

The interim tag will stay until Major League Baseball completes its investigation into whether the Red Sox engaged in illegal sign-stealing during their 2018 World Series championship season. Roenicke has denied being part of any rules violation and is expected to become permanent manager if the probe clears him.

The Red Sox won the 2018 World Series in their first season under Cota, but the franchise slipped to third place last year with an 84-78 record.

In other MLB news:

— Marwin González has become the first batter from the World Series-winning 2017 Houston Astros to publicly apologize for his role in the sign-stealing scandal. Now with the Minnesota Twins, Gonzalez says he’s remorseful for everything that happened and wishes he could take it back. Major League Baseball’s investigation into the allegation resulted in one-season suspensions for manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow (LOO’-now), who were immediately fired by the Astros.

— A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press that the Mariners have agreed to a minor league contract with three-time All-Star outfielder Carlos González. The 34-year-old Gonzalez played just 45 games last season, hitting a combined .200 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in 145 at-bats for the Indians and Cubs.

— Teams improved to 4-0 in salary arbitration this year when the Rockies defeated catcher Tony Wolters. He will earn $1.9 million rather than his request for $2,475,000. The 27-year-old Wolters hit .262 with one homer and 42 RBIs in 411 plate appearances while making $960,000 last season.

— Dodgers reliever Pedro Báez has asked an arbitration panel for a raise to $4 million for this season, while the ballclub has argued that he should receive $4.5 million. The right-hander made $2.1 last season while going 7-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 71 relief appearances, striking out 69 in 69 2/3 innings while walking 23.

— The Padres have agreed to minor league deals with outfielder Juan Lagares (lah-GAH’-rehs) and infielder Gordon Beckham. That’s according to a person familiar with the agreements.

NFL-PANTHERS-NEWTON

Panthers owner says Cam Newton’s future depends on health

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper remains noncommittal on Cam Newton’s future with the organization, saying it will largely depend on how the quarterback recovers from foot surgery.

Tepper told reporters Tuesday that he’s “not a doctor” and is neither is Newton, who missed 14 games last season with a foot injury. He had surgery on Dec. 11.

The Panthers could save $19 million under next year’s salary cap if they trade or release the 2015 league MVP. Tepper said the Panthers have not had any teams inquire about a trade for Newton.

Newton said in an interview during Super Bowl week that he “absolutely” expects to play in Carolina next season.

COLLEGE ATHLETES-PAY

NCAA’s Emmert presses Senate for ‘guardrails’ on athlete pay

WASHINGTON (AP) — NCAA President Mark Emmert has urged Congress to step in and put restrictions on college athletes’ ability to earn money from endorsements.

Emmert told a Senate committee federal action was needed to “maintain uniform standards in college sports” amid player-friendly laws approved in California and under consideration in other states.

The NCAA has said it will allow players to “benefit” from the use of their name, image and likeness and is working on rules for the payments. Under the NCAA’s timeline, athletes would be able to take advantage of endorsement opportunities beginning next January.

OHIO STATE-FOOTBALL PLAYERS CHARGED

2 Ohio State football players accused of rape, kidnapping

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Two Ohio State University football players are accused of rape and kidnaping.

Columbus police tell The Columbus Dispatch authorities charged defensive players Amir I. Riep and Jahsen L. Wint late Tuesday and warrants have been issued for their arrests. They’re both 21 years old.

In an affidavit filed by police, the woman was hanging out with Riep at an apartment he shares with Wint on Feb. 4 when they began to engage in consensual sex. The woman stopped and told Riep she didn’t want to continue. Wint then entered the room and asked if he could join. Police say after the assault Wint told the woman she needed to say what happened was “consensual on a video recording while laughing at her.”

In world and national news…

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Bernie Sanders has won New Hampshire’s presidential primary election, narrowly edging moderate rival Pete Buttigieg and scoring the first clear victory in the Democratic Party’s chaotic 2020 nomination fight. In his Tuesday night win, the 78-year-old self-described democratic socialist beat back a strong challenge from the 38-year-old former South Bend, Indiana, mayor. Sanders and Buttigieg represent different generations and wings of their party. Sanders declared his victory in New Hampshire “is the beginning of the end” for President Donald Trump. Amy Klobuchar finished a strong third, giving her campaign an unexpected boost. Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden finished way behind. Andrew Yang and Michael Bennet dropped out of the 2020 race.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Concerns are growing that next week’s Nevada caucuses could offer a repeat of the chaos that ensnared the Iowa vote. Nevada is facing many of the same organizational and technical challenges that crippled Iowa’s process. Volunteers who will be leading the Feb. 22 caucuses say key information has yet to be shared. There has been no hands-on training with iPads being deployed to caucus sites on Election Day nor opportunities to try out a new “tool” that will be loaded onto the iPads and used during the caucus process. Nevada Democrats were initially working with the same app developer used in Iowa but scrapped those plans after the company’s app failed there.

BEIJING (AP) — The number of new cases in China has dropped for a second straight day in a virus outbreak that has infected about 45,000 people and killed more than 1,100. While most of the infections have been in China, it has gradually rippled overseas. Thirty-nine new cases were confirmed on a cruise ship quarantined in Japan, bringing the total to 174 on the Diamond Princess. China is struggling to restart its economy after the annual Lunar New Year holiday was extended to try to curb the spread of the virus. Traffic remained light in Beijing and many people were still working at home.

(AP)  The start of the 2020 census is just a month away for most U.S. residents. With that deadline looming, Census Bureau director Steven Dillingham is going to Capitol Hill to update lawmakers about the agency’s readiness. The Census is the largest peacetime operation the federal government undertakes. Lawmakers planned to question Dillingham on Wednesday about whether the bureau is finding enough workers to hire. They also plan to ask about the bureau’s outreach efforts to encourage every person to participate. The House Committee on Oversight and Reform is holding the hearing. Democratic U.S. Rep. Caroline Maloney is the committee’s chairwoman. She says she has concerns about the bureau’s readiness.
